First identify which problem you have: a video that looks blurry after you send it needs a quality-setting fix, while a video that will not download or play needs a connection, storage, permission, format, or app check. For clearer future sends, choose HD; for failed downloads, begin by switching networks and checking that WhatsApp can access the file and device storage.
If a WhatsApp video looks blurry after you send it
WhatsApp offers Standard and HD quality for supported photos and videos in chats. WhatsApp says HD media is clearer, but uses more data and takes longer to send. Your internet connection can still affect the quality of media sent or received, even when HD is selected.
Send an individual video in HD
- Open the WhatsApp chat and select the video you want to send.
- Before sending, tap the HD option, if it appears, and choose HD quality.
- Send the video. The available controls can vary by app version and context.
Make HD the default for chat uploads
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Storage and data > Media upload quality.
- Select HD quality.
Standard is a practical choice when you want to use less data or send more quickly. HD is not available for status updates or profile pictures, and setting HD as the default does not mean every video in every WhatsApp context can be sent in HD. If the video was already sent
You cannot upgrade the quality of a delivered copy in place. Ask the sender to resend the original video using HD, if available. A stronger connection may help with a new send, but HD cannot restore detail that was missing from the original recording.

If a WhatsApp video will not download
WhatsApp identifies a weak internet connection as the most common reason media cannot be downloaded, opened, or sent. Work through these checks in order, retrying the download after each relevant change.
1. Test the connection
- Check that other apps or websites can use the internet.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try downloading again.
- If the connection seems strong but WhatsApp alone cannot transfer media, try another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. A network restriction may be interfering.

2. Restart and update
- Restart the phone, then reopen WhatsApp and retry.
- Install any available WhatsApp update and check for an operating-system update for the phone.

3. Check free device storage
Confirm that the phone has space available. If storage is actually constrained, remove old or unused large files and retry. WhatsApp’s general troubleshooting guidance also suggests clearing the app cache to free device storage. On Android, you can usually find this under Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage > Clear cache; exact labels vary by device. Clear the cache, not app data, unless you understand the consequences and have confirmed your chat backup.

4. Check WhatsApp’s media permission
On Android, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions and allow access to photos and videos, or the relevant media permission shown on your phone. Names and categories vary by Android version and manufacturer. If access is already allowed but the problem continues, WhatsApp’s guidance suggests toggling the permission, restarting the phone, and clearing the app cache.
5. Check the video format
WhatsApp lists these supported video formats: 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV, and MP4. If WhatsApp says a format is unsupported, update the app and try again. A file extension alone does not guarantee that a video is intact or playable, so a supported format will not resolve every playback issue. See Can’t download or send media files.

6. Check an Android SD card, if one is used
If WhatsApp media is stored on a removable SD card, check that the card has free space and is not read-only. If media remains unavailable and the card is confirmed faulty or corrupted, it may need to be reformatted or replaced. Check that the card is compatible with the phone before replacing it; this is a card-specific fix, not a general solution for WhatsApp download problems.

If a video downloads but will not play
Separate a transfer problem from a playback problem: if the video never finishes downloading, focus first on the connection, storage, permissions, and (if applicable) SD card checks above. If it downloads but will not open or play, update WhatsApp and the phone, then confirm that the file is in a supported format. A supported-format list does not establish that a particular file is undamaged or encoded in a way your device can play, so try obtaining a fresh copy from the sender if the file still fails.

If WhatsApp does not download videos automatically
Automatic downloading is controlled by WhatsApp’s media auto-download settings. Check the setting for the network you are using—Wi-Fi or mobile data—and whether videos are included. If you want to conserve data or storage, you may prefer to download videos manually. Auto-download settings are separate from playback: changing them can affect whether a video downloads automatically, but will not repair a file that has already downloaded and cannot play.
On WhatsApp Web, if media transfer is the issue, refresh the page, clear the browser cache and cookies, or log out and back in, then retry. These browser steps apply to WhatsApp Web rather than the phone app.
