Whales do not generally choose to beach themselves. A stranding is an outcome that can involve illness, injury, environmental conditions, human activity, or several factors at once—and investigators often cannot identify one definitive cause. Some whales found ashore died at sea and were washed in by currents.
What counts as a whale stranding?
NOAA Fisheries uses “stranded” for a cetacean—a whale, dolphin, or porpoise—that is dead on a beach or floating in the water, or alive on a beach and unable to return to the water. “Beachcast” can describe an animal that died at sea and later washed ashore. So finding a whale on a beach does not establish that it swam there alive.
The International Whaling Commission (IWC) groups possible contributors into natural factors, such as age and disease, and human-related factors, including bycatch in fishing gear and vessel collisions. Those categories can overlap: for example, a whale weakened by disease may also be less able to avoid a hazard.
What can cause an individual whale to strand?
Investigators consider a range of possible causes rather than applying one explanation to every case. NOAA Fisheries lists the following among documented general cause categories; they are not a ranking of how often each occurs worldwide.

The categories are drawn from NOAA Fisheries guidance and its 2017 National Report of Marine Mammal Strandings in the United States. That report covers U.S. strandings during calendar year 2017 and was published in 2021; it should not be read as current global prevalence data.
Why do whales strand in groups?
Mass strandings pose a different attribution problem from a single animal ashore. Social bonds and group cohesion may help explain why companions follow an animal into shallow water or remain together after one animal grounds. NOAA’s Marine Mammals Ashore: A Field Guide for Strandings also discusses possible initiating circumstances such as illness, weather, assistance behavior, or panic. Social following is a plausible contributing process, not a complete explanation for every group event.

How often mass strandings are reported varies by species and place. NOAA Fisheries says they are reported most often in pilot whales, common dolphins, false killer whales, and melon-headed whales, depending on geography. That is not a universal ranking of species or a measure of the global stranding rate.

A stranding occurring near a sound source does not, by itself, prove that the sound caused it. The cited NOAA and IWC guidance identifies several possible natural and human-related contributors, but does not establish sonar as a general explanation for whale strandings. Attributing a particular event to sonar or another sound source requires evidence specific to that event; timing alone is not enough.

How do scientists work out what happened?
Response teams assess live animals and gather information and samples. For dead animals, a necropsy can help investigators look for disease, toxins or other contaminant exposure, injury, and clues about diet or population health. They may also consider the animal’s condition, the location and circumstances, and relevant environmental information.
These findings can identify a contributing factor without proving that it was the sole cause. NOAA Fisheries states that “in many instances, a specific cause cannot be determined.” Its 2017 U.S. report likewise documents a range of causes and contributing factors rather than a single explanation that applies to all strandings.

One regional tally illustrates why numbers need context: NOAA Fisheries’ page, updated July 2, 2026, reports 48 large whales stranded alive in the NOAA West Coast region between 2006 and 2025. Of those, 35 died onshore, five were humanely euthanized after health assessments, and eight returned to sea. These are outcomes for live large whales in that region and period—not a global stranding rate. NOAA also says the U.S. National Marine Mammal Stranding Network includes more than 100 partner organizations; that figure describes the network, not the number of whale strandings.

What should you do if you find a stranded whale?
- Keep your distance. A large whale can be dangerous to approach, and an animal that appears still may be injured or distressed.
- Keep other people and pets away. Do not crowd, touch, feed, or try to move the animal.
- Contact local responders. Call the local marine-mammal stranding network or wildlife authority and give them the animal’s location and condition.
- Do not attempt to refloat it. The IWC warns that a stranded animal may have unseen internal injuries and that attempted refloating can result in a traumatic restranding. Leave assessment and any response to trained responders.
