WebP can reduce image file sizes, but the savings depend on the image, compression mode, encoder, and visual quality target. A browser does not convert an image to WebP on its own: the page’s HTML or the server chooses which available representation to deliver, using browser capabilities as a guide.

Why are WebP images smaller?

WebP uses different coding methods for its lossy and lossless modes. In lossy WebP, predictive coding based on VP8 uses neighboring pixel blocks to predict image data and stores the differences. Lossless WebP can reuse previously seen image fragments to reconstruct pixels. The method and the chosen compression settings affect the final file size.

Published comparisons give a useful sense of potential savings, not a guarantee for every image. Google’s 2023 documentation reports lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent SSIM quality, and lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNG. MDN reports lossy WebP as 25–35% smaller than JPEG at visually similar compression levels and lossless WebP about 26% smaller than the same images in PNG; the retrieved MDN page does not state a publication year. Google’s compression documentation and MDN’s image format guide describe these comparison figures.

Actual results vary with image content, compression mode, quality target, and encoder. A photo, a transparent icon, and a graphic with small text may respond very differently to the same setting.

Is WebP lossy or lossless?

It can be either. WebP supports lossy and lossless image compression, transparency (alpha), and animation. Its RIFF-based container can also carry metadata and embedded ICC color profiles. These capabilities make WebP suitable for several kinds of web imagery, but they do not make it the right choice for every asset.

Choose and evaluate a format based on the rendered result and file size for the specific image. Confirm that transparency, animation, color, and metadata requirements are preserved when those properties matter. RFC 9649 describes the WebP image format, while Google’s format documentation explains its compression techniques and supported features.

How should you check WebP image quality?

There is no single compression setting that works for every image. Compare candidate encodings at the intended display size and judge both visual quality and bytes saved. web.dev recommends testing compression levels against the quality an image needs rather than relying on a universal setting. Its image performance guide also warns that lossy compression can be less effective around sharp edges and may create visible artifacts in high-contrast colored text on flat backgrounds.

  • Inspect text, line art, thin edges, and flat areas closely for smearing, ringing, or other visible artifacts.
  • Check photos and graphics at the size and scale at which visitors will see them.
  • Verify that color and transparency remain acceptable, and that animation or metadata is retained if the asset depends on it.

How does a browser decide whether to use WebP?

The site offers the image representations; the browser selects from those it can use, or the server selects a representation based on the request. Two common approaches are HTML alternatives and HTTP content negotiation.

Offer formats in HTML

A page can use the <picture> element with one or more <source> elements to offer alternative formats, followed by a fallback image. The browser chooses among the sources it supports. Responsive image workflows can also offer different sizes as well as formats; web.dev’s image performance guide discusses these options.

Negotiate the representation with the server

Browsers send an HTTP Accept request header listing the media types they can accept. A server can check whether image/webp is included and return WebP when appropriate. The response’s Content-Type identifies the format actually sent. See MDN’s Accept header reference and Google’s WebP FAQ.

  • Compress Photos Without Quality Loss – Reduce image size in seconds while keeping excellent visual quality. Perfect for saving storage or preparing images for upload.
  • Convert Between JPG, PNG & WEBP – Easily switch formats for better compatibility, faster sharing, and optimized storage.
  • Create PDF from Images – Combine one or multiple photos into a clean, professional-looking PDF with just one tap.
  • Batch Processing & Fast Performance – Compress or convert multiple images at once. Save time with smooth, quick processing.
  • Offline, No Watermark & Easy Sharing – Works completely offline, adds no watermark, and lets you share directly via WhatsApp, Gmail, Drive, or any social app.

If one URL can return different formats depending on Accept, the response should include Vary: Accept. This tells shared caches that the response depends on that request header, helping prevent a cached WebP response from being served to a client that requested a different representation. web.dev’s image performance guidance calls out this cache requirement.

Do you need a WebP fallback?

Provide a JPEG or PNG alternative when your audience may include clients that do not support WebP. Current major browsers broadly support WebP, but historical compatibility was less complete. Google’s FAQ lists browser-version thresholds for compatibility; those are historical minimums, not a live measure of browser usage. MDN recommends a JPEG or PNG fallback for clients without WebP support.

With HTML alternatives, put the fallback in the <img> element inside <picture>. With server-side negotiation, configure the server to return an appropriate supported format when WebP is not acceptable. In either case, ensure that the fallback is a real, usable image rather than assuming every client can decode WebP.
