Walking may help some adults with constipation, but it is not a guaranteed fix. NHS adult guidance says that a daily walk or run can help you poo more regularly. Clinical guidelines are more cautious: studies are inconsistent, and the certainty of evidence is low.
A sensible approach is to add comfortable, low-intensity walking to a broader routine that includes fluids, gradually increased fibre and good toilet habits. A practical guideline reference is 30–60 minutes of low-intensity activity at least three times a week, as tolerated, but that is a low-certainty recommendation—not a proven dose that works for everyone.
What walking can—and cannot—do for constipation
Constipation commonly means passing stools less often than usual, passing hard or difficult stools, or feeling that you have not emptied your bowel. For some adults, regular movement appears to support more regular bowel symptoms. Walking is an accessible way to test that possibility because it is low impact, can be split into shorter sessions and does not require special equipment.
The NHS states: “A daily walk or run can help you poo more regularly.” That is practical self-care guidance, not a promise that walking will relieve every episode. The 2022 Seoul Consensus on Clinical Practice Guidelines for Functional Constipation says exercise may improve symptoms in some people with chronic constipation, but gives the recommendation conditionally and rates the evidence as low. Its review found inconsistent results across studies, which used different exercise programs, participants and outcome measures.

In other words, walking is reasonable to try, especially alongside other measures, but there is no established walking schedule that reliably treats constipation on its own. No numerical effect size for walking was established in the guidance considered here.
How much walking should you do?
Two commonly cited guidance formulations are useful starting points. They describe options rather than competing prescriptions.
| Guidance | Activity suggestion | Scope and certainty |
|---|---|---|
| NHS adult constipation guidance | A daily walk or run may help you poo more regularly. | Simple general self-care advice; it does not specify a guaranteed duration or intensity. |
| Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), fourth edition, 2025 | Low-intensity physical activity for about 30–60 minutes, as tolerated, at least three times a week, as part of a wider multicomponent program. | Guideline recommendation for people living with constipation; certainty of effects is low. |
| 2022 Seoul Consensus | Exercise may be recommended because it may improve symptoms in some people with chronic constipation. | Conditional recommendation with low-level evidence; no single dose is established. |
The RNAO range is a usable reference, not a requirement to reach immediately. “Low intensity” means light, non-strenuous repetitive movement. The guideline examples include walking, low-impact aerobic activity, light resistance training and leisure-level sports. The studies it considered also used measures such as fibre, fluids and toileting changes, so any improvement could not be assigned to walking alone.

A practical way to try walking
The following plan turns the guidance into an experiment you can adjust. It is a tolerability-based approach, not a proven treatment dose.
- Check your starting point. Note how often you are passing stools, whether they are hard or difficult, and whether you have pain, bloating or straining. If you have warning signs listed below, seek medical advice instead of beginning a self-directed exercise trial.
- Begin at an easy level. If you are inactive, start with a short, comfortable walk that leaves you able to speak in full sentences. A few minutes around your home or workplace is a valid first session. The goal is consistency, not exhaustion.
- Build time gradually. Add a little time or an extra outing only when the current amount feels comfortable. You can divide a longer target into two or more walks. Progress toward the RNAO reference of roughly 30–60 minutes on at least three days each week if that fits your health, schedule and energy.
- Use effort, not speed, as the guide. Low-intensity walking should feel light and sustainable. Slow down, shorten the route or rest if you become unusually breathless, dizzy, faint or unwell. Walking faster is not shown to produce better constipation outcomes.
- Make it a routine. A walk after a meal, at a regular time or attached to another daily habit may be easier to remember. The NHS wording is a daily walk or run; if daily activity is unrealistic, the RNAO schedule offers another reasonable pattern.
- Observe trends rather than one bowel movement. Keep a simple note of walking time, stool ease and frequency for a week or two. Constipation can vary naturally, so one unchanged day does not prove that walking is ineffective.
- Adjust or stop when necessary. Reduce the duration during illness, pain or a flare of another condition. Choose a safe, level route, carry water in hot weather and ask a clinician how to modify activity if you have a condition that limits exercise.
Why movement might help
Physical activity may influence bowel symptoms through several overlapping pathways: movement can support normal gut motility, establish a predictable daily rhythm and reduce long periods of sitting. A walk can also create a regular opportunity to respond to the urge to use the toilet rather than postponing it. These are plausible reasons to try walking, not proof that a particular number of steps or minutes will work.
The research summarized by the Seoul Consensus does not show a consistent response across all adults. Differences in exercise type, duration, participant health and accompanying diet or toileting measures make it impossible to promise that walking alone will resolve constipation.

Pair walking with the other self-care measures
NHS advice treats activity as one part of a package. Add the measures that fit your situation:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Increase fibre gradually. Add fibre-containing foods in stages rather than making an abrupt change, which can worsen gas or discomfort for some people. If you have been advised to restrict fibre for a medical reason, follow that advice instead.
- Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Adequate fluid intake supports the overall bowel routine. Your needs vary with climate, activity, health conditions and medicines; a clinician can advise if you have a fluid restriction.
- Respond to the urge. Repeatedly delaying a bowel movement can make a regular routine harder to establish. Give yourself enough time rather than rushing.
- Use a supportive toilet position. A low toilet footstool can raise your knees above your hips while you are seated. This may make the position more comfortable for passing stool; it is an optional aid, not a treatment proven to work by itself.
- Ask a pharmacist if lifestyle changes are not helping. NHS guidance says a pharmacist can advise on a suitable laxative. A laxative is not a reason to abandon movement, and the right choice depends on your symptoms, other medicines and health history.
Change one or two habits at a time so you can tell what you tolerate. A sudden large increase in fibre, fluids or exercise is not necessary.
What to do if walking does not improve things
Give a comfortable routine a fair trial, then reassess rather than continually increasing the distance. If stools remain hard, bowel movements remain difficult or symptoms keep returning, discuss the problem with a pharmacist or GP. You may need a review of diet, medicines, pelvic-floor function or another cause of constipation.

Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you suspect it is causing constipation. Speak with the prescribing clinician first; they can decide whether the dose or treatment should change safely.
Walking is also not a substitute for treatment of an underlying condition. The Seoul Consensus evidence is about possible symptom improvement in some people, not prevention of every cause of constipation.

- regular bloating;
- blood in the stool;
- unexplained weight loss;
- persistent tiredness;
- a sudden change in your usual bowel habits; or
- tummy or abdominal pain.
These features do not identify a single diagnosis, but they mean self-care alone should not be your only plan. A clinician can assess the pattern, examine contributing medicines and decide whether tests or a different treatment are needed.
Pregnancy, after birth and other situations needing individual advice
Constipation is common during pregnancy and after birth. NHS information says its simple measures can be safe to try during pregnancy, but your midwife, GP or pharmacist should advise on activity, fluids, fibre and any laxative in the context of your pregnancy and other conditions.
This article is about adult self-care. Adult walking guidance should not be applied automatically to babies or children; NHS provides separate information for those age groups. Older adults and people with heart, lung, joint, neurological or balance problems may also need an individualized activity plan.
How to interpret the evidence without overpromising
“Low certainty” does not mean exercise is useless. It means the available studies are not consistent or robust enough to predict a dependable benefit for every person. The RNAO recommendation is based on an expert panel’s judgment within a multicomponent program, and the studies included additional interventions. The Seoul Consensus likewise makes a conditional recommendation rather than claiming a universal effect.
That combination supports a measured decision: choose a tolerable walk because it may help bowel regularity and has broader health benefits, while continuing the other self-care steps and seeking advice when symptoms persist or warning signs appear. There is no evidence in these guidelines that a special shoe, exact step count or strenuous workout is required.
