If a voice app removes text you did not mean to retract, the phrase you spoke may have been treated as an editing command—or an undo may have affected a different passage than you expected. Without knowing the app and the exact sequence, it is not possible to identify a specific cause. First, undo the deletion if you can; then record what the app heard and what text was selected.
How dictation can turn a correction into a deletion
Speech-to-text and voice editing are related but distinct behaviors. A dictation system converts speech into text, while a command-and-control system recognizes a defined phrase as an instruction. Apple describes this distinction in its NSSpeechRecognizer documentation: command phrases must be defined in advance, unlike unconstrained dictation. That technical distinction does not establish how an unidentified app works, but it explains why a phrase intended as text might instead trigger an action—or why a command might appear in the text.
Products also differ in what a correction affects. Microsoft Voice typing documents “Delete that” as deleting the last spoken word or phrase, and “Revert” or “Undo that” as restoring an original version after a correction. QUILL Lite says “scratch that” and “delete that” remove the last dictated phrase, while “undo” performs the same action as Ctrl+Z. ParusVoice documents voice editing that can select existing text, replace or delete it, and invoke undo. These are product-specific examples, not universal command meanings.
What to do immediately after text disappears
- Stop dictating. Further speech or editing may change the text range affected by the next undo.
- Use the app’s undo once. If the result is not what you expected, stop rather than repeatedly undoing; successive undo actions may continue changing the document.
- Check the selection and cursor. Note whether text was highlighted, where the insertion point was, and whether the missing sentence was the last phrase dictated or older text.
- Save or copy the document if it is stable. Preserve the current state before trying more commands, especially if the app has a document history or autosaved versions.
- Capture the sequence. Write down the exact words spoken, the app’s displayed transcription, when the deletion happened, and what changed after undo.
How to tell what kind of failure occurred
The correction phrase appeared as text
The app may have handled the phrase as ordinary dictation rather than as an editing command. QUILL Lite, for example, says its command must be spoken alone after a pause; within a longer sentence, command-like words are written as words. This is a QUILL Lite rule, not a general requirement for voice apps.

The wrong phrase disappeared as soon as you spoke
The app may have recognized a command whose scope includes a recent dictated phrase. Check the app’s own command list and wording: Microsoft Voice typing and QUILL Lite document deletion of the last spoken or dictated phrase, but their behavior cannot be assumed for other products.
Text disappeared only after you invoked undo
Undo may have reversed a prior edit or acted on a different range than you expected. Record whether the text was selected and what edit immediately preceded the undo. QUILL’s dictation guide says Ctrl+Z takes back one phrase per press; that scope is specific to QUILL.

Existing text was selected or edited by voice
Some tools support voice editing of text already in a document, not just correction of newly dictated words. If a selection was active, include it in your notes because it may explain why an edit affected older text. - The app’s exact name and version, plus the device and operating-system version.
- The exact spoken correction phrase and any words spoken immediately before or after it.
- The text that disappeared, whether it had just been dictated, and whether it was selected.
- Whether deletion happened during recognition, after a pause, or only after a separate undo command.
- What the app displayed as recognized text, and what happened when you used undo once.
These details help distinguish misrecognition, command recognition, and an undo affecting an unexpected range. The available documentation does not identify the app in this report or verify that a particular bug occurred, so no single cause can be assigned from the symptom alone.

Check the app’s documented command rules
Look for the app’s official help page for dictation, voice commands, correction, and undo. Confirm the exact trigger phrase, whether it must be spoken on its own, whether a pause is required, and what range it affects. Avoid testing deletion commands in an important document; use a blank document or a copy so a mistaken command cannot remove valuable text.
For reference, Microsoft’s Windows Voice typing guide documents its own command phrases and notes that Voice typing uses online speech recognition powered by Azure Speech services. QUILL’s dictation guide describes Escape as discarding a phrase while the app indicates it is hearing the user. These instructions apply only to those tools; use the documentation for the app that actually deleted the text.
