“Recognize my voice” can mean two different things: identifying who is speaking or converting speech into the right words. Those failures need different fixes. If the assistant never wakes, check the microphone and wake-word settings. If it wakes but writes or hears the wrong words, check language support and use correction tools. If it understands the words but opens the wrong account or gives someone else’s personal results, configure speaker identification such as Google Voice Match. The sequence below separates these problems so you change the setting that can actually help.

Start by identifying what failed

Voice interaction is easier to troubleshoot when you describe the symptom precisely. A wake-word detector, a speech-to-text system and a personal-results system perform different jobs. Treating all three as “voice recognition” often leads to retraining the wrong feature.

What you observe Most likely class of problem First action
The assistant does not react to the wake phrase The microphone is muted, disabled or the wake-word listener is not operating Check the microphone control and the device maker’s wake-word troubleshooting. On a Google speaker, a solid orange light ring means the microphone is turned off.
The assistant wakes but transcribes the wrong words or a name Speech-to-text, language selection or correction issue Verify the language on that device, then correct the text with the platform’s available editing or dictation controls.
The words are right, but personal results use the wrong person’s account Speaker identification or account-association issue Check Voice Match or the equivalent household voice-recognition setting rather than retraining dictation.

Google’s speaker troubleshooting guidance covers a muted microphone separately from its Voice Match documentation. That separation is important: a voice model cannot help if the device never receives audio, and a transcription correction cannot decide which account should receive a request.

What “recognize my voice” actually means

Speaker identification

Speaker identification answers, “Which enrolled person is talking?” Google Voice Match uses a voice model to determine whether a speaker should receive personal results. It is designed for account association, not as a universal way to make every dictated sentence more accurate. Google says Voice Match is available on supported Assistant-enabled devices, can be retrained in Google Home settings, and supports up to six people in one home; that limit is a configuration allowance, not an accuracy measurement. Language availability depends on the device.

Speech transcription

Transcription answers, “What words did the speaker say?” Google describes a separate personalized speech-recognition feature as helping Assistant learn a person’s speaking style, words and phrases. Its support page says the feature uses saved interactions, corrections, audio and recognized text on the device over time. It is documented only for Assistant on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, and Google explicitly says the setting does not control other data or personalization settings. Voice Match retraining therefore should not be presented as a general fix for misspelled names or dictated words.

Intent and account routing

Even a correct transcript can produce an unwanted result if the request is routed through the wrong account, household profile or device. Diagnose the transcript first: read what the assistant displayed or repeated. If the words are correct, move to speaker identification and account settings instead of changing language or dictation.

Fixes to try, in the order that avoids wasted changes

1. Confirm that the microphone is available

  1. Look for a hardware mute switch, a microphone icon or an on-screen privacy indicator.
  2. On a Google speaker, turn the microphone back on if the light ring is solid orange; Google identifies that signal as microphone-off status.
  3. Speak only after the device indicates that it is listening. If there is still no response, follow the device maker’s wake-word troubleshooting rather than changing transcription settings.

This step distinguishes “no audio reached the assistant” from “audio was heard but decoded incorrectly.”

2. Align the language with the way you speak

Check the assistant language on the device where the error occurs, not only the language on your phone or account. A language can be available on one model and absent on another. Google’s advanced voice typing has its own device, operating-system and language requirements, so Android-wide assumptions are unsafe. Apple recommends setting Siri and HomePod to the same language for household voice recognition. After changing a language, test a short phrase containing the name or word that previously failed.

3. Retrain speaker identification only when identity is wrong

If the assistant consistently gives personal results to the wrong household member, open Google Home’s Assistant settings, choose Voice Match and follow the retraining prompts shown for that device. Complete enrollment in the same room and with the same microphone arrangement you normally use. Retraining changes the voice model used to associate a speaker with an account; it does not turn a standard keyboard or dictation engine into a different transcription model.

4. Correct the actual word when the transcript is wrong

On supported Pixel phones, Google’s advanced voice typing provides several correction paths: speak a correction, type it, spell it aloud or choose a suggested alternative. Use the method that preserves the intended spelling for names, technical terms and unusual words. Google says this feature is for Pixel 6 or later with listed system and language requirements; check compatibility before assuming another Android phone has the same controls.

5. Use personalization where the device supports it

On Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, Google’s personalized speech recognition can learn from saved interactions, corrections, audio and recognized text stored on the device. Enable it only if that learning behavior fits your privacy preference and if your model and language are eligible. Google describes the feature as improving recognition of a unique speaking style, words and phrases, but does not promise a particular improvement for every speaker or environment.

6. Choose whether to share samples for service improvement

Apple’s optional “Improve Siri & Dictation” setting is a separate decision from local correction and speaker identification. Apple says opting in allows it to store and review samples of interactions, including audio, transcripts and related request data, to improve Siri, Dictation, Translate and related features. Apple also describes a random device-generated identifier and says request history is not used to build a marketing profile or sold. The setting is optional; use the device’s Settings search for “Improve Siri & Dictation” to review or change it. Apple’s support page describing these terms was published June 2, 2026.

7. Check accessibility options for atypical speech

If your speech pattern is atypical, look for a platform feature designed for that situation rather than repeatedly enrolling the same standard voice model. Apple’s current iPhone accessibility documentation describes an atypical-speech listening option for Siri with English (U.S.) as the primary language condition. The documented language condition matters: do not assume the option is available for every Siri language. Apple Voice Control also offers dictation and spelling modes in supported configurations, which can provide an alternative when conversational commands are unreliable.

Google features: which one changes what

Voice Match for personal results

Use Voice Match when the assistant hears the sentence correctly but cannot determine who should receive personal results. In Google Home, open Assistant settings, select Voice Match and enroll or retrain the people who use that device. Google’s documentation says the service uses a voice model, works only on supported Assistant-enabled devices and has device-dependent language availability. Because it is an identity feature, a successful retraining session should be judged by whether the correct account receives a personal request, not by whether every dictated word is spelled correctly.

Personalized speech recognition on Pixel 7 series

Google documents personalized speech recognition only for Assistant on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. It learns over time from on-device interactions, including corrections and recognized text, to adapt to words and phrases that are unusual for a general model. This setting is independent of other account and personalization controls. If the option is absent, the phone or language may not meet Google’s documented eligibility; do not infer that Voice Match retraining is an equivalent feature.

Advanced voice typing on Pixel 6 or later

Advanced voice typing is a transcription and editing feature, not a household identity system. Google lists Pixel 6 or later as the device family and publishes specific operating-system and language requirements. It supports language detection and lets you correct a misheard word by speaking, typing, spelling or selecting a suggestion. Google says text remains on the device except when you use specified edit features. Check the current support page before relying on these behaviors on another Android model or an unsupported language.

Apple features: Siri, HomePod and Voice Control

HomePod Voice Recognition

Apple’s HomePod guidance uses voice recognition to provide personalized media and other experiences for multiple people in a household. Apple recommends setting Siri and HomePod to the same language. If one device is configured in a different language, fix that alignment before judging whether the household voice model is working. The feature is about recognizing household members; it is not a promise that Siri will transcribe every name correctly.

Improve Siri & Dictation

Apple characterizes this as an opt-in improvement program. According to Apple, samples may include audio, transcripts and data associated with a request, and Apple may store and review those samples. A random identifier generated by the device is used in the process described on Apple’s support page; Apple says request history is not used to create a marketing profile or sold. Turning the option on is a privacy trade-off, not a guaranteed accuracy switch, so decide based on whether contributing samples is acceptable to you.

Atypical-speech listening

On supported iPhone configurations, Siri’s accessibility settings include an option intended to improve listening for atypical speech. Apple documents English (U.S.) as the primary language condition in the current guide. If your Siri language differs, the control may not appear or may behave differently; check the language requirement first.

Voice Control as a command alternative

Apple Voice Control includes dictation and spelling modes in supported configurations. These modes are useful when you need to enter a specific spelling or control the device without relying on a conversational Siri request. Availability depends on the device, operating system and language, so confirm that your configuration supports the mode you want.

Practical troubleshooting scenarios

“It never hears me.”

  • Check the physical or software microphone mute state.
  • For a Google speaker, restore the microphone if the ring is solid orange.
  • Test the wake phrase from the normal speaking position. If wake-up still fails, use wake-word troubleshooting for that model; do not start with Voice Match.

“It hears me but writes the wrong name.”

  • Confirm the device’s language and whether the language is supported on that model.
  • On eligible Pixel phones, use advanced voice typing’s correction options: speak, type, spell or select a suggestion.
  • On Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro, consider personalized speech recognition if its documented eligibility and data behavior suit you.
  • Do not expect household Voice Match retraining to repair spelling errors.

“The transcript is right, but it uses my partner’s account.”

  • Check Voice Match enrollment for each person on the device.
  • Retrain the identity model in Google Home when the retraining control is available.
  • On HomePod, verify that Siri and HomePod use the same language and that household voice recognition is configured for the intended members.

“My accent or speech pattern is repeatedly misunderstood.”

  • Verify that the selected language matches the language you are speaking.
  • Use any platform-specific correction or personalization feature that your device and language support.
  • On iPhone, check the atypical-speech Siri option; Apple’s current documentation ties it to English (U.S.).
  • Try Voice Control’s dictation or spelling modes when you need exact text and your configuration supports them.

What the official guidance does—and does not—prove

Google and Apple document settings, eligibility and data practices, but the cited pages do not establish a universal error rate or prove that one assistant is more accurate than another across accents, rooms, microphones or languages. They also do not show that buying a replacement speaker, external microphone or repair accessory will improve recognition. Treat a change as successful only when it fixes your specific symptom: the device wakes, the transcript contains the intended words, or the correct account receives the result.

Settings and language coverage can change as products are updated. Recheck the platform’s current support page when a control is missing, a device is upgraded or a language is added. The most reliable method remains symptom-first troubleshooting: microphone for no wake-up, language and correction for wrong words, and speaker identification for wrong personal results.
