Vibration control matters in an IVF laboratory because microscopes and micromanipulators must remain steady while embryologists handle eggs, sperm and embryos. Air-conditioning equipment, people walking nearby, building movement, road traffic and construction can all introduce motion into a workstation. Reducing that motion can make microscope-based work, including intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), more controlled and repeatable. It does not, by itself, prove higher fertilization, implantation or live-birth rates.

Why a stable workstation matters in IVF

Many IVF procedures are performed while an embryologist watches a magnified field and moves extremely fine tools. In ICSI, a single sperm is selected and injected into an egg through a micropipette. Any movement of the microscope image, dish or micromanipulator can make positioning more difficult and may interrupt a carefully timed procedure.

Kinetic Systems, a vibration-control manufacturer, describes environmental vibration as an operational concern for IVF microscopy and micromanipulation. Its guidance, published April 1, 2025, identifies several possible sources:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment
  • People walking or working near the laboratory
  • Movement transmitted through the building structure
  • Road traffic and nearby vehicles
  • Construction and other external activity

The guidance does not rank these sources by frequency or severity. Their effect depends on the building, room layout, equipment and time of day, so an IVF laboratory should measure or investigate its own environment rather than assume that one source is responsible.

What vibration can affect—and what is not established

Operational effects

Vibration can make a microscope field appear unsteady, complicate fine tool movements and increase the difficulty of maintaining precise alignment. Those are workflow and ergonomics concerns: they relate to how reliably staff can perform a task, not to a demonstrated change in patient outcomes.

Clinical outcomes

The available manufacturer guidance is not an independent clinical study, professional guideline or validated exposure standard. It provides no clinical vibration threshold and no comparative evidence showing that a particular table or workstation improves fertilization, embryo viability, implantation or live birth. A laboratory should therefore present isolation equipment as a means of controlling the working environment, not as a treatment that increases IVF success.

When an anti-vibration table is appropriate

An anti-vibration table or isolation workstation is most relevant when a microscope or micromanipulator is sensitive to movement and the room has a measurable or recurring vibration problem. Before purchasing, the laboratory should identify the instrument, the work it supports and the disturbances that reach the bench.

Questions for an IVF lab vibration assessment

  • Does the image move when HVAC systems start, doors close or people walk past?
  • Is the disturbance continuous, intermittent or limited to particular hours?
  • Does it occur at the microscope, the micromanipulator, the work surface or all three?
  • Can the source be reduced through room layout, equipment relocation or building maintenance?
  • Does the proposed isolation system fit the microscope, accessories and any incubator or other equipment placed on it?

Source control can be preferable to isolation alone. For example, moving a bench away from a mechanical plant or separating heavy foot traffic may address the cause. Isolation equipment is useful when movement remains after those practical changes.

How to select an IVF vibration-isolation workstation

Manufacturers commonly describe isolation by direction and performance. Kinetic Systems’ VIBRAPLANE 9100 Series is presented as an IVF laboratory workstation with vertical and horizontal isolation and a stated maximum supported load. Those are product descriptions, not independent test results; obtain the current specifications directly from the manufacturer before ordering.

Selection factor What the laboratory should verify
Instrument and workflow Compatibility with the microscope, micromanipulator, stage, monitor and accessories used for the intended procedure.
Isolation performance Whether the system addresses the directions and frequency range of the vibration observed in the room; a generic “anti-vibration” label is not a substitute for this match.
Load capacity The total weight of every item placed on the workstation, compared with the manufacturer’s rated maximum.
Footprint and access Available floor and bench space, clearance for operators, cable routing, doors and service access.
Cleanability Sealed, accessible surfaces and materials compatible with the laboratory’s cleaning and disinfection procedures.
Installation constraints Floor condition, utilities, leveling requirements, delivery route and any need for vendor installation or recalibration.
Evidence What is independently tested, what is only a manufacturer specification and whether the claimed performance applies to the installed configuration.

Commissioning and maintaining the setup

  1. Document the problem. Record when vibration occurs, which instrument is affected and what nearby equipment or activity coincides with it.
  2. Check the room first. Inspect HVAC operation, doors, pumps, foot traffic, construction and structural transmission before selecting a table.
  3. Confirm the complete load. Add the microscope, micromanipulator, stage, monitor, accessories and any fixtures; compare the total with the workstation’s current rating.
  4. Plan cleaning and servicing. Ensure operators can disinfect all working surfaces and that service staff can reach adjustment points without moving the instrument unnecessarily.
  5. Verify performance after installation. Repeat the same observations or measurements used during the assessment, including HVAC start-up and normal staff movement.
  6. Monitor changes. Building work, new mechanical equipment or a relocated bench can alter the vibration environment, so reassess after major changes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating every vibration problem as a product problem: relocating a bench or fixing a mechanical source may be more effective than adding isolation.
  • Buying by load rating alone: capacity does not establish that the system will isolate the frequencies present in a particular room.
  • Ignoring horizontal motion: microscope and micromanipulation disturbances are not necessarily limited to vertical movement.
  • Overlooking cleaning: a difficult-to-disinfect surface can create a laboratory-operational problem even if its isolation performance is suitable.
  • Using marketing claims as clinical evidence: a stable work surface is an engineering control; it is not proof of improved embryo or patient outcomes.

What the evidence supports today

The strongest defensible conclusion is practical: stable microscopy and micromanipulation are important to IVF laboratory work, and environmental vibration is a plausible source of disruption. The available source does not establish a universal exposure limit, identify a frequency that harms embryos, or show that one isolation workstation produces better clinical results than another. Laboratories deciding whether to install an anti-vibration table should base the decision on an assessment of their room, instrument requirements, load, footprint, cleaning process and independently verifiable performance—not on an assumed success-rate benefit.
