Verizon internet can feel slow because of a weak or obstructed cellular signal, temporary network congestion, a service issue, or weak Wi-Fi inside the home. First identify whether the slow connection is Verizon mobile data or a device on home Wi-Fi; the right fix depends on where the slowdown occurs.

First, identify which Verizon connection is slow

“Verizon internet” can mean mobile data on a phone, Verizon 5G or LTE Home Internet, Fios, or Wi-Fi from a Verizon router. A phone that is slow on cellular data points to different possible causes than a laptop that is slow only on home Wi-Fi. Verizon’s support guidance describes possible causes, but cannot identify the cause for a specific account or address.

  • Slow on cellular data: Check signal, congestion, plan-related data controls, and network events.
  • Slow on home Wi-Fi: Check whether the issue affects one device or several, and whether it changes with distance from the router.
  • Slow on wireless home internet: Consider both the gateway’s connection to Verizon’s network and the Wi-Fi connection between the gateway and your devices.

Why Verizon mobile data may be slow

Weak or obstructed signal

Distance from a cell site, terrain, building materials, construction, foliage, and electronic interference can weaken or block a mobile signal. Signal can vary between locations, including inside and outside the same building. Verizon lists these as possible factors, not as a diagnosis of a particular phone or account. Verizon’s wireless-device troubleshooting guidance covers signal-related issues.

Local network congestion or an event

Heavy use at a crowded event can temporarily affect data speeds. An unexpected network event can also leave more traffic on the network that remains available. Verizon says speeds may improve when congestion clears or a device reaches an uncongested cell site. If the slowdown happens only at a particular place or busy time, that pattern may point toward local network conditions, but it does not confirm the cause.

Plan-related data controls

Depending on the plan, a data-control feature may reduce speeds after a limit is reached. Check your plan and account settings in Verizon’s account tools before assuming the phone or network is at fault; the applicable terms depend on your account.

Why home Wi-Fi may feel slow

Distance and obstacles

A device far from the router, or separated from it by walls, furniture, appliances, or other objects, may have a weaker Wi-Fi connection. Try the same device closer to the router. If performance improves there but not in a distant room, local Wi-Fi coverage is a likely factor, though that test does not establish the exact cause.

Connected devices and activity

Review how many devices are connected and what they are doing. Multiple devices using the connection can affect the experience, and the symptoms may not be the same on every device. Compare devices in the same room before changing equipment.

Cables, settings, or router issues

Loose or disconnected cables, settings, or a router problem can also affect service. Verizon recommends checking connections and settings and restarting the router. Equipment instructions can vary, so follow the instructions for your router.

Use tests to locate the slowdown

Compare devices and locations

  1. Confirm whether the affected device is using Verizon cellular data or home Wi-Fi.
  2. If it is Wi-Fi, check another device and test the affected device near the router. Note whether the problem follows one device, multiple devices, or a particular room.
  3. If possible, connect a compatible device to the router with Ethernet and compare its performance with Wi-Fi. A better wired result suggests the Wi-Fi link may be the weak point; it does not by itself identify the underlying cause.

Run Verizon’s router speed test

The Verizon Home app can test router download and upload speeds. Verizon says these measurements are from the router to its network; they are not a guarantee of the speeds a device will receive over Wi-Fi. Use the result alongside a device-level test and the wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison, rather than treating it as a direct measurement of every room or device. Verizon Home app FAQs describe the app’s speed-test feature.

What to do, in order

  1. Check for a service issue. Use Verizon’s address-based network status and support tools to look for an outage or network issue. The status depends on your location; a general explanation cannot establish whether your address is affected. Check Verizon network status.
  2. Check the router-to-network connection. Run the router speed test in the Verizon Home app and note its download and upload results.
  3. Check local Wi-Fi. Move closer to the router, reduce practical obstructions, review connected-device activity, and check that cables are connected.
  4. Try Ethernet or restart the router. A wired test can help separate Wi-Fi performance from the router’s connection. Verizon describes unplugging a router for about a minute and reconnecting it as a reboot step; follow your equipment’s instructions if they differ.
  5. Improve coverage only if the problem is coverage. Reposition the router or an existing extender. If weak Wi-Fi is limited to certain parts of the home, a compatible extender may help reach those areas.
  6. Contact Verizon about unresolved issues. Use Verizon’s support and account tools for service-specific troubleshooting, particularly when the router’s connection is slow or a network issue may be involved.

When a Wi-Fi extender can—and cannot—help

An extender is a possible fix when the router’s Wi-Fi reaches some parts of the home poorly. It will not fix cellular congestion, a Verizon outage, or a slow connection between the router and Verizon’s network. Check compatibility with your equipment and service terms before buying one. Verizon discusses extenders and other Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Verizon wireless home internet: check the address and gateway placement

Wireless home internet availability is address-specific: eligibility at a neighbor’s home, even on the same block, does not establish eligibility at yours. Verizon says service may require a direct line of sight between the home and a cell site. Confirm availability for the exact service address. For LTE Home, Verizon directs customers to the My Verizon app to find a suitable gateway location. See Verizon’s 5G Home Internet information and LTE Home Internet FAQs for service-specific details.
