A used PlayStation can be listed above the price of a new one when stock of a particular model is scarce and a seller prices the remaining units according to demand. That does not mean used consoles generally sell for more: a high listing is an asking price, not proof of a completed sale, and the comparison only makes sense when the model, edition, bundle, condition, and total cost match.

The key question is not whether a console is labeled “used” or “new,” but what you receive, who supports it, and what an equivalent system costs today. Prices can change quickly when inventory returns, a new model is announced, or a retailer changes its listing.

How a used console can end up with a higher price

The mismatch usually comes down to availability and seller pricing. A buyer wants a specific PlayStation model; new stock of that model is limited or unavailable; and a retailer or reseller can ask more than Sony’s recommended retail price. Used and refurbished listings for that same model may then reflect the shortage rather than the console’s original price or condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That premium can persist even though the unit has been opened or previously owned. Sellers are pricing access to a scarce configuration, not simply calculating depreciation from its launch price. If a new console is sitting on a retailer’s page but cannot actually be ordered, or if orders are delayed indefinitely, a buyer may compare against the few units available elsewhere. The result is a high used listing beside an unavailable new listing.

For a dated example, Sony announced on March 27, 2026, that new recommended retail prices would take effect on April 2, 2026. In the United States, those prices became $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony attributed the global increase to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape,” without identifying one specific cost as the cause. Sony also published recommended prices for the UK, Europe, and Japan. These are recommended retail prices, not a promise that a console is in stock or available at that price.

Tom’s Hardware reported that GameStop had refurbished PS5 Pro listings at $1,399.99 when new PS5 Pro units were out of stock at several retailers. The listing was $500 above Sony’s $899.99 US recommended price. It is an example of a price gap at a particular moment—not evidence that refurbished PS5 Pros typically cost more, that buyers paid the listed amount, or that every high-priced listing has the same cause. The report discussed component supply and demand as context; that does not establish the explanation for every individual seller’s price.

A listing can also remain online after the market has changed. A reseller may test a high price, forget to update it, or have only one unit left. Treat the number as an invitation to investigate, not as a reliable valuation.

Why “used,” “new,” and “refurbished” are not enough to compare

Those labels do not tell you whether two listings offer the same product or the same protections. A private-sale console, a retailer-refurbished system, a manufacturer-certified refurb, and a new console may differ in wear, inspection, included items, warranty, returns, and buyer protection. A higher price can reflect a better-supported purchase, but the label alone does not prove that it does.

Listing type What to establish before comparing
New Confirm the exact model and edition, current stock, checkout price, seller, and return terms.
Open-box Ask whether the console was used, what accessories are present, and what warranty and return rights apply. The label alone does not establish these terms.
Retailer-refurbished Find out what was inspected or replaced and who provides the warranty and accepts returns.
Private-sale used Check condition and operation directly, confirm the included items and console status, and understand what protection—if any—the seller offers.
Sony certified-refurbished For the US offer described on Sony Direct’s page, the 825 GB PS5 includes a 12-month manufacturer warranty; Sony notes that certified-refurbished products may have minor cosmetic imperfections. Do not assume these terms apply in another country or to another offer.

Warranty can be a meaningful part of the price difference. Sony’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by Sony’s warranty, while certified-refurbished PlayStation products do include warranty. That distinction is specific to the US guidance; check the warranty terms that apply where you live and to the exact seller and product.

“Refurbished” also describes a process, not a universal grade. One seller may clean and power-test a return; another may replace worn parts and provide a documented inspection. Ask for the standard in writing, including what happens if a fault appears after delivery.

Check that you are comparing the same PlayStation

Before judging the price, match the configuration. A PS5 Pro is not comparable to a standard PS5; a disc edition and a digital edition are different configurations; and a bundle may include items that an individual-console listing does not. Storage or model group and region can matter too. A price comparison across unlike products can make an ordinary listing look inflated—or make an expensive bundle look like a bargain when its extras are not useful to you.

  • Model and edition: Match Pro versus standard and disc versus digital. Confirm the model designation rather than relying on a seller’s shortened title.
  • Condition: Compare new with new, or identify precisely what “refurbished,” “open-box,” or “used” means for each seller.
  • Bundle: List the controller or controllers, cables, stand, disc drive, and games actually included. Value only extras you want and would otherwise buy.
  • Price at checkout: Include shipping and other charges, then compare with the price and availability of new stock now—not only an old recommended price or a headline listing.
  • Protection: Compare written warranty, return window, and buyer-protection terms, not just the console price.
  • Region: Check that the seller’s warranty and return policy apply in your country. Sony’s certified-refurbished terms cited here are for a US offer and should not be generalized.

Do not assign full retail value to a game you would never play or a second controller you do not need. Conversely, a missing stand, disc drive, or official controller can erase an apparent saving if you must purchase it separately. Write down the replacement cost before deciding.

How to assess a used PlayStation listing

  1. Identify the exact console. Ask for the model and edition, storage or model group where relevant, region, and a clear list of what is included. Confirm that the photographs show the unit being sold, not stock imagery.
  2. Get a precise account of its condition. For a refurbished unit, ask what was inspected, repaired, or replaced. For a private sale, ask about damage and whether the system has had operating problems. Do not treat “tested” as proof until you know what was tested.
  3. Ask for evidence that it works. Sony’s US buying guide recommends asking for video proof of testing. Where applicable, request evidence that it powers on, connects, and reads discs. If you can inspect it in person, check the ports, image quality, signs of damage, and whether it overheats during operation.
  4. Confirm console status before paying. Sony recommends checking that the console has not been reported lost or stolen and that the seller has deactivated it. Resolve uncertainty about status before handing over money; an attractive price does not compensate for a console you cannot use as intended.
  5. Verify who stands behind the sale. Check the seller’s history and reputation, then read the actual warranty and return terms. If a listing says “refurbished,” establish whether the seller, a retailer, or the manufacturer provides any support.
  6. Compare the real totals. Add shipping and any required extras, then compare the total with a same-model new listing that is actually available. Do not count an included game or accessory at full retail value if you would not otherwise buy it.
  7. Save the listing details. Keep screenshots or the written description showing the model, accessories, condition, warranty, and return promise. This makes it easier to challenge a materially different item.

What rising interest does—and does not—tell you

TechRadar reported on April 14, 2026, that UK marketplace Gumtree saw a 93% year-on-year increase in enquiries for pre-owned consoles. This indicates more enquiries on that marketplace, not a 93% increase in completed sales, a measured rise across the entire UK market, or a global demand statistic. Interest can help explain why some sellers test higher prices, but an enquiry figure cannot establish what a particular console is worth or whether its asking price is realistic.

Demand can be uneven by model and location. A buyer may be willing to pay for a PS5 Pro while standard PS5 stock is plentiful, or for a disc model when a local store carries only digital units. A marketplace enquiry can also represent curiosity rather than a completed purchase. Use it as context, not as a price formula.

There is no representative, independently audited figure establishing how often used PlayStations sell above equivalent new consoles. A striking listing should therefore be treated as a signal to compare carefully, not as proof of a general market rule.

When paying more for a refurbished console might make sense

A refurbished unit priced above a private-sale used console can still offer a better overall deal if it comes with documented inspection, a warranty, and return terms that matter to you. Sony’s US certified-refurbished PS5 offer is one concrete example: the cited page describes an 825 GB system with a 12-month manufacturer warranty, while warning that minor cosmetic imperfections may remain. Its stated terms are for that US offer, so verify the current listing and regional conditions before relying on them.

The premium is easier to justify when the alternative is an untested private sale with no return route, but only if the warranty is real and usable. Check its duration, provider, exclusions, shipping responsibility, and whether proof of purchase is required. A short retailer return window and a manufacturer warranty solve different problems, so count both separately.

That does not make every refurbished console worth a premium. Compare the extra cost with the protection actually provided, the condition you will accept, the items included, and the price of a new unit that is currently available. If the seller cannot explain the refurbishment standard or the warranty does not apply to your purchase, the word “refurbished” by itself adds little confidence.

Common price-comparison traps

  • Using the wrong baseline: Comparing a used listing with Sony’s dated recommended price while ignoring the current checkout price, taxes, shipping, or a current sale.
  • Comparing an unavailable new unit: A product page that cannot be ordered is not the same as stock you can receive.
  • Confusing asking and selling prices: A seller may list at $1,399.99 without finding a buyer at that amount.
  • Ignoring bundle differences: A controller, stand, disc drive, or game may be missing or may not have useful value to you.
  • Assuming all refurbs are equivalent: Inspection, replacement parts, warranty, and returns vary by provider.
  • Overlooking status and account issues: A console reported lost or stolen, or one the seller has not deactivated, can create problems that price alone cannot solve.
  • Generalizing across countries: Sony’s US warranty and certified-refurbished details do not automatically apply elsewhere.

A practical decision rule

First decide which exact model and edition you want, then compare available options on a like-for-like basis. If a new unit is in stock at a lower total price with suitable returns, an above-new used listing needs a specific, worthwhile advantage to justify the difference. That might be a bundle you genuinely want or a clearly stated refurbishment and warranty benefit. If there is no such benefit, wait, look for another seller, or reconsider whether you need that particular configuration now.

Judge the transaction rather than the headline: model, condition, useful bundle contents, live availability, final cost, seller, warranty, returns, and console status together determine value. A seller can ask more than Sony’s recommended price, but the asking price does not establish what the console is worth—or what anyone will pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a used PS5 usually more expensive than a new PS5?

No. A used PlayStation is more likely to cost less when equivalent new stock is available. Above-new listings are model- and moment-specific examples usually linked to scarcity, seller pricing, or differences in bundle and support. There is no representative figure showing how often used consoles sell above equivalent new ones.

Why was a refurbished PS5 Pro listed at $1,399.99?

Tom’s Hardware reported that GameStop listed refurbished PS5 Pro units at $1,399.99 while Sony’s US recommended price was $899.99 and new units were out of stock at several retailers. That documents a $500 listing gap at that time; it does not prove a completed sale or a typical market price.

Is Sony’s recommended retail price the price I should expect to pay?

It is a useful dated baseline, not a guarantee of stock or availability. Sony announced US prices of $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro effective April 2, 2026. Compare those figures with a same-model unit you can actually order, including shipping and other charges.

Does certified-refurbished mean the same thing as used?

No. A certified-refurbished product should have a defined seller or manufacturer process and may include warranty and returns. Sony’s US certified-refurbished page describes an 825 GB PS5 with a 12-month manufacturer warranty and notes possible minor cosmetic imperfections. Terms vary by offer and country.

Does Sony warranty cover a privately purchased used PlayStation?

Sony’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by Sony’s warranty, while certified-refurbished PlayStation products do include warranty. Check the exact terms for your country, seller, and product rather than assuming either outcome.

What should I check before buying a used console?

Match the model and edition, confirm every included accessory, ask what was tested or replaced, request video proof where possible, inspect ports and image quality, check for overheating or damage, review seller history and return terms, verify it is not reported lost or stolen, and ensure the seller has deactivated it.

Should I buy a second controller with a refurbished PS5?

Only if you need one. The Sony US certified-refurbished listing described here includes a DualSense controller, so adding another controller automatically may duplicate an included item. Compare the exact bundle before spending more.

The Bottom Line

A used PlayStation can cost more than a new one when a particular model is scarce, but the asking price may reflect temporary availability and seller strategy rather than lasting value. Match the model, edition, condition, bundle, total checkout cost, warranty, returns, seller, and console status before paying a premium.
