A USB-C plug only tells you the shape of the connector; it does not guarantee that your phone can send audio through it. The phone must support USB-C digital audio, and a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter may also need a compatible built-in DAC (digital-to-analog converter). Headset controls and calls can have separate limitations. Check the exact phone model, accessory design and settings before assuming the port or headphones are broken.
USB-C is a connector, not a guarantee of audio support
USB-C ports can handle charging, data, video and, on some phones, digital audio. Manufacturers do not implement every USB-C capability on every model. A phone can have a USB-C charging and data port that does not accept the particular audio accessory you connected.
Google’s Pixel guidance says USB-C earbuds require both a USB-C port and USB-C digital-audio support. It directs owners to their device specifications or manufacturer when that support is unclear. The same principle applies to other Android phones: confirm audio support for the exact model rather than relying on the connector’s appearance.
Compatibility is also directional. A headset can work on one USB-C phone and fail on another because the phones expose different audio features, power behavior or accessory requirements. There is no universal cross-brand matrix that proves every USB-C headset or adapter will work everywhere.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The four compatibility checks that matter
1. Does the phone support USB-C digital audio?
USB-C digital headphones contain electronics that receive a digital audio stream from the phone. If the phone does not provide audio over USB-C, the headset may remain silent even though charging and file transfer work normally. Look up the full model name and regional variant in the manufacturer’s specifications or support pages. If the documentation is silent, ask the manufacturer before buying an accessory.
2. Does a 3.5 mm adapter contain the required DAC?
A traditional 3.5 mm headset expects an analog signal. A USB-C phone produces digital data, so an adapter used for this conversion generally needs a DAC to turn the digital stream into analog sound. Samsung’s guidance for relevant newer Galaxy models says to use a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC and to verify DAC compatibility when choosing another manufacturer’s adapter.
“USB-C to 3.5 mm” describes the physical conversion, not necessarily the electronics inside it. A listing that only promises charging, or an inexpensive passive adapter designed for a different phone, may not provide the conversion your model requires. DAC-equipped still does not mean universally compatible: confirm the phone model and the functions you need.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
3. Are calls, buttons and microphones supported?
Audio playback and headset features are separate questions. A phone may play music through USB-C headphones while failing to route phone calls, recognize the microphone or respond to inline buttons. Google notes that some devices do not support calls through USB-C earbuds. Samsung likewise cautions that not every USB-C headset feature works on every device.
Check support for the specific functions you use: listening, voice calls, microphone input, volume buttons, play/pause controls and any remote or digital processing built into the headset. Do not infer feature support from successful music playback.
4. Could the problem be physical or software-related?
A compatible accessory can still fail because of a damaged cable, bent or dirty connector, a case blocking full insertion, muted or low volume, a temporary phone fault or outdated software. These causes are common enough to test before replacing hardware.

What the symptom usually tells you
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Useful next test |
|---|---|---|
| No sound and no accessory response | Phone lacks USB-C digital-audio support, adapter lacks a required DAC, connector is not fully seated, or the accessory is faulty | Confirm model specifications, then test a known-working compatible headset or adapter |
| Music works but calls do not | Call routing or microphone support is not implemented for that phone/accessory combination | Test the microphone in a recorder or voice app and check the phone maker’s feature notes |
| Buttons do nothing | Control signaling is unsupported even though playback is supported | Try the headset on a device known to support its controls; use the phone’s on-screen controls as a comparison |
| Intermittent audio when the plug moves | Debris, loose fit, damaged cable or worn connector | Remove the case, inspect and gently clean the connector, then test without moving the cable |
| Adapter works on another phone but not yours | Different digital-audio or DAC requirements | Check your exact model’s requirements; do not treat the other phone as proof of compatibility |
How USB-C headphones and adapters handle sound
With USB-C digital headphones, the phone sends audio data through the port and the headset’s electronics convert that data for its speakers. The phone must recognize the accessory and expose a supported USB-C audio path.
With a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, the adapter performs the digital-to-analog conversion when it includes a DAC. The 3.5 mm plug then carries the analog signal to ordinary headphones. If the adapter’s DAC is absent or incompatible, the phone can detect a physical connection without producing usable sound.
Because the conversion can happen inside the accessory, two adapters with identical plugs can behave differently. The meaningful purchase details are the exact phone compatibility, digital-audio support and DAC implementation—not merely whether the package shows USB-C on one end and 3.5 mm on the other.

Step-by-step troubleshooting
- Identify the exact phone model. Record the model name, generation and region shown in Settings or on the device packaging. Support can differ between closely related models and regional editions.
- Verify USB-C audio support. Search the phone manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation for USB-C digital audio. If the documentation does not confirm it, contact the manufacturer instead of assuming that charging and data imply audio.
- Check the accessory type. Determine whether you have digital USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter. For an adapter, look for an explicit built-in DAC and compatibility information for your phone family.
- Test the accessory elsewhere. Connect the headphones or adapter to another device that is documented to support that audio method. This checks the accessory without changing your phone.
- Test the phone with a known-working accessory. Use a headset or adapter that is confirmed compatible with the phone. If it works, the original accessory is the stronger suspect; if neither works, focus on phone support, settings or the port.
- Remove anything that can prevent a solid connection. Take off a thick case, disconnect other USB accessories and insert the plug fully. Examine the cable, plug and phone port for visible damage or debris. Do not force a plug or probe the port with a sharp object.
- Check sound and routing. Raise media volume, confirm that the phone is not muted and look in the Sound or Connected devices area of Settings for a USB-audio option. Menu names vary by manufacturer and software version. Some phones require USB-C audio to be enabled.
- Restart and update. Restart the phone, then install any available system or firmware update. A restart can clear a temporary accessory-recognition failure; an update may address device-specific bugs.
- Separate playback from call testing. Play a local or streaming track, then make a test call or record a voice memo. Note whether speakers, microphone and controls behave differently.
- Escalate with evidence. If a documented-compatible accessory still fails, give the phone and accessory manufacturers the model numbers, software version, tests already completed and the exact symptom.
How to choose a replacement
Use the following checklist when comparing USB-C headphones or adapters:
- Exact-model compatibility: The listing or manufacturer should identify support for your phone model or family, not just “works with Android.”
- Digital-audio support: USB-C headphones must use the audio method your phone provides.
- Built-in DAC for 3.5 mm conversion: The adapter should explicitly state that it has a DAC and that the DAC is compatible with your phone. Samsung’s support wording is: “If you choose an adaptor from a different manufacturer, always ensure that it is DAC compatible.”
- Required features: Confirm calls, microphone input, volume controls and other headset functions separately from basic playback.
- Manufacturer qualification: Prefer accessories identified as compatible or certified for the relevant phone family. Certification is useful evidence, but still check the exact model and software requirements.
- Clear technical description: Avoid listings that only show connector pictures or promise charging and data without describing audio support.
There is no established universal rule that every DAC-equipped adapter works with every phone. Treat DAC presence as a requirement to verify, not a guarantee of success.

Google Pixel phones
Google’s accessory guidance requires a USB-C port plus USB-C digital-audio support for USB-C earbuds. It recommends checking the device specifications or contacting the device manufacturer. Google also warns that some devices may not support calls through USB-C earbuds and that USB-C audio may need to be enabled in sound settings.

Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung’s current UK support guidance for relevant newer Galaxy models recommends a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC and says to check DAC compatibility for third-party adapters. It also notes that USB-C headset features are not supported on all devices.
That is model-specific advice. A Galaxy phone outside the models or region covered by the guidance may have different requirements, so consult its own support documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon purchasing and troubleshooting mistakes
- Assuming every USB-C port carries audio: Port shape does not establish digital-audio support.
- Buying a passive-looking adapter for a phone that requires an active DAC: Verify the electronics, not just the connector ends.
- Using successful charging as proof of audio compatibility: Charging, data and audio are separate capabilities.
- Testing only one component: A failed headset test cannot distinguish a bad headset from an unsupported phone. Test both directions with a known-working accessory.
- Expecting all controls to transfer: Playback may work while calls, microphones or buttons remain unsupported.
- Ignoring the case, port condition or software: Physical obstruction and outdated software can mimic incompatibility.
- Relying on generic claims: “Universal,” “Android compatible” or “USB-C audio” does not replace model-specific confirmation.
When the manufacturer should take over
Contact the phone manufacturer when the specifications are unclear, the port may be damaged, or multiple documented-compatible accessories fail. Contact the accessory maker when its product does not work on a phone it explicitly lists, or when only one function—such as the microphone or controls—fails. Provide both model numbers, the phone’s software version, whether a DAC is present, and the results of the separate-device tests. This information lets support distinguish an unsupported feature from a defective unit.
The practical answer
USB-C headphones or adapters fail when the phone and accessory disagree about how audio is delivered, converted or controlled. Confirm USB-C digital-audio support first; for 3.5 mm headphones, verify a compatible built-in DAC; then test the accessory and phone separately, remove physical and software causes, and check calls and controls independently from music playback. If the documented requirements are met and the failure remains, manufacturer support is the appropriate next step.
