Unreleased game footage can become public through a network intrusion, an exposed development build, or ordinary production workflows that put files in many hands. Once it spreads, a publisher may investigate, tighten security, or seek copyright takedowns, while players and media debate material that may look very different from the finished game. No available industry-wide data establishes which route is most common or what leaks typically cost.
Why do unreleased games leak?
There is no single route. The documented possibilities range from deliberate cyberattacks to mistakes in handling development files and unauthorized disclosures. The examples below show how exposure can happen; they do not establish which cause is most frequent.
Network intrusions and compromised accounts
A breach can expose footage, development tools, source code, or other confidential files. In statements about a June 2021 intrusion, Electronic Arts (EA) said a limited amount of game source code and related tools had been stolen. In an update dated July 14, EA said an extortion threat had been made and some files had been released publicly. The company said it worked with federal law-enforcement officials, made security improvements, and did not expect a material risk to players, games, or its business. Those are EA’s statements about that incident, not a general measure of breach impact. EA’s incident statements
Account compromise is a related but distinct risk: stolen player credentials or account access do not, by themselves, mean unreleased game footage was exposed. The European Audiovisual Observatory’s 2024 sector report describes a January 2022 phishing incident affecting around 50 prominent FIFA 22 player accounts; that figure concerns player accounts, not a footage leak. Exposed builds and production files
Game development produces many versions of a project for testing, certification, preview events, regional releases, and other work. Denuvo by Irdeto’s June 2, 2026 article identifies possible exposure points such as forgotten or public build branches, demo environments containing unintended material, review builds that remain available beyond approved windows, debug builds, PDB files, and legacy binaries. This is vendor-authored guidance describing risks, not an independently measured count of incidents. Denuvo by Irdeto’s discussion of pre-release security
Authorized access by an outside reviewer, quality-assurance provider, localization team, influencer, or platform partner is part of many production workflows. Access creates a point that needs managing; it does not show that any particular group caused a leak.

Human disclosure
Information can also be shared accidentally or without authorization by someone who has access. Ubisoft’s Code of Conduct instructs staff to protect confidential game, project, budget, and strategy information—including information that remains unreleased after an announcement—and to limit sharing to people with a legitimate need. It also advises care in public spaces and on social media. This establishes that companies treat disclosure as an operational risk, not how often an individual is responsible. Ubisoft Code of Conduct
What happens after a game leak?
The footage spreads and shapes discussion
Leaked files can be copied and discussed beyond the original point of exposure. Andreas Ullmann, a product manager at Denuvo by Irdeto, wrote on June 2, 2026: “Today, leaked screenshots, gameplay footage and build information can circulate across social platforms, Discord communities, streaming channels and generated-content ecosystems within minutes.” That is the vendor’s characterization of how quickly material may circulate, not a measured industry-wide average. As clips circulate, attention can shift to bugs, missing assets, visual effects, or features that are still changing. A clip shows one build at one point in development; it is not reliable proof of the final game’s appearance, performance, feature set, or release plan. The closer a build is to launch, the more it may resemble the release version, but the footage alone does not establish what will ship.
Planned marketing may be disrupted
A leak can pre-empt an official reveal or redirect attention from planned announcements to unfinished content. Denuvo describes these as potential marketing risks, including technical concerns overshadowing gameplay ideas and less control over campaign timing. These are plausible effects cited by a vendor, not quantified outcomes shown to follow every leak.

Teams, reputation, and partners may be affected
Ubisoft’s Code of Conduct warns: “Leaks, rumors and inaccurate speculation can lead to a loss in value, undermine our team’s morale, damage our reputation and the trust of our partners.” The statement describes risks the company recognizes; it does not quantify losses or show that every incident causes them. Companies may investigate and tighten security
Depending on what was exposed and how, a publisher may investigate the incident, work with law enforcement or security specialists, and change access controls or other protections. EA’s response to its 2021 intrusion is one example of a company reporting both cooperation with federal officials and security improvements; it should not be treated as a universal response or outcome. EA’s incident statements
Copyright takedowns may target leaked footage
Take-Two Interactive’s Rockstar Games Customer Support policy says that posting in-game footage from leaked copies before official release will result in a takedown notice, regardless of how the copy was obtained. The policy page was last updated January 10, 2025. It applies to Rockstar Games copyrighted material and should not be read as the policy of every publisher or the law in every jurisdiction. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge a leaked clip
- Ask what the material is. Footage, a playable build, source code, player data, and a release schedule are different kinds of exposed material with different implications.
- Consider the build’s maturity. A prototype or test build may differ substantially from a near-launch review build. A clip rarely tells you its full context on its own.
- Separate confirmed facts from claims. A company statement, an institutional report, a vendor’s security commentary, and an unverified social post do not provide the same level of evidence.
- Do not infer a delay or financial loss from the leak alone. The sources cited here do not establish that delays or a particular dollar loss are normal consequences.
What the available evidence cannot establish
The available sources document several ways footage or game files can be exposed and several possible responses. They do not provide a representative industry-wide frequency ranking of leak causes, a typical financial cost, or evidence that one outcome—such as a release delay—usually follows. Named incidents and company policies are useful examples, not a statistical picture of the entire games industry.
