You may not be able to download a GIF-style post from X (formerly Twitter) because X does not document a universal option to save those posts as .gif files. Its built-in download instructions cover eligible videos instead. If you want media attached to your own account, an X archive is a separate option that can include GIFs.
Why an X “GIF” may not download as a GIF file
“GIF” often describes how a post looks or plays, not necessarily the file format X makes available for download. A third-party downloader describes many GIF-style posts as video-delivered, but that is not an official format specification for every post. X’s Help Center groups native videos and GIFs for playback, while its download instructions describe a Download video control for eligible videos—not a general GIF-file download. X’s video help page does not promise that every GIF-style post can be saved as a .gif file.
When X lets you download a video post
X documents downloads for certain videos, subject to the post’s date, the uploader’s setting, and the subscriber’s account. These rules apply to X’s video download feature; they do not establish that a GIF-style post will have a GIF download option.
- Account: X says the feature is available to Premium subscribers.
- Post date: Videos uploaded starting July 25, 2023 may be downloadable. X says videos posted before that date are not downloadable through this feature.
- Uploader setting: The uploader can turn off Allow video to be downloaded while composing the post. If downloads are disabled, the post is not available through this feature. X says the choice cannot be changed later for that post.
To check for the option, open the video post, tap its three-dot menu, and select Download video. If that menu item is absent, the post may not meet X’s download conditions; the feature is not a way to obtain a separate .gif file. See X’s current video instructions for its documented steps and eligibility rules.

Which official option fits what you want to save?
| Option | What it can include | Who or what it covers | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post menu: Download video | An eligible video post | A video posted on X; not a guaranteed GIF-file download | Premium subscriber; video uploaded starting July 25, 2023; uploader has not disabled downloads |
| X archive | Images, videos, and GIFs attached to posts, Direct Messages, or Moments | Information associated with the account requesting the archive | Request through account settings, complete identity verification, and wait while X prepares it; X says preparation may take a few days |
The archive is a snapshot of information associated with the requesting account, not a documented way to download arbitrary media from other people’s public posts. X’s archive instructions explain how to request it and what it may contain.
What to do if you need a GIF from your own account
- Open your X account settings and start a request to download your archive. Use X’s archive instructions for the current settings path.
- Complete X’s identity-verification steps for the account.
- Wait for X to prepare the archive; the Help Center says this may take a few days.
- Once the archive is available, look for media associated with your posts, Direct Messages, or Moments. The archive may include images, videos, and GIFs, but it is limited to data associated with the requesting account.
Downloading does not automatically grant reuse rights
Being able to save media is not the same as having permission to repost it. X’s Fair Use Policy says some uses of copyrighted material may not require permission, but X cannot advise whether a particular use qualifies as fair use. The policy does not determine whether a specific download or reuse is lawful.

That license to X is not a general license for other users to republish the content. If you plan to reuse someone else’s media, get permission or seek appropriate legal advice.
