Tournament organizers use a different League of Legends patch to create a controlled competitive environment. Instead of asking teams to adapt to every live-service balance update immediately, an event can lock everyone to one version long enough for practice, scouting, counter-strategy and fair comparison. Riot Games described this rationale for Worlds in 2020, while also acknowledging the cost: a stable patch can allow a powerful strategy to dominate for too long.
There is no single patch rule for every tournament. A major international event, a regional league and a community competition can operate under different policies. The exact version must therefore come from that event’s rulebook or official announcement, not from a general assumption about professional play.
What it means when a tournament uses a different patch
League of Legends is a live service. On the public game client, Riot can change champion numbers, items, runes, objectives and systems throughout the season. Those updates are intended to keep ordinary play healthy, correct overpowered or weak options and respond to data from a very large player population.

The important distinction is between the rolling live-service cadence and an event-specific competitive environment. Riot’s 2020 explanation contrasted regular professional play, which it described as receiving patches every two weeks, with Worlds being played on one patch for six weeks. That was a historical description of the policy discussed in that article, not a universal schedule that should be applied to every tournament or every current season.
Why a stable patch helps teams prepare
A shared strategic baseline
When all competitors use one version, teams know that their scrims, scouting reports and official games describe the same game. A champion’s damage, an item’s cost and a jungle objective’s rules do not change between practice and the match because a mid-event live update arrived.
That consistency matters in a game with an enormous number of interactions. Teams can test lane matchups, item timings, jungle routes, objective setups and draft combinations repeatedly. Coaches can build a playbook around observed results rather than rewriting it after each balance patch. Players can spend preparation time learning counters and execution instead of simply relearning the basic numbers.
More time to optimize and counter
A fixed version gives teams an opportunity to find second- and third-order strategies. A first team may reveal a strong draft; another can study its weaknesses; a third can develop a lane assignment, early rotation or ban strategy that attacks the counter. That chain of discovery is one reason a major event can become more strategically deep as it progresses.
Riot’s stated Worlds rationale was that a consistent patch creates a strategic playing field on which teams can prepare, optimize strategies and develop counters. The fairness argument is practical: competitors receive the same conditions and a comparable amount of time to understand them.
Reliable match operations
Locking the game version also reduces operational uncertainty. Tournament administrators can validate the client, observer tools, replays and practice environment against one known build. Players are less likely to encounter a balance change between a morning scrim and an evening series. A controlled version does not eliminate technical problems, but it prevents routine live-service updates from becoming a second source of disruption.

The trade-off: stability can create a stale meta
The same stability that enables preparation can make a dominant strategy entrenched. If one champion, item combination or team pattern has too few practical counters, teams may be forced to spend most drafts banning it or copying it. New live patches that would normally weaken the strategy do not apply to the locked event version.
Riot used the 2017 Worlds Ardent Censer strategy as a historical example of this problem. A powerful item interaction shaped support choices and team fights so heavily that the tournament meta became narrow. The example is not evidence that every fixed-patch event will repeat that outcome; it illustrates the risk organizers must weigh against the benefits of consistency.
Why organizers may avoid large changes just before a major event
A large systemic change immediately before an international tournament can be fair in one sense—everyone receives it—but still undermine competitive preparation. Teams may have only a short period to discover its strongest interactions, and a small number of early scrims can determine a tournament’s direction. Riot has described trying to limit large systemic changes before Worlds for this reason.
A smaller, targeted change can address a clearly excessive strategy without rebuilding the entire game. Whether an organizer uses that option depends on the event’s policy, the seriousness of the problem and the amount of testing time available. The decision is not a simple choice between “always use the newest patch” and “never change anything.”
How professional balance decisions differ from ordinary play
Professional matches provide a much smaller sample than the millions of games played across the public population. Riot’s 2020 pro-balance explanation cited roughly 200 professional matches on a single patch when discussing the limits of statistical conclusions. With a sample that small, a champion’s win rate can be distorted by who picked it, which teams used it, the matchups selected and the side of the map.
For that reason, Riot said it looked at pick-and-ban presence as a key professional signal rather than relying on win rate alone. A champion that is nearly always picked or banned is affecting drafts even when its recorded victories do not look exceptional. Presence can reveal that teams consider an option strategically mandatory or unusually dangerous.

Historical intervention thresholds from Riot’s 2020 article
The following figures belong to that 2020 policy explanation. They are useful for understanding how Riot described different tolerance levels, but they should not be presented as current 2026 thresholds.
| Situation described by Riot in 2020 | One-patch presence threshold | Two-consecutive-patch threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Regular professional play | 95% | 85% |
| MSI or Worlds | 90% | 80% |
The lower thresholds for MSI and Worlds reflected the greater importance of those events: Riot described a willingness to intervene at a lower level of draft dominance on the biggest stages. Again, these numbers are historical figures from one article, not a confirmed rule for every current tournament.
Why the newest live patch is not automatically the fairest
Using the live client sounds neutral, but it can produce unequal preparation. A team whose region practices at a different time, has a different scrim schedule or adapts faster to a surprise change may gain an advantage unrelated to the intended contest. A tournament patch gives organizers a date on which the rules of the game become fixed and gives every team a common target.

The live patch represents the game ordinary players are currently experiencing. A locked event patch represents a deliberate test of teams under known conditions. The first is more current; the second is often easier to study and administer. Neither value automatically overrides the other.
Why different tournaments can make different choices
Major international events
International events bring together regions that may have developed different drafting habits and strategic styles. Riot’s published international-event design goals include meaningful games, cross-regional competition and competitive integrity. A stable patch can support those goals by giving teams from each region a common environment and enough time to prepare for unfamiliar opponents.
International formats also involve trade-offs. A patch that is stable enough for deep preparation may be too stale if a severe balance problem appears. An update that improves diversity may arrive too close to the event for teams to evaluate responsibly. The organizer must decide which risk is more damaging for that particular stage.

Regional leagues
Regional competitions operate within their own calendars and formats. The 2026 LoL Esports League Handbook describes a season made up of regional splits and international events and states that regions run their own split formats and styles. It does not provide a complete current patch assignment for every event.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That means a reader should not infer an exact patch from the handbook alone. A regional league’s rulebook, schedule announcement or match client notice is the authoritative place to find its competition version.
Community tournaments
Independent community competitions are governed in a separate context. Riot’s Community Competition Guidelines define the scope of the community framework and its exclusions, but the inspected guidance does not establish an unrestricted right for organizers to choose any patch they want.
A community organizer therefore needs to follow the applicable license and competition rules, then state the selected version clearly to participants. “We use the tournament patch” is not sufficient unless the organizer identifies what that means and how updates will be handled.
How to find the correct patch for an event
- Start with the event’s official rulebook. Look for sections titled competition version, game version, tournament realm, patch, or competitive environment.
- Check the organizer’s dated announcement. Patch decisions can change after a serious bug or balance issue, so use the notice for the specific split, stage and year.
- Confirm the scope. A qualifier, regular-season week, playoff and international stage may not use the same version.
- Read the emergency-change policy. Find out whether the organizer can disable a champion, apply a hotfix or move to another build after the version is locked.
- Verify the practice client. Teams should ensure that scrims, tournament accounts and official matches are all configured for the stated version.
If no event-specific source identifies a version, it is safer to say that the patch is not publicly established than to guess from the live client or from another tournament’s schedule.
What viewers should expect from a tournament patch
Players may see champions or items behave differently from their current solo-queue games. A balance change released on the public client might not appear in the event, while a champion considered weak on the newest patch could remain viable because the tournament version predates a later nerf. Broadcast analysts often discuss these differences because they explain why a draft that looks unusual to a viewer can be logical on the competition build.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Patch stability also means that the meta can evolve without any software update. Teams discover new picks, counters and map patterns through practice. A tournament can therefore look strategically different in its final week even though every game uses the same underlying version.
Common misconceptions
“Every professional match uses one permanent esports patch.”
False. Patch policy is event-specific and can differ between regular play, regional leagues, international stages and community competitions. Riot’s 2020 explanation is a historical account of particular pro and Worlds practices, not a universal rule.
“A tournament patch is chosen only to help the strongest team.”
A locked version is intended to give all teams a shared preparation target. It can still create winners and losers because some strategies fit the version better than others, but the stated purpose is consistency and competitive integrity rather than favoritism.
“The highest win rate tells organizers what to nerf.”
Riot explained that the professional sample can be small and that pick-and-ban presence may be more informative than win rate alone. Draft pressure, opponent quality and matchup selection all affect the meaning of a professional win rate.
“The 2020 thresholds are today’s policy.”
They are not confirmed as current. The 95%, 90%, 85% and 80% figures should be labeled as historical numbers from Riot’s 2020 pro-balance article unless a newer official policy replaces or confirms them.
Bottom line
Tournament organizers use different League of Legends patches to balance two competing needs: a stable game that teams can study deeply and a responsive game that does not allow a dominant strategy or serious balance problem to persist. Riot’s documented Worlds rationale favors a shared, controlled version for preparation and competitive integrity, while its historical discussion acknowledges the danger of an over-optimized meta. Because policies vary by event and year, the only reliable way to identify the current patch is to consult that tournament’s official rulebook or announcement.
