Nanoconfined water is electrically anisotropic: it has one effective permittivity parallel to a confining wall (ε∥) and another perpendicular to it (ε⊥). Surface-induced molecular alignment, layered hydrogen-bond networks and restricted dipole rotation make these two responses different. As a pore narrows, the bulk-like liquid core disappears, so the directional contrast usually becomes stronger.
The exact values are not universal. They depend on pore width, the number of molecular layers, wall chemistry and charge, field polarity, frequency and whether the result comes from simulation or experiment.
What “directional dielectric response” means
In bulk liquid water, molecules can rotate and translate in all directions, so a single scalar dielectric constant is often a useful approximation. A nanometre-scale slit, channel or pore breaks that symmetry. The electric displacement then depends on the field component being measured, which can be represented by a dielectric tensor rather than one number:

For a flat confining surface, the two most useful components are ε∥, for a field along the wall, and ε⊥, for a field normal to the wall. They describe how strongly water polarizes and screens each field component. A low ε⊥ does not mean the water cannot polarize at all; it means polarization correlations normal to the walls are much weaker than those within the plane.

How walls create anisotropy
Surface alignment removes rotational freedom
Water molecules next to a solid surface adopt preferred orientations because their oxygen and hydrogen atoms interact differently with that surface. Molecules cannot rotate freely through every angle, particularly in the direction that would point a dipole into or away from the wall. A normal electric field therefore has fewer accessible dipole rearrangements with which to respond.
Layered hydrogen bonds respond differently in-plane
Confinement organizes water into layers. Within each layer, hydrogen bonds can preserve collective in-plane rotations and dipole correlations even when motion across the slit is restricted. A field parallel to the wall couples to those remaining degrees of freedom, so ε∥ can be substantially larger than ε⊥.
The liquid core vanishes in narrow gaps
In a wide pore, a central region can retain bulk-like structure while only the interfaces are ordered. Reducing the gap removes that interior. Bilayer and monolayer films are dominated by wall-induced ordering, making the dielectric profile vary strongly across the entire pore. Simulations of graphene slits compare wide pores, bilayers and monolayers and find progressively more distinct parallel and perpendicular responses. Those authors also caution that narrow-pore predictions require water–graphene interaction parameters designed for that confinement regime, rather than parameters validated only for bulk water.

Why a normal field can be screened poorly
Screening requires charges and dipoles to rearrange so that their induced field opposes the applied field. In the normal direction, neighboring water dipoles are constrained by the two walls and by the layered hydrogen-bond network. Their perpendicular fluctuations and long-range correlations are suppressed, so the induced opposing field is weak. The resulting ε⊥ can be close to a low-permittivity interfacial value even while in-plane polarization remains much stronger.
A parallel field does not have to drive molecules through the walls. It can rotate dipoles within a layer and reorganize hydrogen bonds along the surface, processes that remain comparatively available. This is why the same water film can screen a tangential field well and a normal field poorly.
Field polarity can change the response
Direction is not only a matter of angle. In graphene-confined water, reversing the field can change which wall is encountered first and whether the field reinforces or opposes the surface’s preferred molecular orientation.

At the wall described in that study as the incoming-field wall, an applied field can oppose the existing alignment. The resulting differential permittivity—the incremental response to a small additional field—becomes nonmonotonic and can show a peak. The opposite wall and the central region show more bulk-like saturation. This behavior is different from quoting a single static dielectric constant: it describes a field-dependent slope and therefore can vary with field strength and polarity.

What pore size does to measured and simulated values
| System or regime | Confinement description | Directional result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graphene slit simulations | Wide pores, bilayers and monolayers | Parallel and perpendicular dielectric profiles become progressively more distinct as the gap narrows | Exact values depend on the water–graphene interaction model; narrow-pore parameters need confinement-specific validation |
| Charged-clay nanopore simulations (Underwood and Bourg, 2022) | Pore width reduced across hydrate states | Static relative permittivity fell by more than twenty-fold; the largest reported εr∥/εr⊥ was 6.2 for a three-layer hydrate | System-specific simulation results, not a universal constant for confined water |
| Moderate gaps in a 2025 Nature experiment | Gaps down to about 2–3 nm | ε⊥ was approximately 2; the in-plane value was comparable to bulk water or slightly larger | Experimental range and conditions apply only to that study’s materials and measurement method |
| Atomic-scale gaps in the same 2025 experiment | Only a few molecular layers | Water showed ferroelectric-like polarizability and superionic-like conductivity | A qualitatively different quasi-two-dimensional state, not simply a smaller version of ordinary bulk water |
The clay result illustrates the scale of the effect: a more than twenty-fold change can accompany narrowing, while a ratio of 6.2 between in-plane and perpendicular components was obtained for one three-layer hydrate. Neither number should be transferred to graphene, boron nitride, hydrophobic pores or another clay without matching the physical conditions.
Extreme confinement is not just “low-permittivity water”
The 2025 experiment separates two regimes. At moderate nanometre gaps, the normal response is already small—approximately ε⊥ = 2—while the in-plane response remains near the bulk value or slightly above it. At atomic-scale gaps containing only a few molecular layers, the water develops ferroelectric-like polarizability and superionic-like conductivity. In that limit, structural ordering and charge transport can change together, so a static dielectric value alone cannot describe the material’s electrical behavior.

Hydrophobic pores add electrostriction
Wall chemistry introduces another coupling between field and structure. In simulations of water in hydrophobic nanopores, an applied field drove electrostriction: the water density reached up to twice the bulk value. At the same time, the hydrogen-bond network was distorted and the permittivity dropped dramatically. A denser liquid therefore does not automatically screen better; the way molecules are packed and correlated matters more than density alone.

Before treating values from different papers as a contradiction, check all five axes below:
- Width and layer count: record the gap in nanometres and whether the pore contains a bulk-like core, several layers, a bilayer or a monolayer.
- Field orientation and polarity: distinguish ε∥ from ε⊥, and note which wall faces the incoming field when polarity is relevant.
- Wall material and charge: graphene, clay, boron nitride, hydrophobic surfaces and charged interfaces impose different molecular structures.
- Frequency and timescale: static, low-frequency, high-frequency and ultrafast responses probe different molecular motions.
- Observable and method: separate static permittivity, differential nonlinear permittivity, frequency-dependent dielectric spectra and conductivity; also note whether the result is simulated or measured experimentally.
Two studies can therefore report different “dielectric constants” while both are correct for their own geometry, field protocol and definition.

What this means for nanoscale devices
Models of capacitors, membranes, electrochemical channels and atomically thin fluid layers should use a directional dielectric description whenever the gap is comparable to a few molecular diameters. Using a bulk, isotropic value can misestimate the voltage drop across the pore, interfacial charging and the field needed to move ions. For a practical calculation, specify ε∥ and ε⊥ separately, state the frequency or static limit, and identify the wall model and hydration state used to obtain them.
The most defensible general conclusion is that confinement creates a dielectric tensor through interfacial structure and constrained dipole correlations. The tensor’s magnitude—and even whether the response is monotonic with field—must be established for the particular pore, surface and measurement regime.
