Indian shares reversed early gains on Monday, October 12, 2026, with the Nifty reported below 22,400 by 12:10 p.m. IST. In a later snapshot at 1:20 p.m. IST, Upstox put the index at 22,372.80, down 147.65 points, or 0.66%, and reported an intraday low of 22,352.35. These are intraday readings, not the closing level.

What happened to the Nifty and Sensex?

The market opened higher before turning lower. ETMarkets reported that the Sensex had opened more than 400 points higher, then erased its gains; its 12:10 p.m. IST update said the Nifty had slipped below 22,400. Upstox’s later 1:20 p.m. IST snapshot recorded the Nifty at 22,372.80, down 0.66%, and cited an intraday low of 22,352.35. The reports do not establish where either index finished the session.

  • ETMarkets’ update: Nifty FMCG and Nifty PSU Bank were each down more than 1%; Nifty Private Bank and Nifty IT were down more than 0.5%. Tech Mahindra was down nearly 4. ITC, SBI, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, L&T, NTPC, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank were among stocks reported falling by as much as 3%.
  • Upstox’s later account: It described an afternoon sell-off in FMCG and banking shares and named Tech Mahindra, ITC, Coal India, SBI and Bharti Airtel among index losers.

ETMarkets also reported India VIX up more than 7% and above 15 at the time of its update. That is a snapshot of the volatility index, not a measure of the eventual session outcome.

What explanations were reported for the reversal?

ETMarkets cited several possible pressures: rising bond yields, continued foreign institutional investor (FII) selling, escalation in the Middle East conflict, weak Asian market cues and profit-taking after the previous week’s gains. These are contemporaneous explanations, not proof that any one factor caused the fall.

ETMarkets quoted V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, saying external headwinds were dominating domestic tailwinds. He pointed to elevated crude prices and US yields as potential sentiment pressures, while saying domestic institutional investors were absorbing foreign selling. These are his assessments, not assured forecasts.

Rank #2

ETMarkets reported net foreign equity selling of ₹45,125 crore in the first six sessions of October 2026. The figure is attributed to that report and is not independently verified here against original exchange or depository data.

Why were banks under pressure?

Upstox reported that banking shares traded lower after an RBI measure raised the daily cash reserve ratio (CRR) maintenance requirement to 99% from 90%, effective October 16, 2026. The report also cited liquidity measures and bond issuance as context. That reporting does not establish the policy as the sole cause of the broader market decline.

How to read these market updates

  • Keep the timestamp with the figure. The 12:10 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. readings describe different points in a moving session.
  • Separate intraday levels from the close. A reported low or midday quote cannot establish the final closing value.
  • Distinguish market movement from its interpretation. Index and stock prices are reported observations; explanations such as foreign selling, yields or profit-taking are attributed analysis.
