On macOS, the emoji picker is part of Character Viewer, Apple’s panel for emoji, symbols, accented letters and characters from other languages. If Control–Command–Space does nothing, first try Edit > Emoji & Symbols in the active app, then test another text field. Apple also documents Fn–E (or Globe–E on keyboards with that key) and a menu-bar Input menu as alternative access routes.
A shortcut that fails in one application is not proof that Character Viewer is broken throughout macOS. Apple notes that keyboard shortcuts can vary by app, and the panel needs a suitable text-entry context to insert a character.
What the “emoji picker” is called on a Mac
Apple’s system name for the emoji picker is Character Viewer. It is the interface used to search for and insert emoji, symbols, accented letters, characters from other languages and more. “Emoji picker,” “Emoji & Symbols” and “Character Viewer” therefore refer to the same built-in feature, viewed through different access points.
The panel is designed to insert a character into the currently focused text-entry location. That means an access method can appear to do nothing when the active window has no editable field, when focus is elsewhere, or when an individual application handles the command differently.

Use this order when the picker will not open
Work through the routes in order. Each test answers a different question: whether the keyboard shortcut is recognized, whether the application exposes Character Viewer, whether the keyboard’s function key is configured for it, and whether the menu-bar route is available independently of the shortcut.
- Click in a text-entry field. Use a document, message, note or another field where you can type.
- Press Control–Command–Space. Apple lists this as the standard shortcut for opening the character panel.
- If nothing appears, choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols. This tests Character Viewer through the application menu instead of the keyboard chord.
- Try another app or another text field. A result that differs between apps points to an app-specific or context-specific problem rather than establishing a system-wide failure.
- Try Fn–E or Globe–E. Which key is available depends on the keyboard, and the Fn/Globe action must be configured appropriately.
- Enable the Input menu. This adds a menu-bar route for opening Character Viewer and gives you a fallback while you investigate the shortcut.
1. Check the standard keyboard shortcut
Put the keyboard focus in an editable field
Before judging the shortcut, click inside a field that accepts text. A blank desktop, a toolbar, a search result that is not active, or a control that accepts only commands is not a useful test. Character Viewer’s purpose is to insert a character at the insertion point, so the insertion point must be active.
Press Control–Command–Space
Hold Control and Command, then press the space bar. Apple identifies Control–Command–Space as the Mac shortcut for opening Character Viewer. If the panel opens, search for an emoji or symbol and select it to insert it at the cursor.

If the command produces no visible panel, do not conclude immediately that the feature is unavailable. Continue with the menu test below; the comparison separates a shortcut problem from a Character Viewer or application problem.

2. Open Character Viewer from the app menu
Use Edit > Emoji & Symbols
With the target app active and a text field selected, open the menu bar’s Edit menu and choose Emoji & Symbols. This is the direct, documented fallback when the keyboard chord is not working.
If the command opens Character Viewer, the panel itself is accessible and the keyboard shortcut is the part that needs investigation. You can use this menu route whenever you need the picker, even while deciding whether to change a key setting.
What it means if the command is missing or unavailable
The menu command is provided by the active application. An app that has no suitable text-entry context may not expose the command in a usable way, or it may not be able to insert the selected character. Switch to a known editable field in another app and check the Edit menu there.
Do not treat a missing command in one app as evidence that macOS has lost Character Viewer. Apple specifically cautions that shortcut behavior can vary by app, so the same test must be repeated in another text-entry context before you describe the issue as system-wide.

3. Compare behavior in another app
This is the most useful diagnostic branch because it avoids guessing at an undocumented cause. Keep the same sequence—focus a text field, press the standard shortcut, then inspect Edit > Emoji & Symbols—in a second application.
| Result | What the result establishes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Shortcut and menu work in another app | The first app or its text field handles the route differently; this does not demonstrate a Mac-wide failure. | Use the working app as a comparison and continue using the menu route in the affected app if it is available. |
| Menu works but the shortcut fails in several apps | Character Viewer is reachable, while the keyboard shortcut route is the failing route. | Check the Fn/Globe setting and use the Input menu as an alternative. |
| Neither shortcut nor menu works in a focused text field | The documented access routes tested so far are not opening the panel in that context. | Try the Fn/Globe route, enable the Input menu, and record the macOS version, keyboard and app before assigning a cause. |
| The panel opens but insertion does not occur | Opening Character Viewer and inserting a character are separate steps; focus or app support may be the limiting factor. | Return focus to a text-entry field and test in another app. |
The table describes what each observation tells you; it does not identify a universal underlying fault. Apple’s documentation covers supported access methods and app-dependent shortcut behavior, not a single cause shared by every failed launch.
4. Check the Fn or Globe key action
Inspect the configured action
Some keyboards offer a function key or a Globe key as a shortcut route. Apple’s current guide describes configuring that key in Keyboard settings. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard, then inspect the setting labeled Press fn key to or Press Globe key to, depending on the hardware and macOS version.
Select “Show Emoji & Symbols” when available
If the setting offers Show Emoji & Symbols, select it when you want the Fn or Globe key to open Character Viewer. Then focus a text field and press the configured key. Apple also lists Fn–E as a shortcut; on keyboards with a Globe key, the current guide documents Fn/Globe–E.

- Broad Compatibility: Able to work with Apple and compatible with Windows PC operating systems
- Full Sized Extended Keyboard: Easy access to media with 20 Apple shortcut keys (cut/copy/paste, iTunes control, Volume up/down, etc.) and multimedia shortcuts for Windows PC. Also, contains a ten-key numeric keypad for easy data entry.
- Plug and Play (No Drivers Required): No need to continually change or recharge batteries of wireless keyboards
- Long Cord: 4'7" (140 cm) USB cable to connect your external keyboard to the computer
Labels and available choices can shift between macOS releases and keyboard types. If you do not see the named option, use the standard Control–Command–Space shortcut, the Edit menu, or the Input menu rather than assuming that the keyboard is defective.
5. Turn on the Input menu for a menu-bar fallback
Enable the menu
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- In the Text Input area, choose Edit.
- Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar.
Open Character Viewer from the menu bar
After the Input menu is visible, open it from the menu bar and choose the Character Viewer command. This route avoids relying on the Control–Command–Space chord and can remain available while you investigate the keyboard or the affected app.
The Input menu is an access method, not a repair or reset. If it opens the panel, you have confirmed that Character Viewer is available through a menu-bar route even if one keyboard shortcut still fails.

How to interpret the common failure patterns
“Control-Command-Space does nothing”
First check that an editable field is focused, then try Edit > Emoji & Symbols. If the menu opens the panel, use it as the immediate workaround and inspect the Fn/Globe configuration. If the shortcut fails only in one app, treat that as an app-specific observation; Apple says shortcuts may vary by app.

“Emoji & Symbols” is not useful in one window
Move the insertion point to a text field and repeat the command. Character Viewer is intended to insert characters, so a window without a suitable text-entry context may not accept the command or the selected character. A second app provides a control test.
The Fn or Globe key does not open the picker
Check System Settings > Keyboard and the Press fn key to or Press Globe key to menu. The key may be assigned to another action, or the relevant choice may not be offered for that keyboard. Use Control–Command–Space, the Edit menu or the Input menu if you need Character Viewer immediately.
The picker opens, but the character is not inserted
Opening and inserting are separate operations. Click back into the intended text field, confirm that the insertion point is visible, open Character Viewer again and select a character. If insertion succeeds in another app, the difference is evidence about the original app or field, not proof of a damaged macOS component.
Supported access routes compared
| Route | How to use it | Needs a focused text field? | Depends on a configurable key? | Best diagnostic use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard shortcut | Control–Command–Space | Yes, for meaningful insertion testing | No | Fastest first check |
| App menu | Edit > Emoji & Symbols | Yes, for insertion | No | Checks access without the keyboard chord |
| Fn or Globe key | Fn–E or Globe–E, where documented and available | Yes, for insertion | Yes; inspect the Keyboard setting | Useful when the keyboard is configured for Character Viewer |
| Input menu | Enable Show Input menu in menu bar, then open Character Viewer from that menu | Yes, for insertion | No | Menu-bar fallback while shortcut behavior is investigated |
Apple does not publish comparative reliability data for these routes. Choose the route that works in the application and text field you actually use; a route that succeeds in one app does not guarantee identical behavior in every other app.
What not to assume—and what information to record
The documented material establishes access methods, the configurable Fn/Globe action and app-dependent shortcut behavior. It does not establish a universal reason for a failed picker, a corrupted system process, or a guaranteed reset procedure. Avoid deleting preference files, promising that a reset will repair every case, or recommending a replacement keyboard solely because the picker did not open.
If the supported routes still fail, record the details that distinguish one case from another:
- The macOS version shown on the Mac.
- The keyboard type and whether it has an Fn key, a Globe key or neither.
- The exact application and text field used for testing.
- Which routes were tried: Control–Command–Space, Edit > Emoji & Symbols, Fn/Globe, and the Input menu.
- Whether the panel failed to open, opened without inserting, or worked in another app.
Those observations let support staff investigate a specific app, keyboard configuration or text-entry context without claiming a cause that Apple’s user documentation does not establish.
