Homelab builders keep adapting IKEA’s LACK side table because its roughly 21.6-inch square top happens to accommodate the width convention used by 19-inch rack equipment—and the table is inexpensive. It is ordinary furniture, not a server rack: IKEA’s U.S. listing showed it at $16.99 when checked, and the company rates its tabletop for a maximum load of 22 lb.
What the $17 IKEA table actually is
The product is IKEA’s white LACK side table, article number 304.499.08. IKEA’s U.S. product page listed it for $16.99 when checked; that is an observed U.S. price, not a guaranteed price for other countries or a permanent price. The table measures 21 5/8 × 21 5/8 inches across and stands 17 3/4 inches high. IKEA’s product listing
IKEA describes the tabletop as particleboard with a honeycomb-structure paper filling made from 100% recycled paper, along with fiberboard, acrylic paint and plastic edging. The company also characterizes the table as lightweight and easy to assemble. Those details describe a low-cost piece of furniture; they do not certify it for rack loads.

Why its dimensions appeal to homelab builders
Rack equipment commonly follows a 19-inch width convention. How-To Geek’s Sydney Butler explains that the 19-inch measurement refers to the front panel and mounting ears, while the equipment body occupies the space between supports. That helps explain why a table top a little over 21 inches wide can look useful as a base for some equipment. Butler writes: “As far as I know, IKEA didn’t set out to make a $17 disposable table that just happens to have the same dimensions used for 19-inch server racks like the one you see above.” The important point is the coincidence: this is a side table that owners adapt, not a server-rack product IKEA says it designed for homelabs.
How owners use it—and what those examples prove
Community posts show individual builders using LACK furniture in homelab setups. One owner describes reinforcing the table’s posts and adding support. These examples explain why the table keeps appearing in discussions, but they are owner reports, not controlled tests. There is no cited adoption or sales statistic showing how many NAS owners or homelabbers buy one. The available examples support a narrower conclusion: some enthusiasts find the dimensions and low price attractive enough to experiment with.
The load limit is the main safety distinction
IKEA lists a maximum load of 22 lb for the tabletop. That figure applies to the table as described on IKEA’s product page. It is not a tested rating for modified construction, equipment spanning between the legs, concentrated loads, or a stack of rack components. The available sources do not establish a safe load for a DIY LACK rack build.

Before placing equipment on any adapted furniture, account for the actual weight and how it is distributed, the stability of the whole setup, and access to ventilation and connections. Do not treat an online build or a tabletop load figure as a structural guarantee for a different configuration.

The LACK may appeal if you want an inexpensive furniture base for a small, light setup and are comfortable evaluating fit and stability yourself. Its size is a convenient starting point, not proof of compatibility.
- Consider it for: a low-cost DIY project where the equipment fits the available surface and you can keep the setup stable and accessible.
- Do not assume: it meets a server-rack standard, accepts rack mounting hardware, or safely supports equipment between its legs.
- Choose a purpose-built rack or another support instead: if the equipment is heavy, must be secured in rack rails, or needs a known capacity beyond IKEA’s tabletop limit.
For any alternative, compare usable width and depth, a published load rating, ventilation and access, stability with the real equipment weight, modification effort, and total cost. Those checks matter more than the superficial similarity between the tabletop and rack equipment width.
