The GameCube controller’s lasting appeal comes from a distinctive layout Nintendo designed around a prominent A button, plus its continued use in Super Smash Bros. and support for some Nintendo Switch software. Those facts help explain why many players feel attached to it; they do not establish that it is more comfortable or better for everyone.
What makes the layout distinctive?
Nintendo described the controller as the link between a player and a game character, and said its design aimed to make that connection feel comfortable. That is Nintendo’s design rationale, not the result of a comparative ergonomic study. The controller has two grips, a main analog stick, a separate C Stick, analog shoulder triggers and built-in vibration. Nintendo’s GameCube controller specifications describe these design choices, while its control diagram identifies the C Stick.
The most recognizable feature is the large A button, with smaller face buttons clustered around it. Nintendo said it made A the “home position” so the buttons’ roles would be easier to understand. One reasonable interpretation is that the prominent button gives the hand a clear reference point, while the surrounding buttons and separate C Stick make the arrangement easy to recognize. The cited sources do not establish that this improves speed, accuracy or comfort for every player.

Why do players connect it with Super Smash Bros.?
The controller’s staying power is closely tied to Super Smash Bros. Nintendo said support for four controller types—including the GameCube controller—was planned from the beginning of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. That continuity helps explain why players who prefer the GameCube layout have been able to keep using it across more than one console generation. It is evidence of support, not proof that most players choose it.

That association can become part of the appeal: a familiar controller may feel like the natural choice for someone who has played the series with it. But that is a matter of player preference. Nintendo’s record of planned support does not measure how many players share it.
What does Nintendo’s own view of the controller say?
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president at the time, offered a striking personal assessment: “I personally felt that the Nintendo GameCube controller was the culmination of all controllers that had come before it, and that it couldn’t be improved via the traditional concept of simply adding to it.” The remark captures how highly the design was regarded inside Nintendo, though it remains Iwata’s opinion rather than an objective ranking.

Taken together, the controller’s particular arrangement, analog inputs and built-in vibration give it a strong identity. Its continued place in Super Smash Bros. helps preserve that identity for players who value its feel or familiarity.
Can you use a GameCube controller with Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo documents GameCube controller use with Nintendo Switch for supported software. Compatibility depends on the particular game and connection setup, so do not assume the controller works with every Switch title. Nintendo also says vibration is available only in supported software, giving Super Smash Bros. as an example. Check Nintendo’s Switch connection instructions and the game’s compatibility information before setting it up.
