On the unfolded Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, One UI 9.0’s taskbar can compete with the very same bottom-edge swipe used for gesture navigation. If the taskbar is hidden, swiping up to summon it may instead send you Home, open Recents, or do both in quick succession. The result is an interaction that feels unreliable precisely when you are trying to launch a second app.

What is going wrong

The Fold’s taskbar is designed as an on-demand dock. When it is hidden, you reveal it with an upward swipe from the bottom edge, then tap an app icon or drag one into split screen. One UI’s gesture navigation assigns that edge to other commands: a short swipe goes Home, while a swipe up and hold opens the recent-apps view on One UI 6.1 and later.

Those commands are difficult to separate when the taskbar is summoned from the same narrow gesture zone. SamMobile senior editor Mihai Matei described Samsung’s implementation this way: “In my opinion, Samsung’s implementation of the One UI 9.0 taskbar on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is abysmal.” The criticism is about the interaction design, not a measured failure rate; no independent usage statistics establish how often the conflict occurs.

When the conflict appears

Hidden taskbar plus gesture navigation

This is the least predictable combination. A swipe intended to reveal the dock can minimize the current app, expose Recents, or reveal the taskbar only after the navigation action has already happened. Small differences in where you start, how far you move, and whether you pause can change the result.

Taskbar left visible

Keeping the taskbar on screen removes the summon gesture from the equation. You give up some lower-edge workspace, but app switching and split-screen launching become more direct because the dock is already available.

Three-button navigation

With navigation buttons enabled, Home and Recents use fixed controls rather than the same bottom-edge swipe used to reveal a hidden taskbar. This generally makes the two functions easier to distinguish, at the cost of a more traditional navigation bar and less unobstructed space.

True full-screen apps

Games, video players, and other apps that hide Android’s system UI can behave differently. Android may reveal system bars in stages: the first edge gesture can bring back system UI, while a later gesture performs navigation or exposes the taskbar. That staged behavior can make the Fold seem inconsistent even when the setting has not changed.

  1. Open Settings while the Fold is open.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Choose Navigation bar.
  4. Under navigation mode, select Buttons for three-button navigation, or select Swipe gestures to keep gesture navigation.
  5. In the taskbar controls on that screen, choose whether the taskbar stays visible. If you keep gestures, leaving the taskbar visible is the simplest way to avoid the hidden-dock swipe conflict.

Samsung’s support documentation also notes Fold-specific positioning limits when Taskbar is enabled, so the dock may not offer every placement option available on a conventional Galaxy phone.

Hide or reveal the taskbar without changing navigation mode

If you prefer gestures but want the dock out of the way most of the time, Samsung Community’s quick tip uses a press-and-hold rather than a swipe:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the taskbar to hide it.
  2. To bring it back, touch and hold the bottom edge of the unfolded display.

This method preserves gesture navigation while avoiding a quick upward swipe, although a press-and-hold still requires more deliberate timing than tapping a permanently visible dock.

Which setup makes sense?

  • Choose a visible taskbar with gestures if you switch apps frequently and want the cleanest possible separation between multitasking and Home.
  • Choose three-button navigation if you want the taskbar hidden until needed but do not want to manage competing edge gestures.
  • Keep the taskbar hidden with gestures only if reclaiming every bit of screen space matters more to you than consistently predictable one-handed navigation.
  • Expect different results in full-screen apps because Android may need one gesture to restore system UI before another gesture is interpreted as navigation.

Why this matters on a foldable

The taskbar is one of the Fold’s most useful multitasking features: the unfolded display has room for a second app, and the dock provides a fast way to start it. That benefit depends on reliable access. Samsung’s design places an on-demand multitasking command and two high-frequency navigation commands at the same edge, forcing users to choose between a cleaner display and more predictable behavior.

The practical workaround is straightforward: keep the taskbar visible, switch to buttons, or use the documented press-and-hold method. None changes the underlying gesture assignment, but each removes the ambiguity that makes the hidden-taskbar experience frustrating.
