The Atacama Desert is exceptionally valuable for astronomy because several favorable conditions occur together: very dry air, high elevation, frequent clear observing conditions, naturally dark skies, and distance from major sources of artificial light and radio interference. Those advantages are especially important for facilities such as ALMA on the Chajnantor plateau, where atmospheric water vapor can otherwise absorb millimeter and submillimeter radiation. Optical and infrared observatories at Paranal and Cerro Armazones benefit from the desert too, but they are judged by additional factors such as seeing, turbulence, cloud cover and operations. The Atacama is not one uniform observing site; its value comes from matching a particular location to a particular wavelength and scientific goal.
The short answer: the Atacama removes several atmospheric problems at once
Every ground-based telescope looks through Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere can absorb incoming radiation, blur images as moving layers of air bend light, scatter artificial light across the sky and introduce radio-frequency interference. A good observatory site minimizes as many of those effects as possible.
The Atacama Desert does that unusually well. Its interior is among the driest places on Earth, its observatory sites sit at substantial elevations, and its remote location keeps city lights and much human-generated radio noise at a distance. The result is not simply a spectacularly clear view for visitors. It is a more transparent, darker and often steadier observing environment for professional instruments.
Different facilities optimize different parts of that environment. ALMA’s antennas operate on the high Chajnantor plateau for millimeter and submillimeter astronomy, where tiny amounts of water vapor matter enormously. ESO’s optical and infrared facilities at Paranal and the nearby Cerro Armazones site also need dark skies and dry air, but they must be evaluated for image sharpness, atmospheric turbulence, cloud statistics, infrared performance and practical operations.

Why dry air is crucial, especially for ALMA
Water vapor acts as an atmospheric absorber
Water vapor does more than produce visible clouds. Molecules of water in the atmosphere absorb radiation at important millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. Those wavelengths carry information about cold gas, dust and molecules in astronomical objects, but the signal can be weakened before it reaches a telescope on the ground.
For this kind of astronomy, the amount of water above the antennas is commonly described as precipitable water vapor (PWV): the depth of liquid water that would result if all the water vapor in a vertical column of atmosphere were condensed. Lower PWV means a more transparent atmospheric window. That is why ALMA is placed on Chajnantor rather than at a lower, wetter location.
ALMA’s measured dryness
The ALMA Science Portal at ESO reports that PWV at the ALMA site is below 1 millimeter more than 50% of the time between April and December. During the five best months, May through September, it is below 0.5 millimeter for more than 25% of the time. Those are site statistics presented by ALMA; the page supplying them does not state a publication year.

They nevertheless show why Chajnantor is so useful: the atmosphere is dry enough often enough to make sensitive observations at frequencies that would be difficult or impossible from many other ground locations.
Dryness also helps infrared observations
Infrared astronomy has its own sensitivity to atmospheric water vapor. Water molecules emit and absorb infrared radiation, adding a changing background that can hide faint sources. A high, arid site reduces that burden and makes more infrared observing time productive. The exact advantage depends on the wavelength, instrument and weather, so a site selected for optical work is not automatically the best site for every infrared or radio band.
High elevation leaves less atmosphere above the telescope
Altitude helps in two related ways. First, a telescope at a high site looks through a shorter atmospheric column than an instrument at sea level. There is less absorbing gas and less water vapor above it. Second, the highest parts of a mountain can sit above some of the lower, denser and more turbulent air that affects observations.

Chajnantor and the ALMA operations site
ALMA’s antenna operations site is approximately 5,000 meters above sea level. ESO describes the facility’s elevations as ranging from 4,576 to 5,044 meters, with most of the array above 5,000 meters. The array’s support facility is approximately 2,900 meters above sea level, allowing staff and equipment to be based at a lower altitude while the antennas operate in the exceptionally dry high plateau.
The separation matters operationally. The scientific instruments need the best atmospheric conditions, while people, maintenance and logistics benefit from a lower base. High altitude is therefore an observing advantage but also an engineering and human-factors challenge; it does not make the entire facility equally high or equally dry.
Optical and infrared sites are high, but lower than Chajnantor
ESO lists Paranal at 2,635.43 meters and Cerro Armazones at 3,046 meters. Those elevations still reduce the atmospheric burden compared with lowland locations, while the sites’ optical performance depends on additional properties such as turbulence and image seeing.
| Location | Elevation reported by the observatory source | Primary observing context |
|---|---|---|
| ALMA antenna operations site, Chajnantor | Approximately 5,000 m; ESO gives a facility range of 4,576–5,044 m | Millimeter and submillimeter astronomy |
| ALMA support facility | Approximately 2,900 m | Operations and support for the high array site |
| Paranal | 2,635.43 m | Optical and infrared observatory operations |
| Cerro Armazones | 3,046 m | Optical and infrared site selected using a broad set of atmospheric and operational criteria |
Elevation should therefore be read as one component of site quality, not as a ranking in which the highest mountain automatically wins.
Dark skies improve optical observations
Remoteness limits artificial light
Optical telescopes detect faint visible and near-infrared light. Light from towns, roads and industrial facilities scatters through the atmosphere and raises the brightness of the background sky. A darker background makes it easier to detect faint galaxies, nebulae, stars and transient events and improves the contrast of long exposures.

The Atacama’s sparse population and distance from major urban centers reduce that problem. ESO describes the skies over its Chilean sites this way: “The skies over the ESO sites in Chile are so dark that on a clear moonless night it is possible to see your shadow cast by the light of the Milky Way alone.” That statement refers to clear, moonless conditions at the ESO sites, not to every night or every location in the entire desert.

Radio quiet is a separate advantage
Radio telescopes do not need darkness in the visible sense, but they are vulnerable to human-made radio transmissions. Communications equipment, radar, satellites and other electronics can overwhelm weak astronomical signals. Remote desert locations reduce the density of nearby transmitters and make radio-frequency protection more practical.
ALMA’s official description identifies “scant clouds and scarce radio interference and light pollution from cities” alongside dryness and altitude as reasons the desert is a premier astronomical location. Radio quiet and optical darkness overlap geographically because remoteness helps both, but they are different technical requirements.
Clear weather helps, but “clear” is not the whole story
A telescope can work only when its observing conditions meet the instrument’s requirements. Fewer clouds generally mean more usable time, yet a cloud-free night can still produce poor data if turbulence blurs images, water vapor is too high for the target wavelength or wind and temperature gradients disturb the telescope.
Seeing and atmospheric turbulence
Seeing describes the blurring caused by turbulent air. For optical astronomy, a site with excellent seeing can deliver sharper images even when two locations have similar cloud cover and altitude. Turbulence can vary with terrain, time of night, wind and the height of different atmospheric layers.
ESO’s assessment of Cerro Armazones explicitly includes seeing and atmospheric turbulence among its site-selection factors. That is why an observatory cannot choose a site using dryness alone. A high desert plateau may be ideal for one wavelength while a nearby mountain summit offers better image steadiness for another instrument.
Infrared transparency and cloud statistics
Armazones’ evaluation also considers infrared properties and precipitable water vapor, as well as the frequency of clear nights. These criteria show how site testing works in practice: astronomers measure the specific atmospheric behavior that affects the proposed instruments, rather than awarding a location a single universal “best” score.

How the main Atacama observatory environments differ
The phrase “Atacama astronomy” covers several sites and scientific programs. Treating them as interchangeable hides the reason each location was chosen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

| ALMA on Chajnantor | Very high, exceptionally dry location for millimeter and submillimeter observations; low water vapor improves atmospheric transmission | PWV, phase stability, weather, antenna operations and the effects of high-altitude logistics |
| Paranal | High, remote and dark site for optical and infrared observations | Seeing, turbulence, cloud cover, infrared background and operational conditions |
| Cerro Armazones | High desert site assessed for optical and infrared performance and its relationship to nearby facilities | Clear nights, infrared properties, PWV, seeing, turbulence and operational synergy |
ALMA therefore answers the question “Why put a millimeter array in the Atacama?” with a particularly strong emphasis on water vapor and altitude. Paranal and Armazones answer a related but broader question about optical and infrared site quality.

A rare combination is more valuable than a single record
Many places have one attractive astronomical property. A high mountain may have a thin atmosphere but poor access or frequent cloud. A remote area may be dark but too humid for important radio bands. A dry site may still suffer from turbulence or nearby radio interference.
The Atacama combines several advantages over large areas: aridity, elevation, relatively frequent clear conditions, low population density and geographic separation from city light and radio sources. That combination supports multiple observatories with different instruments and lets facilities share regional infrastructure and technical expertise.
Operational synergy influences site decisions
ESO lists operational synergy with nearby facilities as one of the criteria used in the Armazones selection. A site is not judged only by atmospheric measurements. Roads, power, communications, maintenance access, staff support and the ability to coordinate with existing observatories all affect whether a scientifically excellent mountain can function as a long-term facility.

What the Atacama does not guarantee
- Uniform conditions: The desert is geographically large. Elevation, cloud, turbulence, water vapor and wind differ from one observatory site to another.
- Perfect seeing: Dry air does not eliminate atmospheric turbulence. Optical image sharpness must be measured separately.
- Cloud-free observing every night: Official descriptions support favorable conditions, but they do not establish one universal annual clear-night count for the whole desert.
- Freedom from all light or radio pollution: Remoteness reduces interference; it does not make human activity irrelevant. Protection and continued monitoring remain necessary.
- Suitability for every wavelength: Chajnantor’s exceptional PWV is especially valuable for millimeter and submillimeter work. Another site may offer better performance for a particular optical, infrared or radio instrument.
- Easy human access: The altitude that benefits observations creates demanding conditions for staff, maintenance and equipment, which is why support arrangements are part of observatory design.
Why site protection matters over decades
Observatories are built for long scientific lifetimes, so the conditions that justified construction must be preserved. New lighting can brighten the optical sky. New transmitters can reduce radio quiet. Changes in atmospheric moisture or cloud behavior can affect the wavelengths that depend most strongly on exceptionally dry air.
ESO’s climate discussion emphasizes that dry conditions are particularly important for millimeter radio astronomy. That makes long-term environmental monitoring more than a conservation exercise: it protects the transmission conditions that allow facilities such as ALMA to observe the cold universe from the ground.
Protection also has to be specific to the facility. Optical observatories need controls on visible and infrared background light and stable seeing. Millimeter arrays need very low water vapor and radio-frequency protection. A regional policy that helps one requirement may not fully address another, so observatory planning continues to rely on measurements at the individual site.
How to interpret the claim that it is “one of the best”
The wording is accurate when it is understood as a statement about a combination of measured advantages, not as a claim that every point in the Atacama is superior to every other astronomical site. The strongest case is for locations where altitude, dryness, darkness, radio quiet, cloud behavior and atmospheric steadiness align with the telescope’s wavelength and design.
For ALMA, the decisive advantage is the unusually dry, high Chajnantor environment. For optical and infrared facilities such as those at Paranal and Armazones, the argument also depends on seeing, turbulence, clear-night frequency, infrared transparency and practical operations. The desert earns its reputation because it offers several high-quality candidate sites close enough to support major observatories, while each facility still makes a site-specific engineering and scientific choice.
A practical checklist for evaluating an observatory site
When comparing any proposed ground-based astronomy location, use the same questions professional site studies ask:
- What wavelength will the telescope observe? Visible, infrared, millimeter and submillimeter instruments are affected by different atmospheric problems.
- How much water vapor is above the instrument? Use PWV statistics appropriate to the site and season, rather than a general description of the climate.
- How high is the observing platform? Record the telescope elevation and distinguish it from a lower support or visitor facility.
- How often are conditions usable? Examine cloud, wind, temperature, humidity and other operational thresholds, not just the number of sunny days.
- How steady is the atmosphere? Seeing and turbulence determine whether an optical telescope can deliver sharp images.
- How dark and radio-quiet is the location? Measure artificial light and radio-frequency interference separately.
- Can the facility operate safely for decades? Access, power, communications, maintenance, staff support and environmental protection are part of the scientific calculation.
The Atacama scores strongly across this checklist, but the weighting changes with the instrument. That is the precise reason it is one of the world’s best astronomy regions rather than a place with one magical property.
