Google does not currently document an Add to calendar button inside AI Overviews. AI Overviews are Search responses that provide links to web pages, while calendar creation is documented as a separate action in Gemini Apps, Gmail, and Google Assistant on supported smart displays. If you cannot find the option, first identify which Google product and screen you are using; instructions for one surface do not diagnose another.
What Google AI Overviews are—and what they are not
AI Overviews appear at the top of some Google Search results when Google’s systems decide that an AI-generated explanation will help. Google describes them as a way to summarize information and provide prominent links for exploring the web. Its Search documentation covers follow-up questions, links and transitions into AI Mode, but it does not describe creating a calendar event from an Overview.
That distinction matters because the phrase “Add to calendar” is used for other Google products. A button that appears in Gmail, or an event action offered by Gemini, should not be assumed to be part of Search. Google’s May 20, 2025 announcement said AI Overviews had expanded to more than 200 countries and territories and over 40 languages. That rollout figure describes Search availability, not the availability of calendar actions in every account or region.
Google Vice President of Product Management for Search Hema Budaraju described the feature this way: “They’ll appear in Search when our systems determine they’ll be most helpful, featuring prominent web links so people can easily learn more.” The statement emphasizes web links rather than an event-creation control.

Identify the Google surface before troubleshooting
Look at the app name, address bar and surrounding controls. The same event information can be handled differently depending on where you found it.

If the missing control is in Gmail, Gemini or an Assistant device, an AI Overview explanation cannot fix it. Continue with the section that matches the screen you actually have open.
If the option is missing from a Search AI Overview
There is no documented Search setting that reveals a hidden calendar button. Google’s available AI Overview materials do not say that the control was removed, disabled or moved behind a particular preference. The safest interpretation is that the Overview is not a calendar-entry interface in the first place.
Use the cited event source
- Expand the AI Overview’s links and open the page that contains the event details.
- Look on that site for its own calendar export, registration or event-download option.
- If the page provides a date, time and location but no export, copy those details into Google Calendar manually.
Check the event’s time zone, recurrence and location before saving. AI-generated summaries can omit details that are present on the linked page, so treat the source page as the authority.
Enter the event directly in Calendar
Open Google Calendar, choose Create or the plus button, and enter the title, date, start and end times, time zone, location and any notes. This is a separate Calendar workflow and does not depend on whether an AI Overview appeared in Search.

Ask Gemini instead of Search
If you want an AI-assisted entry, start a conversation in Gemini Apps and use the documented calendar workflow described below. Do not paste sensitive information into a public Search query merely to obtain a calendar entry.
How to create the event with Gemini Apps
Gemini Apps has a documented action for adding an event, but it requires account setup that AI Overviews do not. Google’s Gemini Apps Help says you can include “Add this to my calendar” or “@Google Calendar add this event” in your prompt.

- Sign in to Gemini Apps with the Google account whose calendar should receive the event.
- In Gemini settings, make sure Keep Activity is enabled. Google lists this as a requirement for the calendar action.
- For Google Calendar access, connect Google Workspace in Gemini. A Workspace connection is the documented path for allowing Gemini to work with Google Calendar.
- Confirm that the account has a usable default calendar and that you are not signed into a different personal or work account in another browser tab.
Names and placement of settings can change as Google updates Gemini. If a Workspace connection is unavailable for your account, your organization may restrict the integration; the available documentation does not provide a universal administrator override.
Write an unambiguous prompt
Include the event title, date, start time, end time or duration, time zone and location. For example: Add this to my calendar: dentist appointment on March 14, 2027, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time at 10 Main Street. You can also invoke the service explicitly: @Google Calendar add this event: project review, April 2, 9:30–10:30 a.m. Pacific Time.
Google says the event is added to the default calendar unless you specify another calendar. Review Gemini’s confirmation carefully, especially when the prompt contains a date without a year or a time-zone abbreviation that could be interpreted differently.

Confirm or undo the result
After creation, Gemini provides an undo notification or an event link according to Google’s instructions. Open the link and verify the saved details in Calendar. If the event is wrong, use the notification’s undo action promptly or edit it in Calendar rather than creating a duplicate.

- Gemini Apps cannot add guests or send invitations for you.
- Some fields, including location or description, cannot be edited in an existing event through the documented Gemini action. Edit those fields directly in Google Calendar.
- A successful chat response is not by itself proof that the event was saved. Use the event link or Calendar view to verify it.
When Gmail should show Add to calendar
Gmail has its own event-detection feature. Google says an Add to calendar button appears above an email when Gmail detects event information in the message. The trigger is the message content, not an AI Overview.
Check the message itself
- Open the email in Gmail, not a Search result or a notification preview.
- Read the top of the message for the Add to calendar button or an event-information banner.
- If it appears, select it, review the proposed title, date, time and time zone, then save the event.
Detection is not guaranteed for every message. An informal email, an image-only invitation, missing year, ambiguous time zone or details spread across several messages may not provide enough structured information for Gmail to offer the button.
Consider Gmail Smart features carefully
A Google Calendar Community Product Expert suggested that a user check Gmail’s Smart features and personalization settings after reporting that the manual add option had disappeared. That community reply is troubleshooting advice, not a Google statement that the setting is the universal cause. You may check those preferences if the button disappeared from messages that previously produced it, but do not treat changing them as a guaranteed fix.
Use Calendar or Gemini in Gmail as alternatives
If Gmail cannot detect the event, create it in Google Calendar manually from the message details. Google’s Workspace Learning Center also documents event creation from a message and says Gemini in Gmail can create events on the primary calendar. These are Gmail and Calendar workflows, separate from Search AI Overviews.

Google Assistant event cards on smart displays
Google documents another calendar surface on supported smart displays: Assistant can present event cards and calendar actions. This is not the same interface as an AI Overview in Search. A missing Assistant action therefore needs to be evaluated against Assistant eligibility and device support.
Google’s help page states that its AI-supported Assistant actions are currently limited to English, the United States and users who are 18 or older. Those limits can explain why a smart-display action is unavailable, but they do not explain a missing button in Search. Verify the device, account country, Assistant language and age eligibility before comparing behavior with another user.
Why a single root cause cannot be diagnosed from the symptom
“The Add to calendar option is missing” describes an outcome, not a product. The same wording can refer to at least four surfaces with different triggers and requirements. Without the app, device, country, account type and exact screen, it is not possible to establish whether the behavior is expected, caused by event-format detection, restricted by an organization or simply being looked for in the wrong product.
- Search: Google’s reviewed documentation does not list a calendar button in AI Overviews.
- Gemini: Sign-in, Keep Activity and Workspace connection affect the documented action.
- Gmail: The button depends on Gmail recognizing event details in a message.
- Assistant: Device and eligibility limits apply, including English, United States and age 18-plus for the cited AI-supported actions.
Do not infer that a feature was removed from one product because it is absent in another. Google’s materials establish neighboring workflows, not a shared feature with one switch controlling all of them.
A practical decision path
- Label the screen. Is it Search, Gmail, Gemini Apps or an Assistant smart display?
- Capture the trigger. Note whether you searched, opened an email, issued a prompt or received an event card.
- Apply the matching requirement. Search has no documented calendar control; Gemini needs the documented account setup; Gmail needs detectable event information; Assistant needs a supported, eligible configuration.
- Use the nearest documented alternative. Open the cited web page, create the event in Calendar, ask Gemini with an explicit prompt or use Gmail’s message action.
- Verify in Google Calendar. Check the destination calendar, time zone, guests, location and description after any automated action.
If the behavior still seems inconsistent, record the exact app version, device, account type, country, language and a description of the screen. Those details are necessary for meaningful support; a statement that an AI Overview lacks a button is not enough to identify an account-specific cause.

What the current evidence does not establish
Google’s official materials do not provide a statistic for how often an Add to calendar control is absent from AI Overviews. They also do not provide a documented explanation for why a particular person might expect that control in Search. Avoid claims that the button is hidden behind a setting, was universally removed, or should appear after clearing cache unless Google documents that behavior for the exact product.
The most reliable conclusion is narrower: AI Overviews are Search responses with links, while calendar creation is documented elsewhere. Choose the workflow that matches the product displaying the event information, and verify the saved event in Calendar.
