The dragon measures 41 cm, but the fictional Rulebook in the Bureau of Imaginary Permits sets a 35 cm limit. The AI clerk says the application is in order; the inspector should stamp DENIED. That mismatch is the central puzzle in Malbolged’s pixel-art permit game: a human must check the paperwork against the current rules, not simply accept an automated approval.

Why the application is denied

In the featured case, the permit is for keeping a small dragon indoors. The submitted dragon measures 41 cm, exceeding the scenario’s 35 cm Rulebook threshold. The clerk’s approval does not change that discrepancy, so the correct decision within the game is DENIED. Both measurements are fictional game details, not real animal-safety standards or legal requirements.

What the inspector is meant to check

The game puts the player at an inspection booth, where the task is to compare the submitted papers with the Rulebook and the day’s bulletin before stamping APPROVED or DENIED. The bulletin matters because Day 2 changes rules overnight, while the AI clerk continues applying the previous day’s rules. The mechanic therefore tests whether the inspector consults current governing information rather than treating the clerk’s memo as conclusive.

How the permit workflow is structured

Malbolged’s October 1, 2026 DEV Community post describes the project as the Bureau of Imaginary Permits, a workflow application presented as a pixel-art inspection game. It uses Sanity Workflows, not a real permit office. The post describes four workflow chains: express-permit, standard-permit, sky-permit, and booth-inspection.

  • Scripted booth cases begin at a human stage and are scored against stored case truth; according to the post, the browser does not submit its own score.

Human officials review cases in a Stamp Desk app inside the Sanity dashboard. The post says that app uses Sanity’s workflow SDK along with live in-tray and session hooks.

Scripted game cases and AI-reviewed applications are different

The authored booth scenarios and the citizen-facing permit flow should not be conflated. The post says the scripted applicant memos are written by the author, rather than generated by AI. In the citizen-facing side, an AI clerk reviews submitted applications and may request an attached form; a second AI handles sky permits. The booth game then asks a human inspector to judge its scripted cases against the rules and bulletin.

What the post reports about AI guardrails

Malbolged describes a failure in which the clerk repeatedly misunderstood a consent answer. The reported fixes included making the clerk quote the answer it was relying on and showing it the requested form’s question. The implementation also moved checks for prerequisite permits and allowable forms into code. According to the post, the system limits returns to two; after that, a file is passed.

These details are the author’s account of the implementation and testing, not independently reproduced results. They illustrate a useful separation in the design: code enforces specific workflow constraints, while the human inspector makes the final decision in the booth scenario.

What this example does—and does not—show

  • It shows why an automated approval can be wrong when its rules are stale or its interpretation misses a relevant document detail.
  • It makes rule freshness part of the human review: the inspector must check the day’s bulletin as well as the standing Rulebook.
  • It is a fictional demonstration of a workflow built with Sanity Workflows, not evidence about an actual permit system, animal regulation, or the performance of AI clerks generally.

The source is Malbolged’s own DEV Community post, published October 1, 2026, for Sanity Challenge Path Two. Its captured article text supports what the author says about the project, but does not independently establish the live demo’s behavior.
