The August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse is called the “eclipse of the century” because it will bring unusually long totality to land, including near Luxor, Egypt. NASA predicts a maximum of 6 minutes 23.2 seconds. The nickname is informal, though: the 2027 eclipse will not have the longest maximum totality of the 21st century.
What makes the 2027 eclipse stand out?
During a total solar eclipse, the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun and completely covers the Sun for observers inside a narrow path. NASA explains the geometry of eclipses in its eclipse overview.
NASA predicts that totality on August 2, 2027 will last as long as 6 minutes 23.2 seconds. That is the greatest duration anywhere along the eclipse path, not a guarantee for every viewer. The prediction’s map calculation does not account for the Moon’s limb topography, as NASA notes on its event prediction page.

That combination—very long totality and a maximum that can be viewed from land—is the main reason the event has attracted the “eclipse of the century” label. It is a media nickname, not an official astronomical ranking, and its original coinage has not been established.

- 2023 ANNULAR AND 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES - On October 14th 2023, an annular eclipse (when the sun forms a ring around the moon) will cross the United States from Oregon to Texas. We will then experience a once-in-a-generation Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024 - the only USA total eclipse until August 23rd, 2044. You will be amazed as the moon completely blocks the sun during Totality, which lasts but mere minutes. Soluna Glasses are what you need to safely view both of these eclipses.
Is it really the longest eclipse of the century?
No, not by maximum duration. The July 22, 2009 total solar eclipse lasted longer at its greatest point: 6 minutes 39 seconds, according to Space.com’s comparison. That maximum occurred over the Pacific, while the 2027 eclipse’s longest totality is available on land near Luxor.
Those are different advantages. The 2009 event had the longer maximum; the 2027 event offers long totality where people can view it from land. Neither measure alone makes one eclipse universally “best.”

How long will totality last at a specific location?
The 6-minute-23.2-second figure is the path-wide maximum. Your actual duration depends on where you stand within the path of totality: locations near its center line experience longer totality, while locations nearer the edges may get only seconds. Being in the right country is not enough to determine your viewing time.
NASA’s path table lists a central-line example with 6 minutes 22.3 seconds of totality. That location-specific figure is distinct from the path-wide maximum. Check a location-specific map or prediction before choosing a viewing spot; timeanddate’s guide to where to go explains how position relative to the center line affects duration.

Where will the 2027 total solar eclipse be visible?
Totality follows a narrow path crossing the southern tip of Spain, northern Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean. NASA lists Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia among the locations in the totality region. Surrounding areas may see a partial eclipse instead. NASA’s eclipse visibility overview distinguishes total and partial visibility, and timeanddate’s 2027 eclipse page provides a route map.

Outside the brief period of totality, looking directly at the Sun requires special-purpose solar filters that comply with ISO 12312-2. NASA’s eclipse safety poster gives direct-viewing guidance. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing the Sun. Follow the filter manufacturer’s instructions and use the proper protection during partial phases.
