Archaeologists cannot prove why Ice Age adults brought toddlers into dangerous caves. A 2025 Tel Aviv University study proposes that children may have been viewed as special mediators between people and supernatural beings, while education, imitation, play and ordinary family participation remain plausible explanations. The physical evidence is clear: children entered deep caves and left marks, but their motive is not.
What archaeologists actually found
The evidence comes from several kinds of traces rather than one definitive scene. Researchers have identified child-sized handprints, footprints and finger flutings in decorated caves. A 2025 announcement from Tel Aviv University’s Ella Assaf, Yafit Kedar and Ran Barkai said children as young as two appear in the cave-art record. About 400 decorated caves are known, mainly in France and Spain, with artwork dated approximately 40,000 to 12,000 years ago.
The team’s paper describes toddlers and children aged two to 12 entering deep, oxygen-depleted, sensory-deprived spaces with older members of their groups. That finding establishes participation and physical access. It does not, by itself, identify a religious purpose.
Why the spiritual explanation is being considered
Assaf, Kedar and Barkai’s 2025 interpretation is that some adults may have associated children with qualities that enabled communication with entities believed to inhabit cave depths. In that model, a child’s presence or mark could have had special ritual significance.

This is a new proposal, not an archaeological consensus. The long-standing alternative is that adults brought children to teach them traditions and allow them to participate in community practices. A single visit could also reflect imitation, play, family movement or a combination of motives. The surviving marks rarely preserve enough context to distinguish among those possibilities.
What the Rouffignac flutings reveal about a 2-year-old
Rouffignac Cave in France contains thousands of “finger flutings,” sometimes called macaronis. A person made one by dragging fingers through a thin clay coating to expose the limestone underneath.

In Dick Stapert’s Cambridge analysis, 46 of 50 measured three-finger flutings—92 percent—were probably made by just two children. One maker was most likely a girl aged two to three. The other could have been a boy aged two to three or a girl aged five to six. The measurements cannot resolve that alternative. Stapert’s methodological warning is explicit: “In principle, there is no way to decide between these two possibilities.”
That uncertainty matters. The flutings demonstrate that very young children could make marks in the cave, but the sample cannot prove whether the activity was a rite, instruction, spontaneous play or another social act. The Cambridge analysis also cautions that ritual meaning cannot be established from the fluting sample alone.

Where the 14,000-year evidence comes from
The approximately 14,000-year-old evidence comes from Grotta della Bàsura in northern Italy, not Rouffignac. A 2019 eLife study examined 180 footprints and other traces left by five people: two adults, an adolescent and children estimated at about three and six years old.
The group traveled at least 400 meters into the cave. They were barefoot, crawled through a low passage and used bunches of wooden sticks to illuminate the route. Bàsura therefore supplies behavioral context: children could accompany adults through a difficult underground journey involving darkness, confined spaces and improvised lighting.

Those tracks do not show that the Bàsura group made Rouffignac’s flutings, nor that the two sites had the same purpose. They show only that young children were capable of being included in hazardous cave trips during the Paleolithic.
How the main explanations compare

What the risks tell us about adult decisions
Deep caves were not easy environments for toddlers. The Tel Aviv University paper emphasizes low oxygen, darkness and severe sensory deprivation. Bàsura adds crawling through a low passage and moving hundreds of meters underground while carrying wooden torches. Bringing a small child therefore appears to have required a deliberate decision, even if the reason varied from one group or cave to another.

That conclusion should still be stated narrowly. The traces show that children were admitted to challenging underground spaces; they do not reveal whether adults carried them, guided them on foot or allowed them to move independently. Nor do they establish that every decorated cave served the same social or spiritual role.
What can and cannot be concluded
- Child participation in Paleolithic cave marking is supported by handprints, footprints and finger flutings, including marks attributed to children around age two.
- Rouffignac provides the strongest numerical example: 46 of 50 measured flutings were probably produced by two children, with one estimated at two to three years old.
- Bàsura provides separate, approximately 14,000-year-old evidence that children about three and six traveled at least 400 meters underground with adults.
- The spiritual-mediator idea comes from the 2025 Tel Aviv University team and remains an interpretation.
- Education, imitation, play and ordinary participation remain compatible with the physical evidence.
Why the distinction between sites matters
It is tempting to combine every child trace into one story, but the chronology and locations are different. Rouffignac is the source of the quantified finger-fluting analysis and the two-to-three-year estimate. Bàsura is the source of the approximately 14,000-year-old footprints, crawling route and wooden lighting evidence. Keeping them separate prevents the stronger claim—that 14,000-year-old handprints prove a spiritual motive—from slipping into the record.
