Chrome usually cannot show tabs from another device for one of four reasons: the devices use different Google Accounts or Chrome profiles, Open Tabs is not included in sync, you are looking in the wrong place, or sync is paused and needs verification. On a computer, open More > History > History > Tabs from other devices. On Android, check Settings > Sync and the separate tab-group setting that controls automatic opening. If the tab was closed, search History instead; Chrome’s help does not promise that every closed tab will remain recoverable through cross-device sync.
What “tabs from other devices” means in Chrome
Chrome can synchronize browsing information between devices that are signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account. Open tabs are one configurable sync category. A tab that is open on a laptop may therefore be listed on a phone or another computer, but only when the account, Chrome profile, and relevant sync setting all line up.
Three different features are easy to confuse:
- Open Tabs sync: keeps the list of currently open tabs available across signed-in devices.
- Tabs from other devices: the computer History view where Chrome displays those synchronized tabs.
- Send to your devices: a one-off sharing command for sending a page to another device. It is not a repair for missing synchronized-tab history.
On Android, Chrome also has a setting for automatically opening tab groups from other devices. Turning that option off can make a synced group fail to open automatically even though synchronization is working.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe most common reasons tabs are missing
The devices are using different accounts or profiles
Chrome cross-device behavior depends on the Google Account signed in to Chrome, not merely on being signed in to a Google website. A computer can have several Chrome profiles, each with its own account and browsing data. Check the active Chrome profile on every device rather than assuming that the account used by the operating system or another Google app is the one Chrome is syncing.

Open Tabs is excluded from sync
Chrome can synchronize selected data types. A general “sync is on” message does not prove that Open Tabs is selected. If that category is disabled on either device, the tab list may not appear even though other items, such as bookmarks, continue to synchronize.
You are checking the wrong screen
On a computer, synchronized tabs are not necessarily shown as a normal History entry. Google’s documented route is More > History > History > Tabs from other devices. On Android, the relevant controls are in Chrome’s sync and tab-group settings, so the computer History route should not be presented as a universal Android menu.
Sync is paused
Chrome may pause synchronization and display a verification or sign-in prompt, including after you have signed out of a Google service. Until that prompt is completed, the device may stop receiving updates from the account.
The tab was closed on the source device
Open Tabs is about tabs that are open, while History records pages that have been visited. Google’s consumer help pages do not provide a universal retention period or guarantee that a tab closed elsewhere will continue to appear under Tabs from other devices. A closed page is worth searching for in History, but sync alone should not be treated as a guaranteed undelete feature.

First checks: confirm the account and Chrome profile
- On the device where the tab is open, open Chrome’s account or profile controls and note the Google Account shown for Chrome.
- Repeat the check on the device where the tab is missing. The account must be the same on both devices.
- If either device has multiple Chrome profiles, switch to the profile that uses the matching account, or open its profile settings and verify the account directly.
- Make sure you are signed in to Chrome itself. Signing in to a Google site in a tab does not by itself enable Chrome sync.
Do this comparison before changing settings. Looking at a different profile can make a correctly synchronized tab set appear to have disappeared.
Verify that Open Tabs is selected for sync
Open Chrome’s sync settings on each device and inspect the individual data categories. The control you need is labeled Open Tabs. Turn it on wherever you want Chrome to exchange the list of open tabs, then leave the account signed in while you check the receiving device.
On Android, Google’s instructions place this control under Settings > Sync. Chrome’s labels can change between releases, so look for the sync page and the Open Tabs item if the wording is not identical. A top-level status saying that synchronization is enabled is not enough; the Open Tabs category must also be included.
Changing this setting does not turn a closed page into an open tab. It controls whether Chrome shares the current open-tab state between devices.

Find synchronized tabs on a computer
- Open Chrome on the computer where you want to see the other device’s tabs.
- Select More, the three-dot menu.
- Choose History, then History again.
- Select Tabs from other devices.
Look for the device name and the tab that is still open there. This is Google’s documented computer path. If the entry is absent, continue with the account, Open Tabs, and paused-sync checks instead of assuming that the tab was permanently deleted.
Check Android’s separate tab-group behavior
Android has two related but distinct controls. Open Tabs determines whether tab information is synchronized. A separate option under Tabs and tab groups controls whether tab groups from other devices open automatically.
If a tab group is synced but does not open by itself
- Confirm the device uses the same Google Account as the source device.
- Open Chrome’s Settings > Sync and confirm Open Tabs is enabled.
- In Chrome settings, open Tabs and tab groups.
- Check the option labeled Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
If automatic opening is disabled, a group may still be saved and synchronized without appearing as soon as Chrome starts. That behavior is different from synchronization being turned off.

On a computer, Google also documents a setting to allow on-device site data when sync repeatedly turns off after Chrome is closed or restarted. If your sync status keeps changing back to paused, follow the prompt first; then review that computer setting in Chrome’s privacy and sync controls. Menu names can vary by Chrome version, so use the wording shown in your installation rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Do not create a second Chrome profile just to bypass a paused status. A new profile can separate your history and tabs from the account that contains the missing data.
Recover a page that may have been closed
If the source device no longer has the tab open, search browsing History on the device where you remember visiting the page. History is the appropriate place to look for a page that was closed; Tabs from other devices is intended for synchronized open tabs.
- Open Chrome’s History on the device that may have visited the page.
- Search or browse for the site’s title or address.
- Open the matching History entry in a new tab.
- If you need it on another device, use Chrome’s Send to your devices command while signed in to the same Google Account.
The official consumer guidance reviewed for this issue does not state that every closed tab will remain in cross-device listings, nor does it specify a universal retention window. Treat History as a possible recovery route, not a promise that Chrome can restore every closed tab.

A complete device-by-device troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so that each check isolates a different failure point.
- Identify the source tab. Confirm which device still has the tab or group open. If no device has it open, move to the History procedure rather than troubleshooting Open Tabs.
- Compare Chrome accounts. Check the account shown in Chrome on both devices and the active profile on computers with more than one profile.
- Confirm Chrome sign-in. Verify that Chrome itself is signed in; a signed-in Google website is not sufficient.
- Inspect the sync category. Open sync settings and make sure Open Tabs is selected. On Android, use Settings > Sync.
- Check the destination view. On a computer use More > History > History > Tabs from other devices. On Android, inspect the synced tabs and tab-group settings instead.
- Complete verification. If Chrome says sync is paused or asks you to verify your identity, follow the sign-in prompt.
- Review Android auto-opening. For a missing group on Android, check Automatically open tab groups from other devices separately from Open Tabs sync.
- Search History. If the tab was closed, look for the page in browsing History and reopen it manually.
- Share it explicitly when needed. Use Send to your devices for a page you want to move immediately; this is a separate sharing action, not a repair to the synchronized list.
Symptoms and the most relevant check
| What you see | Most likely area to check | What it does and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| No devices appear under Tabs from other devices on a computer | Chrome account, active profile, and Open Tabs sync | A missing list does not prove that all tabs were closed or deleted. |
| Bookmarks or other data sync, but open tabs do not | The individual Open Tabs category | Overall sync being enabled does not confirm that every category is enabled. |
| Chrome displays a verification or sign-in request | Paused sync | The device may stop receiving tab updates until the prompt is completed. |
| A tab group is saved but does not open automatically on Android | Automatically open tab groups from other devices | Automatic opening is separate from whether Open Tabs is synchronized. |
| The page was closed on the source device | Browsing History | Google does not promise that a closed tab remains in the cross-device tab list. |
| You want to move one page immediately | Send to your devices | This sends a page once; it is not a substitute for Open Tabs sync. |
Special cases that can make the result look inconsistent
Multiple Chrome profiles on one computer
Each profile can have a different account and separate browsing context. Always open the profile that contains the source or destination tabs. Checking the operating-system account, another browser profile, or a Google website in the wrong profile can lead to a false diagnosis.
Different behavior on computer and Android
The computer History route and Android’s tab-group controls are documented for their respective platforms. Do not expect an Android-only automatic-opening switch to appear as a universal desktop option, and do not use the desktop History path as proof that Android’s tab-group setting is enabled.
Managed ChromeOS devices
Chrome Enterprise and Education documentation describes managed ChromeOS Desk sync with its own policy controls and retention details. Those rules apply to that managed feature. They should not be used as a retention promise for ordinary consumer Chrome tabs.
Changing Chrome versions or menu labels
Chrome can rename or reposition settings. Use the exact labels visible in your installation, but preserve the distinctions that matter: same Chrome account, Open Tabs enabled, correct destination view, and a completed verification prompt when sync is paused.
How to prevent the problem next time
- Keep the same Google Account selected in Chrome on the devices you routinely use together.
- When using multiple profiles, make the profile choice deliberate before opening work or personal tabs.
- Periodically check that Open Tabs remains selected in sync settings.
- On Android, decide whether tab groups should open automatically and set that option independently.
- If Chrome requests verification, complete it instead of dismissing the prompt indefinitely.
- For a page you must deliver immediately, use Send to your devices rather than relying on the tab list to update at the exact moment you need it.
- If a page is important, bookmark it or leave it open until you have confirmed it appears on the destination device; cross-device sync is not documented as a guaranteed recovery system for closed tabs.
What Chrome sync cannot be assumed to do
Chrome’s help material supports checking account identity, the Open Tabs category, the documented computer History location, paused-sync verification, Android tab-group behavior, and History for a page that may have been closed. It does not establish a universal consumer retention period, a guaranteed restoration process for closed tabs, or a recovery percentage. Any troubleshooting advice that promises those outcomes goes beyond the documented behavior.
The practical decision is therefore simple: if the tab is still open, repair the account, profile, sync category, or paused state and look in the correct view; if it was closed, search History and reopen or send the page manually.
