Auto-renewal means a subscription keeps charging your saved payment method unless you cancel it in the way and by the deadline set in the offer. The arrangement is legal in many situations, but the renewal date, price, notice, cancellation route and access after cancellation depend on the service terms and applicable law.

Cancellation becomes difficult when the steps are hidden, require a different channel from enrollment, or continue through a confusing series of screens or calls. If charges continue after you tried to cancel, preserve your evidence, review the next statements, dispute the charges with your card issuer, and report a subscription you never agreed to through the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your state attorney general.

What auto-renewal actually means

Auto-renewal is a common form of a negative-option arrangement. The FTC’s March 2026 explanation describes negative-option marketing as a practice “in which the absence of affirmative consumer action constitutes consent to be charged for goods or services.” In ordinary terms, you accept a recurring offer, use the initial term or promotional period, and are billed again unless you complete cancellation.

The usual billing sequence

  1. You accept an offer that says the service will renew, often after a trial or introductory price.
  2. The initial term runs. Its length might be monthly, annual, or another interval stated in the terms.
  3. Unless cancellation is completed, the service renews according to the disclosed schedule.
  4. The merchant charges the payment method associated with the account.

There is no universal renewal day, notice period, price-change rule, grace period, or cancellation deadline. A promotional price can end at the first renewal, and some services let access continue until the paid period ends while others define a different effective date. Read the offer and the account’s written terms rather than assuming every subscription behaves alike.

Why businesses use it

Recurring billing lowers the transaction cost of paying repeatedly and avoids an interruption when a customer wants uninterrupted service. Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said negative-option subscriptions can provide “procompetitive features to consumers and the marketplace more broadly by lowering transaction costs and ensuring consumers receive uninterrupted service.” The same mechanism also makes inattention financially important: doing nothing can create another charge.

Why cancellation can feel harder than enrollment

The built-in asymmetry

Enrollment is usually a single affirmative decision. Renewal is triggered by inaction, so a customer must remember the date, find the correct account controls, and complete the cancellation process before another charge. The FTC-hosted paper Selling Subscriptions discusses consumer inattention and inertia in subscription markets and cites earlier findings of substantial cancellation lags among health-club members with automatically renewing monthly contracts.

That economic context explains why forgotten subscriptions can continue without proving that every company intentionally obstructs cancellation. A difficult flow may result from poor design, inconsistent systems, or deliberate retention tactics; the facts must be established for the particular service.

Procedural friction people describe

Individual comments submitted to the FTC’s rulemaking record describe searching for a cancellation link, contacting a representative after enrolling online, or spending time on hold. One commenter wrote: “Often a company makes it significantly more difficult to even find out where or how to cancel a subscription.” These are firsthand submissions, not a representative survey, so they illustrate the kinds of obstacles consumers report rather than measuring how common each obstacle is.

Friction can include a cancellation control that is difficult to locate, a route that requires a call even though enrollment was online, repeated confirmation screens, or a confusing final step that leaves the customer unsure whether cancellation succeeded. Keep a record of what you did and what the service displayed.

What the FTC alleged in the Chegg case

In a 2025 enforcement announcement concerning Chegg, the FTC alleged that cancellation links were buried, that users needed multiple clicks to find them, and that people who reached the link still faced confusing steps. The complaint also alleged that some consumers continued to be charged after requesting cancellation. The agency said nearly 200,000 consumers were charged after requesting cancellation since October 2020. That number is an allegation about one company, not an estimate for subscriptions generally.

The announcement described a proposed $7.5 million payment intended to fund refunds to affected consumers. A proposed settlement and allegations are not a finding that every reported event occurred, and they do not establish a typical cancellation experience across the market.

Current U.S. federal status: what changed

The 2024 “click-to-cancel” rule is not an operative blanket mandate

The FTC’s rule history lists an October 2024 final click-to-cancel rule, but the agency’s March 2026 notice says that rule was vacated. Do not treat the 2024 provisions as a current nationwide requirement that every subscription must provide a particular cancellation interface.

What the March 2026 notice does

In March 2026, the FTC began an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM). The notice asks for information about the negative-option marketplace, disclosures, informed consent, practices that keep consumers from understanding terms, cancellation deterrents, and possible regulatory responses. An ANPRM is a request for public comment and part of a rulemaking process; it is not a new final rule and does not itself create a new cancellation procedure.

The FTC said it had received more than 100,000 complaints about negative options and related practices over five years and continues to receive thousands each year. Those are complaints received by the agency, not a prevalence rate for all subscriptions.

ROSCA and other protections

The FTC’s Chegg announcement summarizes the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) as requiring covered online sellers that use negative-option features to clearly disclose material terms, obtain express informed consent before charging, and provide a simple way to stop recurring charges. Whether ROSCA covers a particular transaction, and what additional remedies apply, depends on the facts and the law.

How to cancel and stop further charges

Use the provider’s stated cancellation method first, then create a clear record of what happened. The FTC’s consumer guidance recommends retaining cancellation requests and notes about conversations, and checking later bank or card statements.

  1. Find the controlling account. Sign in to the website or app that bills you. Look under labels such as Account, Settings, Billing, Membership, or Subscription. If another company processed enrollment, check the receipt and terms to identify the billing merchant. Labels vary, so use the service’s help or terms page if the control is not visible.
  2. Read the renewal details before confirming. Note the next renewal date, amount, renewal interval, and any stated deadline. Save or print the terms and the screen showing the cancellation option.
  3. Complete the final cancellation action. Continue until the service displays a completion message or sends a confirmation. A journey that merely pauses marketing messages or turns off notifications is not necessarily cancellation of billing.
  4. Preserve evidence immediately. Save the confirmation email, screenshot the final page, and record the date, time, account identifier, and exact route used. If cancellation requires a call or chat, keep the transcript or write down the representative’s name, the number or chat channel, and what was promised.
  5. Check the next statement. Review the next card or bank statement and, where the service bills on a longer interval, check each statement through the expected renewal date. Look for a charge under a different merchant descriptor as well as the familiar service name.
  6. Dispute a continuing charge. If the merchant charges after your documented cancellation attempt, contact the card issuer or bank and ask how to dispute the charge. The FTC describes online and phone dispute routes; provide the dates, confirmation, statements, and correspondence.
  7. Report an unauthorized subscription. If you were charged for a subscription you did not agree to, report it to the FTC or your state attorney general. Reporting is separate from disputing the transaction with the payment provider, so consider both routes.

These steps are general consumer information, not individualized legal advice. The best route can depend on the payment type, the merchant’s terms, your location, and the facts surrounding the charge.

If the cancellation path is blocked or confusing

You cannot find a cancellation control

Search the account’s billing and membership areas, the help center, and the original receipt for the merchant’s stated method. Capture screenshots showing where you looked and any message that directs you elsewhere. Do not assume deleting an app, removing a payment card, or closing a device account cancels the underlying subscription.

The service requires a call or representative

Use the published phone or chat route, ask the representative to cancel the recurring plan, and request written confirmation. Record the date, time, case number, and the effective cancellation date. If you remain on hold or the call drops, note those attempts and use another official channel so you can show a continuing effort to cancel.

You receive a confirmation but are charged anyway

Match the charge to the confirmation’s effective date and the terms. If the charge is after the stated cancellation date, send the merchant a concise written request for correction with the evidence attached. Then contact the card issuer or bank to dispute it and continue monitoring statements.

The merchant says the charge is valid

Ask the merchant to identify the consent record, renewal term, and cancellation date it relied on. Keep the reply. Provide that information, plus your cancellation evidence, to the payment provider during its dispute process. If you believe you never consented to the subscription, report it to the FTC or your state attorney general.

What to check before starting any recurring service

Use the following questions when comparing plans or reviewing an offer. They focus on information the FTC identifies as relevant to disclosures, consent, recurring charges, cancellation, and records; they do not create a provider ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check What to verify Why it matters
Renewal interval Monthly, annual, or another period; identify the first renewal date. Determines when inaction can trigger the next charge.
Renewal amount Price after any introductory period and whether taxes or fees are added. A low initial price may not be the recurring price.
Price changes How and when the merchant says it will notify you of a new amount. Prevents a later statement from being a surprise.
Cancellation channel Website, app, phone, chat, email, or another specified route. You need to know where a valid request must be made.
Confirmation record Whether the service supplies an email, receipt, case number, or on-screen confirmation. A record helps establish when you canceled.
Effective date Whether access ends immediately or at the end of the paid period. Explains what “canceled” means for access and billing.
Terms and deadlines Required notice, minimum term, renewal window, and refund language. These conditions can determine whether a request stops the next charge.

Why inattention matters without proving intent

Auto-renewal shifts the default from “pay again only after another order” to “continue unless stopped.” People change cards, lose track of trial dates, stop using an app, or overlook a renewal email. The FTC-hosted economic discussion treats that inattention and inertia as important features of subscription markets, including evidence of delayed cancellation in automatically renewing health-club contracts.

Those behavioral effects are not proof that every hard-to-cancel design was created to trap customers. To evaluate a particular service, distinguish an ordinary missed deadline from a hidden link, a misleading button, a refusal to honor a documented request, or charges that continued after cancellation.

What the federal debate is examining now

The FTC’s March 2026 notice frames the open questions around whether consumers understand the offer, give informed consent, and can end the service without deterrents. It asks for information that could support amendments to the current rule or other approaches. Until a future rule is finalized and effective, the notice does not replace the existing legal framework.

For a consumer dealing with a charge today, the practical response is therefore evidence-based rather than waiting for a nationwide interface mandate: identify the billing merchant, cancel through the stated route, preserve the record, inspect statements, dispute unauthorized or post-cancellation charges, and use government complaint channels when appropriate.
