Yes. A strong magnet or magnetic metal close to an iPhone’s rear camera can interfere with sensors that help position the camera lens for optical image stabilization (OIS) and autofocus. Apple says this may reduce sensor accuracy and limit lens movement, affecting camera performance.
How a nearby magnet affects the camera
OIS reduces image motion by using a gyroscope to detect camera movement and moving the lens in response. Closed-loop autofocus uses accelerometers to measure and compensate for gravity and vibration; magnetic sensors track lens position so the system can set that compensating movement accurately.
A nearby magnetic field can interfere with, or temporarily disable, the lens-position sensors. Apple says that can make their readings less accurate and limit the lens’s range of movement. The camera may still take pictures, but without the benefits of OIS and closed-loop autofocus. Apple’s guidance does not establish that every exposure causes permanent damage, nor does it promise a universal recovery time. Apple Support: Magnetic accessories may interfere with iPhone cameras.
Which accessories can cause interference?
Apple identifies accessories with strong magnets or magnetizable metal plates close to the rear cameras as potential sources. These can include folio covers that latch magnetically, cases that join together with magnets, and rigid mounts such as car mounts.

Apple’s recommendation is: “For the best camera performance, avoid accessories that use magnets or magnetic metal near the iPhone rear camera (or cameras).” If you want to avoid those components, a non-magnetic iPhone case is one category to consider—not an Apple-tested or endorsed solution. Check the case’s construction and compatibility with your exact iPhone model before buying.
Which iPhone cameras have OIS or closed-loop autofocus?
Availability depends on the iPhone model and, on multi-camera phones, the camera module. Apple lists these capabilities as follows:

- OIS: iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 7 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation).
- Closed-loop autofocus: iPhone XS and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation).
- Camera-module exceptions: OIS is not available on the Ultra Wide camera on iPhone 11 and later, or on the Telephoto camera on iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus.
These distinctions matter: a phone’s rear cameras do not all necessarily use the same stabilization or focusing systems. Apple’s camera guidance provides the model and module details at its magnetic-accessory support page.

- Remove the case and magnetic accessories. Take off the case and detach nearby magnetic accessories, including mounts or plates positioned near the rear camera.
- Check the camera again. Test whether the focus or stabilization issue changes with those accessories removed.
- Use Apple’s camera troubleshooting guidance if the problem remains. If removing the accessories does not resolve the issue, follow Apple’s steps for troubleshooting iPhone camera problems.
Apple’s camera guidance does not give a magnetic-field threshold, a camera-specific safe distance, an incidence rate, or a recovery time that applies to every case. It is therefore not possible to give a precise distance at which every magnet becomes safe for every iPhone.

Camera interference is different from medical-device advice
Apple separately warns that iPhone and MagSafe accessories contain magnets and electromagnetic fields that might interfere with medical devices. Its advice is to consult a physician and the medical-device manufacturer. Apple also gives spacing guidance for implanted pacemakers and defibrillators in its iPhone safety guide. That medical-device guidance is not a safe-distance rule for protecting an iPhone camera.
