Streaming TV lag has three common causes that feel identical: the television or streaming stick is slow at drawing menus, one app is malfunctioning, or the network is delaying content. Diagnose which layer is responsible before buying anything. A restart, completed updates, app cleanup and a storage check are free and reversible; an Ethernet cable or router change is justified only when tests show a connection problem. Better Wi‑Fi cannot make an underpowered interface processor render menus faster.
First, identify what is actually slow
Use the symptom, not the assumption, to choose the first test. Press the Home, Back and arrow buttons while no video is playing, then open two different apps. Note whether the delay appears before a screen loads, only after you select a title, or everywhere.
Menus and remote responses are slow everywhere
If Home, Settings and several apps take seconds to react, the bottleneck is probably device software, background work, limited storage or aging hardware. A network-speed test cannot prove that menu processing is healthy: menus can lag even when internet bandwidth is excellent. Google’s guidance for a slow or laggy Google TV starts with a restart, app management and updates (official help page, accessed October 13, 2026).

Open a different service. If the other app responds normally, troubleshoot the affected app rather than resetting the television. TCL’s Google TV support specifically recommends clearing that app’s cache for a single-app problem; Google’s broader troubleshooting also provides an option to clear app data. Clearing data can sign you out and remove local app state, so reserve it for later in the sequence.

Several apps fail to open or show a memory message
Messages such as “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app” or “Insufficient memory” point to storage or connectivity, according to Roku’s support guidance (last updated September 6, 2026). Check free space and remove apps you no longer use. If every app is affected, continue with the device and network checks below.
Menus are responsive but video buffers or playback fails
When navigation is quick but a stream spins, drops quality or stops, investigate Wi‑Fi, router placement, interference and congestion. A wired connection can confirm the diagnosis. This is a network symptom, not evidence that the TV’s processor needs an upgrade.
The slowdown began during an update
Let downloads and installations finish before judging performance. Google and TCL both note that a TV may run more slowly while app updates are downloading or installing. Restart only after the update indicator has cleared, then retest the same action.

A low-risk troubleshooting order
Retest after each step. Changing one variable at a time tells you which fix worked and avoids erasing useful evidence.
- Restart the TV or streaming device. Use the platform’s restart command rather than immediately unplugging it.
- Classify the problem. Compare Home and Settings navigation, two apps, and playback in a title you know normally works.
- Allow active updates to finish. Keep the device powered and connected until app and system updates complete.
- Install available app and system updates. Newer builds can fix crashes or compatibility faults, although an update may temporarily increase activity.
- Check storage and close or remove unused apps. Use the platform’s storage screen where available; remove only apps you can reinstall later.
- Troubleshoot Wi‑Fi when loading or playback symptoms point to the connection. Check signal, router position, interference and congestion, then test Ethernet if supported.
- Clear an individual app’s cache or data only when that app is the outlier. Record login details first.
- Factory-reset only as a last resort. It erases settings and device data, so use it after the reversible steps fail.

Restart from Settings
On Google TV, open Settings > System > Restart and confirm. This is preferable to repeatedly pulling power because it lets the operating system close processes cleanly. After the home screen returns, test directional movement and launch two apps before changing anything else.

Stop background apps and finish updates
Force-stop recently opened apps from the app-management area, then open the app store and install pending app updates. Check Settings > System > About > System update (the exact path can vary by manufacturer) for a TV update. Google warns that navigation can remain slower while app updates are in progress; wait for them to finish and retest.
Check connection settings only for connection symptoms
For buffering or slow content loading, verify the selected Wi‑Fi network and band. Restart the router, move it into a more open position, or connect the TV by Ethernet where the model supports it. Google also suggests trying the 5 GHz band when the router offers it; 5 GHz can reduce congestion at short range, while distance and walls may make the lower-frequency band more reliable.

Check profile, remote and app data
Confirm that the intended Google account profile is selected. If the remote itself misses presses, replace or recharge its batteries, check for obstructions and review remote settings. For a single malfunctioning app, clear its cache first; clearing app data is more disruptive because it resets that app’s stored state and may require a new sign-in.
Do not start with a factory reset
Google states that a factory reset erases device data. Use it only after restart, updates, storage cleanup, app-specific repair and network checks have failed, and make sure you know every account password before proceeding.
Roku: memory errors and wireless diagnosis
Resolve “Not enough memory” and “Can’t run app”
Roku identifies low storage and network trouble as possible causes of these messages. Perform a system restart first; Roku describes this as the least invasive reset and says it does not change your settings. Then remove channels you no longer use to free space and try launching the affected channel again.

Improve a weak Wi‑Fi path
Check the Roku device’s connection and signal screens. Place the router and player closer together, reduce walls and other obstructions, and move sources of interference such as crowded wireless equipment. Pause large downloads or other high-bandwidth activity while testing. If the device supports it, try 5 GHz or Ethernet.
A streaming stick mounted behind a television can have its wireless signal blocked by the set’s chassis. Roku points to a free HDMI extender that moves the stick away from the TV; try that before buying hardware. Compatibility with 5 GHz DFS channels is model-dependent, so do not force a channel setting that the specific Roku model cannot use.
Use Ethernet as a diagnostic
If playback becomes stable and app loading improves on Ethernet, the Wi‑Fi arrangement is the likely fault. Ethernet does not accelerate menu rendering caused by a slow processor; it only removes wireless variability from the connection path.
Reserve factory reset for the end
Roku’s factory reset erases settings and requires channels and accounts to be set up again. Record network credentials and account information before using it.

Clear cache at the right scope
When one app is slow, open its app-information screen and clear that app’s cache. When the whole TV or multiple apps are affected, TCL suggests clearing cached data for all apps where the model provides that control. Cache removal is less disruptive than clearing full app data; still, expect the first launch afterward to take longer while temporary files are rebuilt.
Remove unused apps and wait for updates
Uninstall apps you do not use, then let any active downloads or installations finish. A device that is simultaneously updating many apps can appear sluggish even when no permanent fault exists. Retest after the home screen has been idle for a few minutes.
How to prove whether Wi‑Fi is the problem
Match the test to the symptom
Run a connection check while a video is buffering, not as a substitute for testing menu navigation. Compare the same title over Wi‑Fi and, if supported, Ethernet. Also compare the TV with a phone or laptop in the same location. If only the TV struggles, placement, compatibility or the TV’s network radio may be involved; if several devices struggle at once, investigate the router or internet service.
Reduce distance, interference and congestion
- Move the router higher and into an open area rather than inside a cabinet.
- Reduce the number of walls and metal objects between router and TV or stick.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and game updates during the test.
- Try the router’s 5 GHz network when the device is nearby and supports it; use the other band when range through walls is better.
- Use Ethernet for a permanent wired path if the TV or streaming device has a compatible port or adapter.
Roku’s wireless guidance notes that routers older than five years may lack the range or speed needed for persistent problems, while newer dual-band or mesh systems can help coverage. Consider replacement only after placement, congestion and Ethernet tests show a continuing network deficiency—not for system-wide interface lag with no playback symptoms.
What to buy—and what not to buy
| Option | Use it when | What it can and cannot fix | Cost and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethernet cable | Video buffers, Wi‑Fi is unstable, or Ethernet testing improves playback | Can stabilize the network; does not make slow menus render faster | Optional hardware; easy to remove |
| HDMI extender | A streaming stick is hidden behind the television and signal blockage is plausible | Can improve wireless reception; does not repair storage or processor limits | Roku points to a free extender; try it before paid accessories |
| New router or mesh system | Multiple devices have weak coverage or congestion persists after basic tests | Can improve range and capacity; cannot cure an app-specific bug or slow interface CPU | Higher-cost hardware; verify device and regional compatibility |
| Replacement TV or streaming device | Menus remain slow after updates, cleanup and reset, with no network fault | May provide a faster processor; requires migration and setup | Largest expense; consider only after diagnosis |
Common failure modes and recovery
The restart helped for only a few minutes
Check whether updates are still running, storage is nearly full, or one app repeatedly reopens in the background. Finish updates, remove unused apps and force-stop the offending app. If the slowdown returns across every menu, document when it begins and proceed to a system update check rather than repeating power cycles indefinitely.

Clearing cache changed nothing
Cache clearing targets temporary files, not a damaged account state, unsupported app build or weak connection. Test another app, update the affected app, and only then consider clearing its data. Re-enter credentials after confirming that the network is stable.
Wi‑Fi is fast on another device but the TV still buffers
Distance, antenna placement, interference and band compatibility can affect the TV differently. Test closer router placement or Ethernet. For Roku, remember that a stick behind the TV can be shielded and that some models cannot use certain 5 GHz DFS channels.
A factory reset did not solve the issue
Recheck the symptom classification. A reset cannot overcome an unstable internet path, a blocked stick antenna or a service-side outage, and it will not turn a low-power processor into a faster one. Restore apps gradually so you can identify whether one installation recreates the lag.
When the evidence points to aging hardware
After a clean restart, completed updates, adequate free storage, app isolation and a stable wired or well-tested wireless connection, persistent delays in Home and Settings indicate a device-side performance limit or hardware fault. There is no published official statistic in the cited support materials that ranks Google TV, Roku or TCL interfaces by speed, so choose a replacement based on observed responsiveness, update support and required ports rather than an unsupported performance ranking.
Keep the old device’s account, Wi‑Fi and app details available before migrating. If only one service remains slow while the operating system and other apps are responsive, contact that service’s support instead of replacing the television.
