Spacecraft are sometimes guided into the remote South Pacific at the end of their missions because reentry does not always destroy every component. A controlled deorbit lets operators steer the surviving debris footprint toward an uninhabited ocean region instead of leaving the final ground track to chance over populated land.

“Point Nemo” is a useful nickname for this disposal region, not a claim that every vehicle is aimed at one exact coordinate. The actual target is a broad area, and the method is chosen according to the spacecraft’s orbit, propulsion, construction and mission plan.

What Point Nemo is—and what it is not

NOAA defines Point Nemo as the place in the ocean farthest from land. Its coordinates are 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, roughly 2,688 kilometers from the nearest land points. Those figures come from NOAA’s National Ocean Service page, last updated in 2021.

The location is often called the “spacecraft cemetery” in popular explanations, but disposal operations do not normally target that single coordinate. A falling spacecraft travels along a ground track, and atmospheric breakup spreads fragments over a long footprint. NASA’s planning for the International Space Station, for example, specifies an uninhabited South Pacific debris footprint of 6,000 kilometers or less, rather than a pinpoint splashdown. The target can therefore be near Point Nemo without being Point Nemo itself.

Remote ocean disposal reduces the number of people and structures beneath the predicted path. It does not make reentry risk-free, and it does not guarantee that every piece sinks or vaporizes.

Why a spacecraft needs a disposal plan

When a spacecraft reaches the end of its useful life, operators must decide what happens to its orbit and its remaining hardware. The choice depends on how quickly atmospheric drag will lower the orbit, how much propellant remains, how large or dense the vehicle is, and whether its trajectory can be controlled accurately.

Most of the vehicle may burn up, but not all of it

During atmospheric reentry, compression and friction heat the spacecraft intensely. NASA expects most International Space Station hardware to burn or vaporize. Dense, compact or heat-resistant components can nevertheless survive and reach the surface. Tanks, engines, gyroscopes, structural joints and other concentrated masses are more likely to remain than thin panels or lightweight insulation.

The ocean is selected because a surviving fragment landing there is generally less likely to injure people or damage buildings than the same fragment landing over a city or industrial area. The purpose is exposure reduction, not disposal by disappearance.

Uncontrolled decay cannot guarantee a safe footprint

A low-orbit object gradually loses altitude as it collides with the thin upper atmosphere. This natural decay eventually causes reentry, but the exact time and location can remain uncertain. Small changes in atmospheric density, attitude and orbital position accumulate over many passes around Earth. An uncontrolled entry therefore cannot guarantee that surviving debris will avoid inhabited land.

NASA’s Orbital Debris Program Office distinguishes this natural process from a controlled entry. A controlled entry uses additional propellant and a larger or more capable propulsion system to lower the orbit and steepen the flight path. That shortens the final uncertainty window and gives controllers a better chance of placing the debris footprint over a selected ocean area.

How controlled deorbiting works

  1. Assess the spacecraft and orbit. Operators model the vehicle’s mass, shape, fuel, structural strength, altitude, inclination and expected breakup behavior. They also examine how quickly natural drag would cause reentry.
  2. Lower the orbit when needed. A propulsion burn reduces orbital energy. The spacecraft then intersects denser atmosphere sooner, rather than remaining in orbit for an uncontrolled period.
  3. Line up the ground track. Controllers choose a sequence of burns and an entry time that places the predicted path over a remote ocean region. The target is a footprint with length and width, not a single point.
  4. Execute the final maneuver. A final deorbit burn creates the steep entry trajectory. After that burn, atmospheric forces dominate and the vehicle breaks apart, ablates and—if any pieces remain—lands along the predicted corridor.
  5. Monitor the entry. Tracking data and spacecraft telemetry are used to refine the expected footprint and coordinate warnings or maritime and aviation restrictions when appropriate.

Controlled entry normally consumes more propellant than simply allowing an orbit to decay. The trade-off is greater control over where the debris can come down. A mission that lacks sufficient fuel, attitude control or a suitable orbit may not be able to perform this option.

Why the International Space Station is planned for the South Pacific

The ISS is a very large structure, so its retirement cannot be treated like the disposal of a small satellite. NASA’s transition plan calls for safe reentry into an unpopulated ocean area. The plan combines natural orbital decay with deliberate altitude-lowering maneuvers, ground-track alignment and a final deorbit burn after the crew has returned.

NASA’s published planning identifies a dedicated U.S. Deorbit Vehicle being developed and delivered by SpaceX. A NASA Office of Procurement vignette published in 2025 says the target for all ISS debris is an uninhabited South Pacific footprint of 6,000 kilometers or less; it records the contract award in June 2024. Implementation details and the retirement schedule are time-sensitive, so the latest NASA transition information should be checked before relying on a specific date or vehicle status.

The objective is not to make the station vanish. NASA expects much of its structure to burn up, while some dense or heat-resistant parts may survive. A remote ocean footprint gives those parts the largest practical separation from populated areas.

Do all old satellites go to Point Nemo?

No. “Point Nemo” is shorthand for one type of controlled ocean disposal, not a universal destination for retired spacecraft.

Spacecraft situation Typical disposal choice Why the choice differs
Low-orbit vehicle with enough propulsion and a predictable footprint Controlled reentry over an uninhabited ocean Operators can spend fuel to reduce uncertainty and steer surviving debris away from land.
Low-orbit vehicle with little fuel or limited control Uncontrolled natural decay The orbit eventually collapses, but the time and entry location cannot be guaranteed precisely.
Higher-orbit satellite Move to a higher disposal or “graveyard” orbit For some high satellites, changing orbit away from operational traffic requires less fuel than returning to Earth.
Vehicle with a mission-specific disposal design Reentry, orbit raising or another approved end-of-life plan Propulsion, inclination, collision risk, spacecraft construction and regulatory requirements vary.

NASA’s educational material specifically notes that some high-orbit spacecraft require less fuel to be moved farther from active satellites than to be sent back through the atmosphere. Their end state is therefore not the South Pacific.

Operators also consider whether an uncontrolled object could collide with another spacecraft before it naturally reenters. A disposal plan is a balance among collision avoidance, fuel, orbital mechanics, debris survival and public safety.

What happens during reentry?

Heating and breakup

As the spacecraft descends into denser air, aerodynamic heating rises rapidly. External surfaces can melt, fragment or vaporize. The vehicle may break into many pieces rather than remain intact until the ocean.

The debris footprint

Surviving pieces continue along the vehicle’s trajectory, but their landing points are spread by the spacecraft’s velocity, breakup altitude, aerodynamic properties and winds. That elongated region is the debris footprint. It explains why a disposal target is described as an area, such as the ISS footprint of 6,000 kilometers or less, rather than as Point Nemo’s coordinates.

Residual risk

Even a carefully planned entry has uncertainty. Atmospheric conditions change, tracking errors accumulate and the breakup behavior of a complex structure is difficult to predict exactly. The ocean target makes the expected consequences smaller; it does not eliminate the possibility of debris outside the center of the predicted corridor.

Earlier examples of controlled ocean disposal

Mir, 2001

Russia’s Mir space station was deorbited in a staged operation on March 23, 2001. NASA’s historical account says a Progress vehicle first lowered Mir’s orbit, then fired its engines for 22 minutes to bring the station out of orbit over the South Pacific. The sequence demonstrated how a large, inhabited station could be guided toward a remote ocean region rather than left to decay randomly.

European Automated Transfer Vehicles

The European Space Agency reports that all five of its Automated Transfer Vehicle missions performed controlled reentries into an uninhabited South Pacific area. These cargo spacecraft were designed to leave orbit after completing their missions, providing repeated operational experience with targeting and tracking a planned ocean footprint.

Why the South Pacific is suitable

  • Very low population exposure: the region is one of the most remote parts of the ocean, with Point Nemo itself thousands of kilometers from nearby land.
  • Large open-water area: a long debris footprint can be placed away from coastlines, cities and dense shipping routes more easily than over land.
  • Predictable orbital geometry: mission planners can select an entry opportunity when the spacecraft’s ground track crosses the chosen region.
  • Established operational precedent: Mir and ESA’s five ATV missions used controlled South Pacific reentries.

“Remote” does not mean unmonitored. Maritime and aviation authorities can issue notices, and tracking networks continue to follow the vehicle. The target is selected to reduce exposure, not because nobody is capable of detecting the event.

Environmental and safety limits of the practice

Agencies describe controlled ocean reentry as a responsible public-safety measure, and NASA projects environmental effects from the ISS disposal to be small. That is an expectation, not proof that effects are zero. Materials entering the atmosphere can produce gases and particles, and surviving hardware can reach the seafloor. The available agency descriptions support the conclusion that an uninhabited ocean minimizes human and property risk; they do not establish no environmental impact.

Nor should a planned reentry be described as risk-free. The safety case depends on accurate tracking, a functioning propulsion system, suitable weather and atmospheric conditions, and a debris model that allows for uncertainty. If a burn cannot be completed or the trajectory moves outside limits, controllers may delay the attempt or revise the plan.

How to interpret “spacecraft cemetery” headlines

The phrase is a convenient public label for a remote South Pacific disposal zone. It should not be read as a literal graveyard at one set of coordinates, nor as evidence that every retired satellite is sent there. A precise explanation is: operators sometimes perform controlled reentries into an uninhabited South Pacific debris footprint, often described using Point Nemo as the nearest familiar geographic reference.

Whether a particular spacecraft belongs in that category depends on four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Is its orbit low enough, or can it be lowered with available propulsion?
  2. Can controllers predict and steer the final ground track?
  3. How much of the vehicle is likely to survive atmospheric entry?
  4. Do the mission design and public-safety constraints support a controlled ocean reentry?

If the answers are unfavorable, the spacecraft may be left to decay under tracking, moved to a higher disposal orbit, or handled through another mission-specific plan.
