If websites fail to open in every browser, start with the shared causes: your internet connection, device settings, DNS, security software, or the website itself. If only one site fails, or the problem occurs in just one browser, the likely cause is narrower. Identify which pattern fits before changing settings.
First, identify what is failing
Check that the address is spelled correctly, then open another familiar website. Note the exact error message and whether the problem affects one site, several sites, or every site. Messages about DNS, a proxy, a certificate, or a connection can help narrow the cause.
Try the same site in another browser. Mozilla recommends this comparison because a failure across browsers points away from a single browser’s cache or extensions and toward the device, network, or site. For browser-specific connection errors, see Mozilla’s website-loading troubleshooting guide and Google Chrome’s connection and loading-error guide.

| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| One site fails in every browser | Check the address, site availability, and site-specific data. |
| Several or all sites fail in one browser, but work in another | Check the affected browser’s extensions, proxy, cookies, cache, and settings. |
| Websites fail in every browser on one device | Check that device’s connection, date and time, DNS, and security settings. |
| Websites fail on multiple devices using the same network | Investigate the router, network restrictions, or ISP service. |
The last two comparisons are practical ways to isolate the fault: test another device on the same network, or test the affected device on a different network if one is available. If the problem follows the network, focus on the network; if it follows the device, focus on its settings.

If every browser is affected, check the connection and device
Verify the network connection
- Confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected and that the device is using the intended network.
- If you are on café, hotel, or other public Wi-Fi, look for a sign-in page or portal that must be completed before browsing.
- Check the router and modem for an obvious outage or disconnected cable. If appropriate, restart the network equipment according to its instructions, then retry.
- If the device supports it, a wired Ethernet connection can help determine whether the problem is limited to Wi-Fi. It is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
Google’s guide recommends checking the internet connection and router or modem when Chrome cannot load pages. If the connection remains unavailable, the ISP or network administrator may need to investigate.
Correct the system clock
Check the device’s date, time, and time zone. A clock that is significantly wrong can interfere with secure-site certificate validation. Correct the clock and retry rather than disabling browser security or bypassing a certificate warning.

Review security software and network restrictions
Firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware, privacy, VPN, or proxy settings can affect website access. Check only settings you understand, and avoid turning off protection as a general troubleshooting step. A work, school, or other managed device may have network rules you cannot change; ask the administrator. Apple also notes that enterprise firewalls can prevent access to websites. Its Mac guidance is at If a web page or link won’t open on Mac.
Consider DNS after basic checks
DNS translates a website’s domain name into the address computers use to reach it. A local DNS cache or DNS server problem can prevent sites from resolving in any browser. Mozilla’s cross-browser guide describes clearing the DNS cache; on Windows, it gives the command ipconfig /flushdns. The guide says restarting macOS clears its cache. Do not run the Windows command on another operating system, and treat changing DNS providers as an advanced step rather than the first fix.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If only one browser is affected
When the same site works in another browser, focus on the browser that fails instead of resetting the whole device or router.
- Open a private or incognito window and try the site. If it loads there, an extension or stored site data may be involved.
- Disable extensions, then re-enable them one at a time while testing to find whether one is interfering.
- If needed, clear the affected site’s cookies or data and the browser cache. Clearing site data can sign you out.
- Restart and update the browser, then check its proxy settings. A proxy refusal or “Unable to find the proxy server” message makes proxy settings especially relevant.
Browser labels and settings differ, so use the instructions for your browser and version rather than applying a menu path from another browser.

If one website is the only one that fails
Recheck the URL and try the site in another browser. If it still fails there while other sites load, the problem may be specific to that site: its service could be unavailable, or site-specific data may be causing trouble. If the site works in another browser, try the affected browser’s private window and targeted site-data checks.
To distinguish a site outage from a local problem, try the site from another device or network if available. If it fails across devices and networks, wait and try again or contact the site. Apple’s guidance for Mac users puts it simply: “The website may be unavailable temporarily. Try again later.”

When to contact your ISP or administrator
Contact your ISP or network administrator if several devices on the same network cannot load websites after you have verified the connection and checked the network equipment. If only a managed work or school device is affected, its administrator can confirm whether a firewall, proxy, or other policy is blocking access. For a single site that remains unavailable across browsers and networks, contact that site’s support team.
