A PC game can run perfectly on a desktop yet be frustrating—or unusable—on a handheld. The problem may be missing controller support, microscopic text, a mouse-dependent launcher, a Windows-only component, unsupported anti-cheat, or a poor performance-and-battery trade-off. On Steam Deck, Valve evaluates all of those separately; a game can launch and still require manual work.
The reliable approach is to identify the device, operating system, storefront and exact symptom first, then test one change at a time. The steps below cover Steam Deck and explain where Windows handhelds follow a different path.
Why won’t this PC game work on my handheld?
“Works” has a broader meaning on a handheld than simply reaching the main menu. Valve’s Steam Deck review considers controller input, display behavior, text legibility, launcher usability, and compatibility of the game and its middleware through Proton. A title can therefore be technically launchable but still be a poor handheld experience.

Desktop games sometimes assume a full keyboard, a mouse pointer, or many simultaneous keys. A controller layout may be missing, incomplete, or dependent on a community-created configuration. Menus can also show keyboard prompts even when movement works with a gamepad. Steam Deck’s review criteria explicitly check physical controls, controller icons and on-screen keyboard behavior.

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)

A small screen exposes desktop-sized interface design
Menus and dialogue built for a large monitor can become difficult to read at handheld viewing distance. Valve checks whether a game supports Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, has sensible defaults and keeps text legible. Those are Steam Deck criteria, not a universal resolution requirement for every handheld.
Launchers and sign-in windows can be the real obstacle
A game may run once its launcher is past, but the launcher itself can require a mouse, a tiny click target or text entry that is not controller-friendly. Valve’s examples of games rated Playable include titles requiring touchscreen navigation. On Windows handhelds such as the ROG Ally, ASUS documents touchscreen use and a gamepad-layout on-screen keyboard for this kind of interaction.
SteamOS, Proton and Windows-only components
SteamOS uses Proton to run many Windows games. Proton is a compatibility layer, not a promise that every executable, launcher, digital-rights-management component or middleware package will work. Valve’s guidance requires the game and all of its middleware to be supported when a title runs through Proton.

Anti-cheat is part of the Proton compatibility question. Some games support their anti-cheat configuration on Linux; others do not. It is inaccurate to say that every anti-cheat game is blocked or that every anti-cheat system works. The specific game’s current configuration decides the result.
Performance and battery are coupled
A handheld has device-specific power, cooling and display limits. Resolution, graphics workload, frame-rate target, refresh rate and battery use interact, so a setting that helps one game may hurt another. There is no single graphics preset that is appropriate for every handheld or title.
What Steam Deck’s compatibility badges actually mean
Steam Deck’s badge is a starting point, not a permanent guarantee. Valve says the review is ongoing, so status and game behavior can change as Proton, the game or its middleware are updated.
| Badge | Practical meaning | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Works well out of the box | Valve’s checks found the expected controls, display behavior, legible text and system support without material manual work. |
| Playable | Works with manual adjustments | You may need a community control configuration, touchscreen input, an on-screen keyboard or another small workaround. |
| Unsupported | Currently not functional | The present review found a blocking problem. Status can change, so check the live game entry before trying again. |
| Unknown | Not yet checked by Valve | The badge supplies no compatibility conclusion; look for current game and device information and be prepared to troubleshoot. |
For the display requirement, Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility guidance states: “The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280×800 or 1280×720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.” For Proton, the same guidance says: “If running through Proton, the game and all its middleware should be supported by Proton. This includes anti-cheat support.”

Badges also describe a particular review rather than every possible play session. A game update can introduce a new launcher, alter input handling or change middleware. Conversely, a Proton or game update can improve an older title. Use the current game detail page as your first reference instead of relying on a screenshot, an old review or a badge remembered from a previous installation.
How do I diagnose the problem before changing settings?
Classify the failure first. “It will not launch,” “it launches but ignores my controls,” “the launcher is unusable,” “the text is too small” and “the frame rate is poor” are different problems with different fixes.

- Launch failure: nothing appears, the game closes immediately, or a compatibility or middleware error appears.
- Input failure: the game runs but does not recognize buttons, sticks, mouse movement or text entry.
- Interface failure: menus, launcher windows or dialogue are too small or cannot be navigated without a pointer.
- Performance failure: low frame rate, stutter, excessive heat or rapid battery drain after the game starts.
- Instability: crashes, freezes or behavior that changes between launches.
Write down the handheld model, operating system, storefront, game version and exact symptom. This prevents treating every compatibility problem as insufficient hardware.
A five-minute pre-check
- Confirm that the handheld is online and that the game has finished installing updates.
- Restart the device rather than repeatedly relaunching a frozen process.
- Note whether the problem occurs in the game, its launcher, a sign-in page or only after loading a save.
- Try the default control profile once before replacing it. This establishes a baseline.
- Record any exact error text. “Unsupported anti-cheat” and “controller not detected” point to different owners and remedies.
Do not change resolution, graphics quality, Proton version and control layout simultaneously. If four variables change at once, you cannot tell which one helped or created a new problem.
How do I fix a game that won’t launch on Steam Deck?
- Check the live compatibility information. Open the game’s current Steam detail page and inspect its badge and compatibility notes. Valve’s review is continuous, so an old status or forum post may no longer describe the current build.
- Install updates and restart. Apply pending SteamOS and game updates, then restart the handheld. Valve lists updating and restarting among the first checks for Deck problems.
- Test a compatibility tool deliberately. Open the game’s library entry, choose Properties, then Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool and test an available version one at a time. Record which version you tried and whether the symptom changed.
- Separate Proton from middleware failure. If the game, launcher, DRM component or anti-cheat is not supported in the Proton path, changing the compatibility tool may not solve it. Look for current game-specific compatibility information rather than cycling through settings indefinitely.
- Escalate to the right owner. A persistent game or Proton problem belongs with current game/developer or compatibility guidance. A driver, firmware or device-specific fault belongs with the handheld manufacturer.
Forcing a different tool is a targeted test, not a universal repair. Keep the original setting available so you can return to it if the experiment makes behavior worse.
What a failed launch tells you
A crash before the title screen suggests a different path from a launcher that appears and then rejects sign-in. If the launcher opens but the game never starts, test pointer and text entry first. If an anti-cheat or DRM message appears, identify that component rather than assuming the graphics hardware is too slow. If only one game fails while others launch normally, the evidence points toward that title’s files, launcher or middleware, not a general handheld defect.
Why does it launch but not recognize my controls?
Inspect the per-game control configuration
Open the game’s controller layout and verify that buttons and sticks are mapped to actions the game actually uses. If the title has no complete official layout, try a well-maintained community layout. Community layouts can solve keyboard-heavy games, but they can also contain missing bindings or unexpected shortcuts; test movement, camera, menus, pause and text entry before settling on one.
Handle pointer-only screens
Use the touchscreen for a launcher, character creator or menu that expects a pointer. On a Windows handheld, follow the model’s documented touchscreen and gamepad-keyboard workflow. A gamepad layout for the on-screen keyboard can make a text field usable, but it does not convert every mouse interaction into a comfortable controller interface.
Check prompts and focus
Some games receive controller input only after the game window has focus. Click or tap the game window once, then test the controls. If prompts remain keyboard-only, the game may be reading a different input device or may need a custom layout. Do not assume that a successful launch proves controller support.
Test the whole control path
Check more than movement. Confirm that you can open the pause menu, navigate settings, select an item, dismiss a dialog and enter a name or password. A layout that handles gameplay but cannot operate the launcher is not a complete handheld solution. If a community profile uses a trackpad or rear button for mouse clicks, note that those bindings may conflict with an in-game action.
Why is the text or launcher hard to use?
Make readability the first display goal
Choose a resolution and interface scale that let you read menus at normal handheld distance. If the game offers separate HUD, subtitle or menu scaling, increase those before lowering every graphics setting. Keep the game’s supported aspect ratio in mind; stretching a desktop layout can make some interfaces less usable.

Get through the launcher once, then reduce friction
Use touchscreen input or the device’s supported on-screen keyboard for sign-in, launch options and text fields. If a launcher opens outside the game window, verify that it has focus and that you can return to the game with the handheld’s normal navigation controls. A launcher that requires a mouse on every start is a usability limitation even when the game itself performs well.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not confuse refresh rate with frame rate
Set a sensible frame-rate target for the game and the display. Valve’s basic Deck guidance warns that selecting a refresh rate above the device model’s limit cannot improve performance and can consume battery faster. A higher refresh number does not create frames that the hardware cannot render.
Look for repeatable friction
One awkward setup screen may be tolerable; a mouse-dependent launcher on every boot is a continuing cost. Count how often you must touch the screen, call up a keyboard or switch layouts during an ordinary session. That practical measure can matter more than whether the game technically carries a Verified or Playable label.
How should I tune performance without chasing a magic preset?
- Start with the game’s default settings and change one variable at a time.
- Choose a frame-rate goal that matches the game’s workload and the handheld’s display.
- Lower the settings that impose the largest graphics workload when frame rate is low, while preserving text and interface clarity.
- Watch for heat, fan noise and battery drain during an actual play session, not only at the title screen.
- Keep refresh rate within the handheld model’s supported range; exceeding that range offers no performance benefit and may shorten battery life.
Because handheld models, games and drivers differ, the evidence does not support one universal preset or a claim that a particular device always wins. Tune for the title you are playing.
Performance symptoms can be misleading. A low frame rate that appears only after several minutes may track heat or a power mode rather than the game’s initial settings. Rapid battery loss can result from a high workload or an unnecessarily high refresh rate. Change the frame-rate target or workload first, then observe a complete session before judging the result.
SteamOS handheld or Windows handheld: which fits a difficult game?
The best choice depends on the games and storefronts you actually use. Steam Deck’s SteamOS path adds Proton and game-level compatibility review. A Windows handheld can avoid that Linux compatibility layer for Windows-native games, but it still has to deal with controller mapping, launchers, text scale, drivers and power limits.
| Decision factor | SteamOS handheld such as Steam Deck | Windows handheld such as ROG Ally |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility path | Many Windows games run through Proton; game and middleware support must be checked. | Windows-native games use the Windows path, while device-specific drivers and controls remain relevant. |
| Storefront and launcher access | Steam integration is central; non-Steam launchers may add setup and input work. | Windows supports major PC launchers, but each launcher may have its own controller and text-entry behavior. |
| Controller usability | Valve evaluates physical controls and controller-navigable launchers; some Playable games need a community layout or touchscreen. | Manufacturer-supported touchscreen and gamepad-layout keyboard features can help with pointer and text-entry tasks. |
| Anti-cheat and middleware | Support depends on the game’s Proton configuration. | Support depends on the Windows game and its anti-cheat or middleware requirements. |
| Display and power tuning | Valve’s criteria include Deck’s default resolutions, good defaults and legible text; refresh rate still affects battery use. | Settings depend on the model’s display, drivers, power modes and cooling. |
Compare your actual library, not an abstract operating-system label. List the storefronts you need, identify games with anti-cheat or separate launchers, and consider how often you are willing to use touch input. A Windows handheld may simplify one title while adding more desktop-style setup elsewhere; SteamOS may provide a smoother Steam flow while requiring a Proton check for a particular game.
This is a decision framework, not a universal ranking. Valve’s support guidance recommends that owners of third-party handhelds consult the manufacturer for detailed device support. Do not replace hardware until the evidence shows that the limitation is specific to the current device rather than a launcher, control, Proton or game configuration issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you stop troubleshooting?
Stop changing settings when the remaining failure is clearly a blocked middleware component, an unsupported anti-cheat configuration or a device-specific fault outside the game. Capture the game version, operating system, compatibility tool, error text and the last change that helped or hurt. That information makes a developer, Valve or device-manufacturer support request actionable.

If the title is marked Unsupported because of a known component, repeated reinstalls and random graphics changes are unlikely to alter the outcome. If the title is Unknown, document your test instead of treating the absence of a badge as proof that it cannot work. Recheck the live entry later because compatibility, drivers and middleware can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam Deck game marked Verified still have problems?
Yes. Verified describes Valve’s review at a point in time and is not a guarantee against later game, Proton, launcher or middleware changes. Check the current game detail page if behavior changes.
Will forcing a different Proton version fix every launch failure?
No. It is a useful targeted test, but unsupported launchers, DRM or anti-cheat can remain blockers regardless of the compatibility tool.
Is a Windows handheld automatically better for every PC game?
No. It may simplify the path for some Windows-native titles, while controller ergonomics, launcher usability, text legibility, drivers, performance and battery life still vary by game and device.

What should I do if a game launches but shows keyboard prompts?
Check the per-game controller layout, confirm the game window has focus and test a complete official or community layout. A touchscreen or on-screen keyboard may still be needed for launcher and text-entry screens.
Does an Unsupported badge mean the game can never work?
No. It means Valve currently found a blocking problem. Game updates, Proton changes or middleware support can alter the status, so consult the current Steam detail page.
Why is my launcher the problem when gameplay is fine?
Launchers often require pointer input, tiny click targets or text entry that a controller does not provide. Use the handheld’s touchscreen or documented on-screen keyboard workflow, and treat repeated mouse-only setup as a usability limitation.
Should I raise the refresh rate to improve a low frame rate?
No. Valve notes that a refresh rate above the handheld model’s limit cannot improve performance and can use battery faster. Set a sensible rate within the device’s supported range and tune the game’s workload separately.
Who should I contact when troubleshooting fails?
Use current game or compatibility guidance for Proton, launcher and middleware failures. Contact the handheld manufacturer for device-specific drivers, firmware, controls or hardware behavior.
The Bottom Line
A handheld problem is not always a hardware problem. Check the game’s current compatibility status, classify the exact failure, test controls and launcher input, keep text readable, and change one performance setting at a time. Proton, anti-cheat, storefronts and device drivers create game-specific outcomes, so use evidence from the title and handheld you actually own before replacing hardware.
