When an interactive website fails on a phone, the cause is usually one of four things: the page does not adapt to the available viewport, it assumes a browser feature the device lacks, its controls depend on mouse or hover input, or the page or one of its resources is not loading correctly. A mobile-only failure does not identify a single bug.

Start by separating a loading problem from a layout or interaction problem, then determine whether other websites work. Visitors can eliminate connection, VPN, JavaScript, and stale Safari data issues. Site owners need to reproduce the exact device and browser conditions, inspect the document and failed resources, and test touch, viewport, and feature assumptions directly.

First identify what “not working” means

Describe the failure before trying a fix. “The website does not work” can mean that the page is blank, the page loads but is laid out incorrectly, a button cannot be tapped, a menu will not open, a form cannot be submitted, or one embedded item such as a video fails. Each symptom points to a different investigation.

What you see Likely area to check first Useful comparison
Blank page, timeout, or browser error Connection, VPN, DNS, blocked requests, server response, or a script that prevents rendering Do other websites load on the same phone and network?
Page loads but text or controls are off-screen, overlapping, or tiny Responsive CSS, fixed widths, viewport settings, or assumptions about browser chrome Does changing orientation or viewport width change the defect?
You can see a control but cannot tap it Small or covered target, mouse-only event handling, hover dependency, or an overlay intercepting input Does a physical mouse, keyboard, or desktop browser work?
A menu, dialog, gesture, or form behaves incorrectly Touch and pointer events, scrolling interference, focus handling, or unsupported JavaScript APIs Does the same action work with a different input method?
Only a video, animation, or embedded widget fails Media format, plug-in assumption, blocked resource, or component-specific JavaScript Does the rest of the page remain usable?

Also record scope. A failure on every site suggests a device, network, or browser setting. A failure on one site, one page, or one component usually belongs to that site’s code or its server. A site that works in one browser but not another should be compared by browser version, operating system, viewport, orientation, input method, and network conditions rather than labeled “incompatible” without testing.

Why a desktop interaction can break on a phone

Responsive layout is more than a narrower window

A responsive page changes its layout as the available width and height change. Desktop designs often assume a wide viewport, a persistent scrollbar, a visible address bar outside the page, and enough room for several columns. On a phone, browser chrome reduces the usable area, and the visible height can change as the address bar expands or collapses. Rotating the device changes both dimensions. A page that uses fixed widths, absolute positions, or a desktop-only breakpoint can therefore hide controls, create horizontal scrolling, or place an invisible layer over the content.

The on-screen keyboard creates another temporary viewport. When a user focuses a form field, the keyboard may cover lower controls or cause the browser to resize the visual area. Dialogs positioned against the initial screen height can appear off-screen. A layout should reflow when the available space changes instead of assuming that the first measured height remains valid.

Mobile browsers do not expose every feature identically

Interactive pages sometimes call a browser API, media capability, storage feature, or CSS behavior without checking whether it exists. If that call throws an error during startup, later code may never attach event handlers, leaving an apparently dead page. Standards-based code should use feature detection: test the capability that is needed, select a supported implementation, and provide a fallback when it is unavailable.

Do not infer support from a user-agent string. Browser detection can misclassify modern browsers, embedded web views, or future versions. MDN’s feature-detection guidance recommends capability tests instead. Its Baseline summaries are useful for selected major browsers, but they do not replace testing older releases, operating-system web views, or assistive technologies.

Touch is not a mouse with a different cursor

A desktop interaction may depend on hover to reveal a menu, a right-click, a precise drag, or a mouse-only event listener. A phone has no persistent hover state and may generate touch, pointer, or compatibility events differently. A control can also be visually present but covered by another element, too close to a neighboring target, or activated only after a mouse event that never arrives.

Touch targets need enough area to hit without activating an adjacent control. Scrolling and gestures must remain possible: an event handler that consumes every touch or pointer movement can prevent normal browser scrolling, pull-to-refresh behavior, or pinch zoom. Pointer Events can provide a common model for mouse and touch where the target browsers support them, while a carefully designed fallback is still needed for unsupported environments.

Plug-ins and desktop media workflows may not exist

Mobile Safari does not rely on desktop plug-ins for audio, video, or animation. A page that embeds a plug-in object, assumes a desktop codec, or routes playback through a plug-in-specific API may show an empty region even though the rest of the page works. Use standard HTML media elements and verify the format, controls, autoplay policy, and error state on the target mobile browser.

What to do as a visitor

Work through these checks in order. Stop when the evidence identifies a site-specific defect; changing unrelated settings repeatedly will not repair broken page code.

  1. Check another website. Open a site you normally use. If many sites fail, the problem is probably the connection, device, browser, or network filtering rather than one page. If only one site fails, continue with the site-specific checks and contact its developer if they do not help.
  2. Change the network. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, or try a trusted alternate network. A captive portal, DNS failure, content filter, or unstable connection can block the page or a required script. If the site works on one network but not another, note that difference for the network administrator or website owner.
  3. Review VPN and privacy routing. A VPN can block a domain, alter DNS, or make a request appear to come from a region the site does not serve. Apple Support also recommends checking whether Private Relay is affecting a problem that persists on only one site. Temporarily test without the service, following your organization’s policy, and restore it after the test.
  4. Restart the device. Apple lists a restart as a basic Safari troubleshooting step. This can clear a transient network, memory, or web-view state, but it will not correct a repeatable coding defect.
  5. Confirm JavaScript is enabled in Safari. On current iPhone and iPad software, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced and check the JavaScript setting. Labels can vary by operating-system release; use the Safari settings search if the path differs. Do not enable scripts indiscriminately on untrusted sites.
  6. Clear Safari website data when appropriate. Stale cookies, cached scripts, or corrupted site storage can keep one page in a broken state after the server has changed. Apple’s Safari support guidance explains how to clear history and website data. Clearing it signs you out of sites and removes stored preferences, so treat it as a targeted troubleshooting step rather than a routine fix.
  7. Try a private window or another current browser. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that one browser is generally better. If the page works only after extensions, content blockers, or private-routing features are removed, identify which setting is interfering.
  8. Rotate the device and dismiss the keyboard. If the problem appears only in portrait, landscape, or while typing, capture that condition. A layout defect tied to orientation or keyboard height belongs to the site’s responsive implementation.
  9. Update the operating system and browser where practical. A current browser can contain compatibility fixes, but an update should not be presented as the answer to a page that fails consistently on supported versions.
  10. Report a reproducible case. Tell the site owner the URL, device model, operating-system version, browser and version, orientation, network, exact action, and any message shown. A screen recording can distinguish an unresponsive target from a loading failure.

How site owners should reproduce the failure

Capture the environment before changing code

Write down the phone or tablet model, operating-system version, browser and version, orientation, network type, VPN or privacy-routing state, and whether the page is opened in a full browser or an app web view. Record the exact URL, the action that fails, and whether the failure happens on one page or throughout the site. This turns “cannot tap” into a test case another developer can repeat.

A desktop browser resized to phone dimensions is useful for a first pass, but it does not reproduce device-specific browser chrome, the on-screen keyboard, touch dispatch, memory limits, or web-view behavior. Apple’s Responsive Design Mode can preview different widths and heights; use it alongside a real device check.

Inspect the document, scripts, and resources

Open Web Inspector and examine the DOM, computed styles, JavaScript console, network resources, and script execution. Look for a failed stylesheet, blocked font, missing module, rejected request, uncaught exception, or promise rejection that occurs before controls are initialized. A single startup error can make every button appear dead even when the HTML is present.

Compare a successful desktop session with the failing mobile session. Check response status, redirects, content type, cache headers, and whether a mobile-specific bundle is being served. If a component is loaded from another origin, inspect cross-origin policy and content-security errors. Fix the earliest meaningful error rather than hiding console output.

Inspect a real iPhone or iPad when needed

Apple documents connecting iOS and iPadOS devices for web-content inspection. For Chrome on iOS, Google documents using Safari Web Inspector and lists prerequisites that depend on the iOS and Chrome versions. Those requirements change, so verify the current instructions before setting up a test. Remote inspection is especially valuable for touch coordinates, viewport changes, web-view restrictions, and errors that do not appear in a desktop emulator.

Repair responsive layout defects

Use the actual viewport as a design constraint

Build flexible columns, wrapping navigation, and content that can shrink without forcing horizontal scrolling. Check the viewport meta configuration, then test narrow widths, intermediate tablet widths, and tall or short phone viewports. Avoid anchoring essential controls to a fixed pixel height. Recalculate positions when the visual viewport changes, including when the keyboard opens.

Test both orientations and the browser’s changing top and bottom bars. A page can pass a screenshot at one width while failing when the address bar collapses or a user zooms text. Keep text readable, allow controls to move below one another, and ensure dialogs remain reachable when the available height is reduced.

Find overlap and hit-area problems

Use the inspector’s box model and hit-testing tools to identify elements that cover controls, extend beyond their visible bounds, or have an unexpected stacking order. Check transparent overlays, loading masks, sticky headers, and transformed containers. A visible button that never receives a pointer event often has a different element above it.

Give each primary action a generous, separated touch area. Do not solve a small-target problem by making an invisible element larger if it then blocks neighboring controls. Verify that focus indicators, labels, and error messages remain visible when the keyboard is open.

Replace unsupported-feature assumptions with fallbacks

List every API and media capability required by the interaction. Feature-detect each one before use. If a capability is absent, offer a simpler path: a standard link instead of a script-only navigation, a keyboard-accessible disclosure instead of hover-only content, or a server-rendered result instead of an unavailable client API.

Keep the fallback usable, not merely an error message. A page should still communicate what happened and what the user can do next. Avoid browser sniffing as a substitute for capability detection; a browser can identify itself differently in an embedded web view while supporting the needed feature, or report a familiar name while lacking a particular implementation.

When relying on a newer API, test the browser versions your audience actually uses, including older operating-system web views and assistive technology. A compatibility table or Baseline label is a starting point, not a release guarantee for every device.

Make touch and pointer interactions reliable

Support the input methods you actually need

Review handlers for mouseover, mouseenter, mousedown, and other mouse-only assumptions. Replace hover-only disclosure with an explicit, tappable control. Where a unified model is appropriate, Pointer Events can handle mouse and touch while preserving keyboard access. Do not attach duplicate handlers that trigger an action twice when a browser emits compatibility mouse events after touch.

Preserve scrolling and gestures

Test vertical scrolling, horizontal carousels, pinch zoom, and any drag gesture. A broad preventDefault() call can cancel native scrolling and make the page feel frozen. Restrict cancellation to the gesture that truly requires it, and use appropriate touch-action rules so the browser knows which gestures the component owns.

Test targets under real conditions

Tap controls with one hand, at different zoom levels, and while the keyboard is visible. Check that adjacent links do not overlap and that a user can reach every control without a precision pointer. Include keyboard navigation and screen-reader activation; a touch fix that removes focus or semantic buttons creates a different accessibility failure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Repair media and embedded components

Isolate a failing video, animation, map, or widget from the main page. Confirm that its request succeeds, its content type is correct, and its format is supported by the target browser. Use HTML audio and video elements rather than a desktop plug-in workflow, and provide visible controls and a meaningful fallback when playback is unavailable.

Check autoplay restrictions, muted-playback requirements, user-activation rules, and whether an embedded frame is blocked by permissions or content-security policy. A media error should not prevent the surrounding article, navigation, or form from rendering.

Use a repeatable mobile test matrix

Do not compare only “desktop” and “mobile.” Record the dimensions that can change the result.

Axis Cases to include What it can reveal
Browser and version At least the browsers your audience uses, including the affected release API, CSS, media, and event differences
Operating system and web view Supported iOS/iPadOS or Android releases; full browser and in-app web view where relevant System UI, storage, permission, and rendering differences
Viewport Narrow phone, wide phone, tablet, split view, and reduced height with keyboard open Overflow, hidden controls, and dialog positioning
Orientation Portrait and landscape, including rotation during an interaction Stale measurements and breakpoint defects
Input Touch, keyboard, screen reader, and mouse or trackpad where supported Mouse-only handlers, focus loss, and target-size problems
Network Wi-Fi, cellular, slower connections, VPN or privacy routing where users report it Timeouts, blocked resources, and race conditions
Page state Fresh visit, cached visit, signed-in state, and an error or empty state Stale assets, storage bugs, and unhandled responses

For each case, test loading, primary navigation, forms, dialogs, scrolling, orientation changes, and any media or gesture. Keep a short recording of the expected and actual result. This prevents a fix for one phone from silently breaking another viewport.

When the problem is outside your control

Some failures are caused by a server outage, an expired certificate, a blocked third-party service, a regional restriction, or a network policy. Visitors can provide the environment details and wait for the site owner or administrator. Site owners should monitor failed requests, JavaScript exceptions, and deployment changes so a mobile-only regression is visible quickly.

If other sites work, clearing data and changing networks do not help, and the same action fails on a current browser, treat the issue as site-specific. The most useful report includes the exact page, timestamp, device, browser version, orientation, network, and a screen recording or console error. That information lets a developer reproduce the condition instead of guessing.

A practical decision path

  1. Can the page load? If not, compare other sites, networks, VPN or Private Relay, and browser data. Inspect server and resource failures if you own the site.
  2. Does the page load but display incorrectly? Test viewport width and height, orientation, browser chrome, keyboard state, fixed dimensions, overflow, and overlapping layers.
  3. Are controls visible but inert? Inspect console errors and event listeners, then test pointer and touch handling, target size, overlays, and hover assumptions.
  4. Does one feature fail? Isolate its resource and capability requirements, replace plug-in assumptions with standard media, and provide a fallback.
  5. Does it fail only in one browser or web view? Compare actual versions and run feature detection. Use remote inspection on the affected device before changing code.

This sequence keeps a broad complaint from turning into a random collection of settings changes. It also gives developers a concrete path from symptom to reproducible defect.
