Societe Generale strategist Albert Edwards sees a warning in the gap between the AI boom’s investment story and productivity evidence, according to a Dow Jones report republished by Tiger Brokers on October 8, 2026. His comparison is about the risk that a compelling growth narrative draws abundant capital before returns are proven—not evidence that the AI boom is a bubble or that the Asian crisis is about to repeat.

What did Albert Edwards say about AI and the Asian financial crisis?

The Dow Jones report says Edwards drew a parallel between today’s AI investment boom and the optimistic growth story surrounding Asian economies in the 1990s. The immediate prompt was a note by Apollo chief economist Torsten Slok discussing disappointing total factor productivity (TFP) readings. As the report presents it, investment in AI is evident, but the cited productivity data have not yet confirmed the gains investors expect.

Edwards’s concern, as quoted by the report, is that “too many people believed the beguiling narrative” and “lent these economies cheap, abundant capital which was misallocated.” He was referring to the Asian growth narrative; the comparison suggests a question for AI investment, not that the same lending or currency vulnerabilities are already present.

Slok described TFP as the portion of growth left after accounting for additional labor hours and machinery. When output rises without more measured labor or capital inputs, TFP rises, making it a useful proxy for efficiency and technological progress. Slok’s reported conclusion was that “the productivity payoff from AI remains a forecast, rather than an observation.” That describes what the cited aggregate data show, not proof that AI has no benefits: adoption can precede measurable economy-wide productivity gains, and TFP is neither instantaneous nor a complete measure of a technology’s value.

What caused the 1997–1998 Asian financial crisis?

The crisis was not simply a case of disappointing productivity or a popular investment story going wrong. The Federal Reserve History account, written as of November 22, 2013, dates the episode from July 1997 through December 1998 and describes currency, banking, and cross-border funding stresses.

On July 2, 1997, Thailand devalued the baht against the U.S. dollar after speculative pressure had depleted official foreign-exchange reserves. The shock spread across East Asia. Currency, equity, and property markets weakened, capital flows reversed or slowed, growth contracted, and banks came under pressure.

Why a currency shock became a regional crisis

Several vulnerabilities reinforced one another: rapid credit growth and leverage, doubtful loans, overheated property markets, current-account deficits, external debt, and heavy reliance on short-maturity foreign borrowing. Currency pegs had obscured some exchange-rate and funding risks. When currencies fell, borrowers owed more in local-currency terms on foreign debt, increasing distress and insolvency risks. Creditor pullbacks then spread pressure to economies thought to share similar vulnerabilities. International support and domestic policy changes helped stabilize affected economies and contributed to recovery.

Those mechanisms matter to the analogy. A technology valuation decline would not, by itself, be the same event as a regional crisis involving reserve pressure, currency exposure, banks, and foreign-currency debt.

Does weak productivity data mean AI is a bubble?

No. The Dow Jones report presents Slok’s concern that the productivity payoff has not yet shown up in the cited TFP readings, while also reporting Edwards’s acknowledgment that it may be too early for AI’s benefits to appear in the data. The original Apollo note and underlying statistical series were not directly reviewed for that report, so the present-day productivity claim should be understood as attributed commentary rather than an independently established measurement here.

The report also says Edwards cited economist Rob Parenteau’s view that net business investment was moving sideways while gross investment rose. Net investment accounts for depreciation; gross investment does not. If that reported pattern holds, it would raise a question about how much new productive capacity remains after replacing worn-out capital. But the underlying data series was not reviewed, so this is not a verified finding about current investment.

Even weak aggregate productivity readings would not settle whether particular firms or industries are gaining from AI. Nor do they show whether future gains will justify the money spent. The useful test is whether realized efficiency and cash flows eventually support the scale of investment and valuations—not whether one lagging aggregate measure has already delivered a verdict.

How do current comparisons with past technology booms differ?

Historical comparisons change with the period and assets selected. Two 2026 analyses offer context, but neither establishes that the AI market is repeating a particular past episode.

Amundi Investment Institute, 2026 Broad S&P 500 cumulative returns for 1995–1997 were approximately 39.5 percentage points higher than for 2023–2025. Amundi says its TMT-versus-AI portfolio comparison looks more like the 1997–1999 speculative-bubble phase. It also describes the AI-stock rise as steadier, with more short-term corrections than late-1990s TMT stocks. The result depends on the portfolios and periods chosen.
European Central Bank, August 17, 2026 The ECB says technology booms can end in valuation corrections under both rational and behavioral explanations, but their timing cannot be known in advance. Its estimate of around €440 billion refers specifically to euro-area household exposure to U.S. technology equities, based on Q3 2025 holdings data and the authors’ calculations—not global AI exposure. The blog identifies fund redemptions as one possible channel for amplifying a correction.
Man Group, September 1, 2026 The firm says its proprietary MacroScope model found the then-current landscape most similar to May 1997. Man Group explicitly says conditions are not an exact replica and characterizes its stance as cautious pessimism rather than bearishness. This is the firm’s model-based commentary, not a forecast or independent validation of Edwards’s argument.

What should investors examine beyond the analogy?

The comparison is most useful as a checklist of questions about returns, financing, and how stress could spread. The historical crisis supplies examples of vulnerabilities; it does not establish that they exist in today’s AI investment cycle.

  • Productivity and cash flows: Are firms producing more or operating more efficiently, and are those gains becoming visible in output and financial results? Keep the limits of aggregate TFP in mind.
  • Funding and refinancing: Is expansion financed from retained cash, equity, or debt? For debt, examine maturity, currency exposure, and refinancing needs. The Asian crisis shows why short-term foreign borrowing and currency mismatches can intensify a shock; do not assume those conditions apply to AI infrastructure.
  • Investment after depreciation: Compare gross spending with investment net of depreciation. Edwards’s reported reference to Parenteau’s view is a reason to ask the question, not a verified answer about current investment.
  • Valuation concentration and exposure: Ask which firms, funds, or investors carry the risk, and whether the comparison uses a broad index or technology-focused portfolios. The Amundi results show how the historical resemblance can change with that choice.
  • Transmission channels: Consider whether losses could affect lenders, counterparties, funds, or cross-border funding. The Asian crisis spread through currency, banking, and creditor stresses; the ECB separately discusses fund redemptions as one possible channel for a technology-equity correction.
  • Timing: Identify what could prompt repricing, but do not treat historical resemblance or a model’s closest match as a reliable calendar for a shock. The ECB says correction timing cannot be known in advance.

What the comparison does—and does not—tell us

Edwards’s analogy is a prompt to scrutinize whether investment and valuations are being matched by realized productivity and returns, and how that spending is financed. The 1997 crisis demonstrates how leverage, short-term foreign borrowing, currency exposure, and contagion can turn vulnerabilities into a broader financial event. The cited TFP concern and the analogy do not establish that AI is a bubble, that those crisis mechanisms are present today, or that a correction is imminent.
