Survival games often enter Early Access because their open-ended systems can benefit from player feedback while developers continue building—and because selling a playable version can help a studio build an audience and fund further work. But “every” is an impression, not a measured fact: the available evidence does not show that survival games use Early Access more often than other genres.
Why Early Access fits survival games
Survival games commonly combine resource gathering, crafting, base-building, exploration, progression, and sometimes co-op or PvP. Those systems interact: a change to resource scarcity, for example, can affect crafting, pacing, and difficulty. Releasing a playable sandbox while it is still developing lets a team see how players actually use those systems and adjust priorities based on feedback.
That makes the format a plausible fit for the genre, not a survival-only model. The evidence available does not establish that survival games are statistically more likely than other games to launch in Early Access.

One example: Subsistence
The Subsistence Steam page describes an evolving sandbox with base-building, crafting, farming, animal husbandry, and AI hunters. Its solo developer said the goal was to involve more players and continue shaping the game through their feedback. The page also describes the project as beginning in spare time and invites players interested in participating in development. That is one developer’s explanation, not a universal account of why survival games use Early Access.

Building with a community
In a December 2025 interview about Prologue, PlayerUnknown Productions founder Brendan Greene described Early Access as a development period for building with the community, rather than a label for a nearly finished game that needs only balance work. That is his view of the approach, not a platform-wide definition. PC Gamer’s interview with Brendan Greene quotes him describing Early Access as “the oven.”
Why developers choose Early Access
Feedback and iteration
Steam describes Early Access as a way for people to play games while they progress toward full release. In practice, that can give developers a channel for observing what players find engaging, confusing, too slow, or broken. A 2017 study of Steam Early Access games found more discussion activity during Early Access than after games left it, and more frequent updates during Early Access in the study’s sample. Discussion is not automatically useful design feedback, but it can help teams identify issues and decide what to work on.

Selling a playable build can bring in revenue while work continues, which may help a small team pay for additional development. It is not dependable financing, however. The 2017 study notes that Early Access does not guarantee sufficient funds to continue and describes a case in which development ended before promised features were delivered. That is a real risk, not proof that projects inevitably fail or that the model is inherently a cash grab.

Hinterland has described a commercial and strategic reason for using the format for its next survival game: the studio said it wanted to maximize the launch’s impact and the game’s potential success to support its ongoing independence. That is the studio’s stated rationale, not evidence that every developer has the same motive. Read Hinterland’s announcement.
Audience-building and launch visibility
Early Access can make a game’s release the start of a longer relationship with players rather than a single finished-product event. A team can communicate progress, build an audience, and learn from discussion over time. The trade-off is ongoing work outside development itself: in a 2026 interview about the long-running survival game Novus, solo developer Martin Markus Mastný described handling public relations, sales, community questions, and bugs after the Early Access release. His experience is an individual example; the workload varies by project and team.

Releasing available content before the whole plan is ready
Early Access can also let a studio put a playable portion of a project in front of customers before the entire planned game is complete. In a discussion of Arma 3, Bohemia Interactive cited business considerations and positive Alpha and Beta reception as reasons to release available content before the campaign was ready. The studio framed the main release as the beginning of a longer-lived platform for additions, fixes, improvements, and user-created content. This is a related staged-release rationale, not a claim about every survival game.
What the numbers do—and do not—show
A peer-reviewed 2017 study by Dai, Teh, and Lo provides historical context for Steam as a whole. In the study’s dataset, 15% of Steam games used the Early Access model. That figure is platform-wide, historical, and not a current estimate or a statistic about survival games. The authors also found the model tended to appeal to individuals or small studios. Read the study.

In the same study, 89% of the Early Access games examined had an equally or more positive review rate during Early Access than after leaving it. This does not show that Early Access makes games better. The authors note that Early Access buyers may be more tolerant of unfinished products, or that developers may be effective at keeping their audiences satisfied. Review results do not establish universal quality or success.
No representative, current count or genre-to-genre comparison establishes what share of survival games use Early Access, whether that share exceeds other genres, or whether it is rising. It is therefore more accurate to say the format is conspicuous in survival games than to say they are the genre most likely to use it.
How to judge an Early Access survival game before buying
Steam’s guidance emphasizes evaluating the game that exists now and reading the developer’s explanation of what remains. The Early Access label alone is not a promise that a project will be completed. Steam’s Early Access documentation and Early Access FAQ provide the platform’s guidance.
- Assess the current build: Would the playable content be worth its current price to you if development stopped today?
- Check what exists and what is planned: Does the store page distinguish implemented features from future intentions?
- Look at update communication: Are development announcements and updates recent? Steam says it adds a store-page notice after more than 12 months without a qualifying update or update announcement; platform rules can change.
- Read the plan, not just the label: Does the developer explain its priorities and communicate changes clearly?
- Match the scope to your expectations: For a survival game, check whether the current build supports the solo, co-op, or PvP play you want, and whether stability and content are adequate for you.
Early Access can be a practical way to develop a systems-heavy game in public, gather feedback, build an audience, and earn revenue before the full plan is complete. It also transfers some uncertainty to players: the game may change substantially, and neither funding nor promised features are guaranteed.
