Small and midsize businesses are adopting AI, but adoption is not the same as embedding it in day-to-day operations. OECD figures show lower use among smaller firms than large ones, while UK data points to gaps in integration and written policies. For managed service providers (MSPs), that creates an advisory opportunity: help clients choose practical uses, connect tools to workflows, and manage security and governance. The evidence indicates rising interest, not that every SMB needs an MSP or that AI services already generate substantial MSP revenue.

How are small businesses adopting AI?

The answer depends on what counts as adoption. A firm may report using an AI tool, pay for an AI service, or integrate AI into a core business function. Those measures describe different levels of use and come from different populations, so their percentages should not be treated as directly comparable.

OECD data shows a size gap

Across OECD countries, 11.9% of firms with 10–49 employees and 20.4% of firms with 50–249 employees used AI in 2024 or the most recent available year, compared with 40% of firms with 250 or more employees. The OECD cautions that country coverage and definitions can affect comparisons across countries and time. OECD report

US payment data captures paid use, not every experiment

Using de-identified Chase Business Banking transaction data, the JPMorgan Chase Institute estimated that 17.7% of US small businesses paid for AI services by the end of 2025. That is close to the Census Bureau Business Trends and Outlook Survey’s 17.8% estimate for the same period, but the approaches and definitions differ. Transaction data will not capture use of free tools in the same way as a survey asking about AI use. In the same payment series, 12.03% paid for generative AI services and 9.44% paid for three or more AI services. These figures indicate diversification among businesses paying for AI; they do not establish how deeply those services were integrated into operations. JPMorgan Chase Institute

UK survey results use a different population

The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 2026 Business Data Survey reported AI use among 51% of small businesses with 10–49 employees and 58% of medium businesses with 50–249 employees. Its population comprises businesses handling digitised data. The department warns that differences in definitions, tasks, and roles make overall adoption estimates difficult to compare with other surveys. These UK figures therefore should not be read as a contradiction of the OECD or US transaction-data estimates. UK Business Data Survey 2026

Why does AI use not always mean operational adoption?

Trying a standalone assistant or paying for a service is a lower bar than making AI part of a business process, connecting it to existing systems, and setting rules for responsible use. An adoption rate can rise while deeper implementation remains uncommon.

In the OECD’s 2024 G7 comparison, AI use in core business functions ranged from 1.9% in Japan to 6.1% in the United States. That narrower measure helps explain how broader reports of AI use can coexist with limited integration into central operations. OECD report

The UK survey offers more detail about that implementation gap. Among AI-using small businesses, 31% had integrated AI into existing systems; among AI-using microbusinesses, the figure was 27%. Across AI-using businesses overall, 17% reported having an AI policy or guidelines, while 5% had a formal written policy. These results suggest that reported use is more common than system integration or formal governance in that survey population. UK Business Data Survey 2026

What does the evidence say about MSP demand?

MSPs can help with the practical work between choosing an AI tool and using it reliably in a business workflow. But current provider surveys should be read as evidence of industry sentiment and activity, not as a representative measure of what SMB customers need or proof that advisory services deliver better outcomes.

Providers report demand, but limited realized revenue

Kaseya’s 2026 survey of more than 1,000 MSPs worldwide found that 48% ranked AI and automation as the top client need for 2026. The same provider survey found that 13% said AI services were already a meaningful revenue source. Separately, 53% of surveyed MSPs said they used AI internally for tasks such as ticketing, patching, and monitoring. These figures distinguish perceived client demand and providers’ own use from revenue already realized; they are not results from an SMB customer survey. Kaseya announcement

The managed intelligence framing is a vendor perspective

Pax8’s Q2 2026 survey sampled 402 US small-business technology decision-makers at organizations with 5–499 employees and reported a total-sample margin of error of ±4.9 percentage points. Pax8 CEO Scott Chasin described the opportunity this way: “Most SMBs can’t build that alone. That’s the role of a managed intelligence provider (MIP): a technology partner who deploys AI, governs it, and keeps it running securely alongside their people.” This is a vendor CEO’s framing of a potential role, not independent evidence that every SMB needs such a provider. What can an MSP do to help an SMB use AI securely?

A useful advisory role is specific and operational, rather than simply recommending a tool. Depending on the client’s needs and capabilities, an MSP can help:

  • Identify suitable workflows. Find a defined, repeatable task where AI could help, and assess the expected value and risk before adopting a tool.
  • Connect tools to existing systems. Plan integration with the client’s current software and processes rather than leaving AI as an isolated experiment.
  • Set governance practices. Help document acceptable uses, responsibilities, and review steps, with formal written policies where appropriate to the business.
  • Address security and ongoing operations. Establish how AI-enabled tools are configured, monitored, and maintained alongside the client’s existing technology.

These are practical areas for an MSP or similar technology partner to support. The available sources do not establish that MSP advice causes higher adoption or better business outcomes, so clients should judge the engagement by its scope, controls, and results rather than by the label attached to the provider.

Does every small business need an MSP to implement AI?

No. The evidence supports a growing advisory opportunity, not a universal requirement. A business with a narrow, low-risk use case and the expertise to manage it may not need an outside provider. An MSP may be more useful when integration, security, governance, or continuing technical support exceeds the client’s internal capacity. The right question is whether the provider can address a specific business need and clearly explain how the work will be managed.
