Short answer: A smart TV needs internet access for services that run online—streaming catalogs, app downloads, account features, voice and web search, recommendations, casting and software updates. It does not necessarily need internet to act as a display. With a compatible tuner and antenna, it may receive over-the-air channels; a cable or satellite receiver, game console, disc player, computer or other HDMI source can also continue to work. The exact offline behavior depends on the model, platform, software version and region.
What “smart TV” and “internet access” actually mean
“Smart” describes the television’s built-in connected platform, not a requirement that every picture must arrive through the internet. The screen, speakers, tuner and physical inputs can function separately from the network software.
Internet access lets the TV contact services hosted elsewhere. Those services include on-demand and live streaming, an app store, account authentication, web pages, voice and content search, cloud-based recommendations, casting and firmware delivery. A television can reach its network through Wi‑Fi or a wired Ethernet connection; Wi‑Fi is not the only form of internet access.

LG describes these connected capabilities as examples of what its smart televisions can provide, but a feature listed for one manufacturer or model is not a guarantee for every set. Treat the exact model’s manual and support page as the final authority.

What still works when the TV is offline
Over-the-air antenna channels
If the television has a tuner compatible with the broadcast standard and channels used in your area, an antenna can deliver free over-the-air television without an internet connection. Google’s Basic Mode documentation lists antenna and tuner viewing, and LG says regular channels remain available through an antenna or cable box.
Reception is a separate issue from internet access. You need a suitable indoor or outdoor antenna, a coaxial connection and enough signal at your location. A set may have a tuner yet fail to find channels if the local standard, channel band or signal conditions are incompatible. Check the model specifications and local broadcast listings before buying an antenna.
Cable and satellite receivers
A cable or satellite set-top box can feed the TV through HDMI or another supported input. The receiver handles channel access; the television only displays its output. Google and TCL both list cable and satellite as usable sources in their reduced or basic modes.
The receiver’s own online functions are a separate matter. On-demand catalogs, interactive guides or account services provided by the box may still need an internet or provider connection even when the television itself is disconnected.

HDMI and other physical inputs
A console, Blu-ray or DVD player, computer, camera, sound-system receiver or other source can continue to send video through HDMI. Google, TCL, Samsung and Roku document external-input use in applicable offline or reduced modes. Select the corresponding HDMI, composite or antenna input with the remote as usual.
The source must be powered and operating. A game console can display locally stored games offline, for example, while its multiplayer, store, cloud-save or streaming features still require a connection. An HDMI cable is only necessary when the source is not already connected; unplugging the TV from the network does not by itself require a new cable.
Limited built-in functions
Some platforms retain a small set of pre-installed or basic-TV functions. TCL says its Basic TV Mode provides access to a limited selection of pre-installed apps. That statement does not mean those apps can stream without a connection, nor does it apply to every brand or model. The practical test is whether the function uses local data or must fetch an account, catalog or video from the internet.
What usually stops working offline
- Built-in streaming: Services cannot fetch a live channel or on-demand program when the TV has no route to the service.
- App installation and updates: An app store cannot download new software, and existing apps may become unusable when they require a newer version or online sign-in.
- Accounts and cloud libraries: Account login, purchased libraries and synchronized profiles generally need the provider’s servers.
- Web and content search: Browser pages, online results and catalog search are unavailable. Google Basic Mode removes app search, app installation, genre clusters and Assistant content search.
- Voice and assistant features: Voice recognition, Assistant commands and cloud-based smart-home control commonly stop when the platform cannot reach its service.
- Casting and mirroring features that depend on a network: A phone or computer may no longer discover the TV. Some forms of local wired connection can behave differently, so consult the model’s documentation rather than assuming every mirroring method is equivalent.
- Personalized recommendations: Home-screen suggestions and watch-history synchronization rely on account and cloud data.
Samsung states that a Samsung Account is required for network-based smart services such as streaming apps and other connected features. Google, TCL and Roku describe their own reductions in account, app, casting, voice and streaming access. These are platform-specific examples, not a universal checklist.

Software and security updates are the main long-term trade-off
A disconnected television cannot normally retrieve firmware, app or security updates. TCL states: “Without internet access, your TV won’t receive important security or software updates.” That can leave bugs uncorrected, prevent newer apps from running and extend the time a known security issue remains on the set.
Some manufacturers support an update downloaded on another device and installed by USB, while others require the TV to contact their servers directly. Availability, file requirements and supported versions vary. Before keeping a TV offline permanently, look up its manual for an approved offline-update method; do not install firmware intended for a different model or region.
Setup rules differ by platform
The most important distinction is between using a configured TV offline and completing first-time setup without internet. A set that works as an HDMI display after setup may still block you at the initial activation screen.
| Platform or example | Offline setup or use documented | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google TV on supported devices | Basic Mode can be selected during first setup without a Google Account and/or internet; antenna, tuner, cable, satellite and other inputs remain available. | Basic Mode is not offered on every device. It removes account features, Play Library access, app search and installation, genre clusters and Assistant content search. |
| TCL Google TV | Basic TV Mode is offered during setup for local TV and connected inputs. | After completing full Google TV setup, returning to Basic Mode requires a factory reset. App downloads, casting, Google Account use and Assistant search/control are lost in Basic Mode. |
| Samsung televisions | On tuner-equipped models, terrestrial TV and HDMI devices remain usable without an account login. | Samsung says network smart services, including streaming apps, require a Samsung Account. |
| Roku-branded TVs | Some systems support an unlinked mode for antenna or cable live TV and HDMI devices after configuration. | Roku streaming services and Streaming Store apps are unavailable in unlinked mode. Internet is required to complete setup, and “Connect to the Internet Later” is not offered on every Roku TV system. |
Brand-level descriptions cannot promise identical behavior for every model, country or software revision. Check the exact model number before you factory-reset a working television or plan a purchase around offline use.

How to set up and use a TV with little or no internet
Before you disconnect
- Write down the full model number, software version and region shown in Settings. These details determine tuner standards and available setup modes.
- List the sources you intend to use: antenna, cable/satellite box, console, disc player or computer. Confirm that each uses an input the TV actually has.
- Read the model’s setup instructions for “Basic,” “TV only,” “unlinked” or similar wording. Note whether the choice is available only during first setup and whether changing it later requires a factory reset.
- Install pending firmware updates while the TV is connected, if you are comfortable doing so. Record the date and version so you know what will remain fixed after disconnection.
Connect local sources
- Attach the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV’s antenna or RF input, or connect the cable/satellite receiver to an available HDMI input.
- Connect consoles, disc players and computers to labeled HDMI inputs. Turn on each source and set it to output a resolution the TV supports.
- Use the remote’s Input or Source control to verify every device. If a source is missing, check power, the selected input and the cable before troubleshooting the network.
Choose the appropriate setup mode
- During first setup, select the platform’s Basic TV, Basic Mode or equivalent option when it is offered and you do not want an account or internet connection.
- If the wizard insists on a network, look for a clearly documented skip, unlinked or later option. Do not enter false account details; they can create activation problems.
- For a television already configured in full smart mode, disconnect Ethernet and forget or disable the Wi‑Fi network. Expect online tiles and apps to show errors while physical inputs continue to work.
- On systems that require a reset to change modes, back up settings and understand that a factory reset erases accounts, channel scans and preferences before proceeding.
Scan and verify broadcast channels
- Open the TV’s channel or tuner settings and choose the antenna/terrestrial option rather than cable if you are using an antenna.
- Run an automatic channel scan. Reception can change with antenna position, weather and local interference, so move the antenna and scan again if expected stations are absent.
- Save the results, then test channel changing with the TV offline. A successful scan confirms reception at that moment; it does not provide internet streaming.
How to decide whether a particular TV suits offline use
| Question | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Can first setup finish offline? | A TV may be useful later yet unusable until activation. | Exact model manual; availability of Basic, TV-only or unlinked mode. |
| Does it have the right tuner? | A tuner alone does not guarantee local-channel compatibility. | Broadcast standard, region, antenna connector and supported channel bands. |
| Are the needed inputs present? | Your console or receiver must match the TV’s physical ports. | HDMI count and version, antenna/RF input and any legacy connectors. |
| What remains in offline mode? | “App installed” does not mean “video playable offline.” | Retained menus, local playback, channel guide behavior and account requirements. |
| Can you change modes later? | Some choices are difficult to reverse. | Whether a factory reset is required and what data it erases. |
| How are updates delivered? | Offline use can freeze software and security fixes. | Internet requirement, USB update support and update-file rules. |
Common mistakes and fixes
Confusing Wi‑Fi with all connectivity
A TV can be online through Ethernet, while HDMI and antenna use no internet at all. If streaming fails over Wi‑Fi, test the wired connection or router; if local video fails, inspect the input and source instead.
Expecting an external streaming device to bypass internet
An HDMI streaming device is an alternative way to run apps, not an offline workaround. The device itself needs internet to retrieve streams, authenticate accounts and download its software.
Assuming an offline app can play any saved program
Most TV apps are thin clients that fetch video and licenses from a service. An app icon may remain visible while every title fails to load. Local files played from a connected computer or supported USB device are a different function.
Factory-resetting without checking the consequence
On TCL Google TV, returning from full setup to Basic TV Mode requires a factory reset. A reset can erase channel scans, parental controls, picture settings and accounts. Confirm the model’s procedure and write down settings first.

Ignoring the source device’s own network needs
Disconnecting the TV does not make online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, receiver catalogs or computer streaming work offline. Diagnose the television and the source as two separate systems.
Practical configurations for different needs
Broadcast-only household
Choose a tuner-equipped model with a compatible indoor or outdoor antenna. Complete a supported basic setup, scan channels and keep the TV disconnected. Plan occasional reconnection or an approved USB procedure for firmware updates.
Console and disc-player setup
Connect each device by HDMI and use the TV as a monitor with speakers. Internet is optional for locally stored games and discs, but online play, digital stores, streaming apps and cloud features remain dependent on the source device’s connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCable or satellite subscriber
Connect the provider’s receiver and use its remote for channels. The TV can remain offline, although provider guides, on-demand content and receiver updates may still need a separate connection.
Occasional streaming user
Keep the TV online only when you need streaming, app installation or updates, then disconnect it for local viewing. This avoids permanently losing update access while preserving an offline mode for everyday use.
Answers to the two questions people usually ask
Does a smart TV need Wi‑Fi?
No. Wi‑Fi is one method of reaching internet services; Ethernet is another. Neither is required for an antenna, cable/satellite receiver or HDMI source. Internet access is required only for the connected features that contact online services.
Do smart TVs work without internet?
Usually, yes, as displays for compatible antenna, cable, satellite and physical-input sources. What you lose is the connected layer: built-in streaming, app downloads, accounts, voice and web search, recommendations, casting and online updates. Setup restrictions and the exact offline feature set vary by model, region and software version.
