When household downloads or uploads make video calls choppy, the problem may be latency under load rather than a lack of peak bandwidth. Smart Queue Management (SQM) deliberately limits traffic to a little below the connection’s bottleneck rate, helping keep queues from growing too long. The trade-off is lower maximum throughput in exchange for a more responsive connection.
Why giving up speed can improve video calls
A connection can have plenty of headline bandwidth and still feel sluggish when someone is downloading or uploading large files. Those transfers can build queues at the bottleneck, delaying other packets. OpenWrt notes that “Bufferbloat is most evident when a connection is heavily loaded with downloads or uploads.” That delay—latency under load—can affect interactive traffic such as video chat.
SQM manages those queues and shapes traffic so bulk transfers are less likely to dominate the connection. It generally does this by setting a traffic rate below the actual bottleneck. The limit sacrifices some peak throughput, but can improve responsiveness while the connection is busy. This is a technical explanation for why a household might see better calls after slowing its connection; it does not establish the results of any particular home experiment.
How to configure SQM and find a useful rate
-
Measure the connection with SQM disabled. Test download and upload rates under representative conditions. Record both, since the upload side can also become congested.

Enable SQM and choose a queue discipline. OpenWrt’s guide names CAKE and fq_codel as options; its example configuration uses CAKE.
-
Start below the measured rates. OpenWrt gives 90% of measured rates as an example starting point, not a universal optimum. Enter shaping rates below the measured download and upload rates.

Retest under load. Compare download and upload throughput as well as latency during loaded download and upload tests. Raise the shaping rates gradually until latency under load returns, then back off slightly.

The useful setting depends on the connection’s behavior and access technology, link-layer overhead, and the router’s processing capacity. A rate that works on one line or router may not work on another. Follow the OpenWrt SQM guide for the configuration details and considerations.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What one published before-and-after example shows
OpenWrt’s wiki describes an individual example on a DOCSIS cable connection with 500/35 Mbit service. The user selected CAKE at 90% of baseline speed-test values. The reported results were:
| Measure | Without SQM | With SQM |
|---|---|---|
| Download latency under load | +18 ms | +0 ms |
| Upload latency under load | +38 ms | +0 ms |
| Throughput | 532/37 Mbit | 495/28 Mbit |
These are the figures reported for that one setup, not a guarantee, population statistic, or measured result for every household. The example illustrates the trade-off: throughput fell while the reported loaded latency improved. See the OpenWrt SQM wiki for the example and its context.

When the router is the limiting factor
SQM runs on the router’s CPU, and a slower device may not keep up with the full internet bandwidth. OpenWrt explicitly warns that “SQM is performed on the CPU, as such slower devices may be unable to keep up with your full internet bandwidth.” If the router cannot sustain the configured rate, reducing congestion may come at a larger throughput cost than expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore replacing equipment, check whether the existing router can run SQM at a useful rate. If it cannot, look for a device with verified OpenWrt support and enough CPU throughput for your connection. No particular router model is established here as tested or recommended. When assessing a device or configuration, check throughput, loaded latency in both directions, and whether the router can sustain the target rate.

What this does—and does not—prove about home calls
Queue management provides a plausible mechanism for better video calls during busy periods, but results vary with the connection, router, rates, and configuration. The OpenWrt example is a separate setup; it does not verify a specific household’s before-and-after call experience. The practical test is whether SQM reduces latency during the downloads and uploads that tend to coincide with call problems, while leaving enough throughput for the household’s needs.
