SEO is not dead. It is still the foundation for appearing in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. What has changed is the definition of success: a ranking is only one opportunity to be seen, cited, trusted and ultimately chosen. Google may answer a question on the results page, so the winning strategy combines sound technical SEO with original expertise and measurement tied to qualified engagement and business results.
SEO still determines whether Google can find and use your site
Google says its generative Search features are rooted in the same core ranking and quality systems as ordinary results. Its 2025 Search Central guidance answers the question “Is SEO still relevant for generative AI search?” with “In short, yes!” That means the basics remain prerequisites, not optional legacy work.
- Allow search crawlers to access important pages and resources.
- Make pages eligible for indexing and keep canonical signals clear.
- Put essential facts in accessible text rather than hiding them only in images or scripts.
- Use descriptive headings and logical internal links so people and systems can understand the site.
- Maintain good page experience and mobile usability.
- Keep structured data, product feeds, and Business Profile information accurate when those features apply.
Google says there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond eligibility for normal Search snippets. A technically blocked, thin or confusing page cannot become useful merely because an AI feature exists.

Traditional results mainly offered a list of links. AI Overviews and AI Mode add an answer layer that can synthesize information before a visitor opens a page. Google describes these features as handling more complex questions that might previously have required several searches or follow-ups, while prominently providing links for further learning.
#1 Best Overall
The systems retrieve information from Google’s index and can fan out a request into related subtopics. That can expose a site to a broader set of supporting searches and a more diverse collection of links. It can also satisfy a quick factual need without a click. A page may therefore gain visibility, citation or consideration even when its click count does not rise.
This is why “I rank, but receive fewer visits” has no single explanation. Some searches now end in the answer interface; other clicks move between a different mix of sites. Google Search vice president Liz Reid wrote in 2025 that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year,” while also describing traffic shifts among sites. That is Google’s directional finding from its own data, not a universal industry benchmark.
Why fewer clicks can still produce better opportunities
When a result page resolves a basic question, the remaining visitors are more likely to need evidence, implementation help, comparison or a transaction. Reid also said people are increasingly likely to click web content that helps them learn more, including an in-depth review, an original post, a unique perspective or a thoughtful first-person analysis.

Commodity pages are vulnerable because an AI summary can replace the reason to visit them. A page with original measurements, a transparent method, expert interpretation, a useful tool or a genuinely different point of view gives the reader a reason to continue. The strategic goal is not to force a click on every impression; it is to earn the click that matters and to be remembered when no click occurs.
What Google says you do not need for AI visibility
Google’s published guidance rejects several popular “AI SEO” shortcuts. These statements describe Google Search; other answer systems may behave differently.
| Common claim | Google’s stated position | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| A special AI schema or markup is required | No additional AI markup is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. | Use supported structured data accurately for the normal Search features it represents. |

Keep crawl directives, sitemaps and page content correct. |
| Pages must be split into a prescribed chunk size | No forced chunking format or ideal page length is specified. | Organize information into headings and sections that make sense to readers. |
| Every query must be repeated as an exact long-tail phrase | Google can understand related wording and synonyms. | Answer the underlying need comprehensively and naturally. |
| Manufactured mentions create authority | Google says it does not reward inauthentic web mentions. | Earn references through useful work, transparent sourcing and real expertise. |
The durable strategy: SEO plus original authority
1. Start with a problem only your audience can describe
Interview customers, study support questions and identify decisions that generic pages leave unresolved. Define the audience, the situation and the action the reader needs to take. A page built around a real problem has a clearer purpose than one assembled from keywords.
Rank #3
2. Add evidence that cannot be copied from a search summary
Use first-hand observations, original data, documented procedures, examples, calculations, expert commentary or clearly labeled case experience. Explain how information was obtained and where uncertainty remains. A point of view is valuable when the reader can see the reasoning behind it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Make the page easy to quote and easy to use
Put key claims in crawlable text, use specific headings, link to supporting references and provide images or video when they clarify a process. Keep navigation predictable. If a reader lands after seeing an AI citation, the page should answer the cited question quickly before offering deeper detail.
4. Build recognizable trust signals
Use consistent author names and biographies, disclose relevant expertise, date meaningful updates and distinguish reporting from opinion. Cite primary material where possible. Avoid publishing large volumes of lightly edited pages whose main purpose is to occupy more query variations.
Rank #4
5. Design the post-answer journey
After the direct answer, offer the next useful step: a comparison, worked example, calculator, checklist, implementation guide or clearly explained purchase or contact path. This is the value an answer box cannot fully provide.
Measure what happens after the ranking
Keep rankings and impressions because they reveal discoverability, but do not make position the whole success definition. A practical measurement set connects Search visibility to engagement and outcomes.
| Measure | What it tells you | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console impressions and appearances | Whether pages are being shown for relevant searches and features. | Are we visible for the problems we intend to solve? |
| Qualified clicks | Visits from people whose query and behavior fit the page’s purpose. | Do visitors reach the right content, rather than merely increasing sessions? |
| Engagement and time on site | Whether the page helps users continue, read, compare or complete a task. | Do visitors find enough value to stay or move to the next step? |
| Conversions | Direct outcomes such as a signup, inquiry, sale or completed action. | Which pages assist or produce the result the organization needs? |
| Assisted outcomes | Influence that occurs before the final conversion channel. | Did Search introduce or educate someone who converted later? |
| Brand and answer-surface visibility | Whether the organization is cited or represented when users receive an answer. | Is the description accurate, and does it lead to the right next step? |
Compare these measures by topic, page type and time period. A ranking increase that attracts irrelevant visits may be less valuable than stable visibility that produces qualified leads. Conversely, a click decline on a simple fact page may reflect successful answer delivery rather than a content failure.

| Approach | Discoverability | Answer inclusion | Post-click value | Conversion potential | Effort and risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional SEO-only program | Strong technical foundation and classic-result eligibility. | Possible, but limited when pages offer only commodity wording. | Weak if the visitor can get the same information anywhere. | Unreliable when intent and differentiation are unclear. | Moderate effort; risk of producing interchangeable pages. |
| SEO plus original authority | Retains the technical foundation. | Better evidence and distinct perspectives give systems useful material to cite. | Strong: examples, tools and expertise justify continued attention. | Better alignment with qualified engagement and trust. | Higher editorial effort; requires real expertise and governance. |
| AI-search “hack” program | May neglect crawling, indexing and quality fundamentals. | Promises special files, formatting or manufactured mentions that Google does not require. | Often thin or confusing once a person visits. | Unproven and exposed to policy or reputation problems. | Potentially fast to produce, but high editorial and durability risk. |
Do not treat an AI answer as infallible
Google has documented failure modes for AI Overviews, including query misinterpretation, missed language nuance, information gaps, satire and misleading user-generated content. In May 2024, Google said it added query restrictions, improved detection of nonsensical requests and limits on misleading user-generated material. Its report that fewer than one in every 7 million unique queries showing AI Overviews contained a content-policy violation is a scoped policy figure, not a general accuracy rate.
For medical, legal, financial, safety or other high-stakes subjects, readers should verify the answer against the linked sources and authoritative material. Publishers should periodically inspect how important pages are summarized and whether names, qualifications, prices or instructions are being distorted.
Controls when a preview is wrong or inappropriate
Google documents publisher controls including nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Choose the narrowest control that fits the problem: limit a particular passage when possible, restrict the snippet when a preview is misleading, or prevent indexing only when the page should not appear in Search at all. These controls affect how Google can display content; they do not replace fixing inaccurate source material.

A practical operating loop
- Find the unmet need: map a specific audience problem, its stakes and the decision that follows.
- Audit eligibility: check crawling, indexing, canonicalization, internal links, page experience and visible text.
- Publish the distinctive answer: add evidence, first-hand perspective, transparent sourcing and a clear author.
- Improve the next step: include examples, comparisons, tools or actions that require more than a short summary.
- Measure outcomes: review impressions, appearances, qualified clicks, engagement, conversions and assisted results alongside rankings.
- Review representation: inspect AI answers for omissions or factual drift, then correct the page or apply an appropriate display control.
Google says Search sends “billions of clicks” to the web every day, but it does not publish a more precise daily number in that statement. The opportunity is therefore not to abandon SEO or to chase an unverified technical trick. It is to keep the foundation that makes content discoverable and invest more heavily in work that deserves a reader’s time after an answer has already appeared.
