Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Use GitLab.com if you want to start coding immediately without running infrastructure. Choose GitLab Self-Managed on a VPS when control over data location, networking, identity, software configuration, or isolation is worth taking responsibility for installation, upgrades, security, backups, and recovery. A VPS can be a practical home for GitLab, but it is not a shortcut around operations: GitLab’s current single-node guidance starts at 8 vCPUs, and storage, CI concurrency, repository size, and request volume can push requirements higher.
GitLab.com and a VPS change who operates the service
GitLab describes GitLab.com as a software-as-a-service product: you create an account and use it without installing anything. GitLab Self-Managed is software that you install, administer, and maintain yourself. Those definitions are more important than the server brand or monthly invoice because they determine who responds when an upgrade fails, a disk fills, or a repository must be restored.
GitLab’s own wording is direct: “You don’t need to install anything to use GitLab.com, you only need to create a user account and start using GitLab straight away.” For the self-managed product, GitLab says: “Install, administer, and maintain your own GitLab instance.” Read the current subscription distinction at GitLab’s subscription guide.
| Decision area | GitLab.com | GitLab Self-Managed on a VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Create an account and configure projects. | Provision a Linux VM, install GitLab, configure DNS, TLS, email, storage, users, and runners. |
| Upgrades and patches | GitLab operates the service. | Your team schedules, tests, and performs operating-system and GitLab upgrades. |
| Incident response | GitLab handles the underlying service; you still support your projects and users. | You investigate capacity, networking, disks, database, Redis, Sidekiq, runner, and application failures. |
| Data and network control | Use GitLab’s hosted environment and available regional controls. | Choose the VPS region, private networks, firewall rules, identity integration, and access paths that your provider supports. |
| Features and tiers | Features depend on your GitLab.com subscription. | Features depend on the licensed Self-Managed tier, version, and the components you operate. |
| Backups and restores | GitLab operates the platform; you remain responsible for project-level retention and export decisions. | You design, pay for, monitor, and test the backup and disaster-recovery system. |
| CI/CD runners | Use shared or dedicated runners according to your plan and policies. | Connect your own runners or other runners and budget their compute, isolation, and maintenance. |
| Downtime tolerance | Rely on GitLab’s service operations and status communications. | Your maintenance windows, redundancy, monitoring, and recovery procedures determine availability. |
Why organizations self-host GitLab
Data-residency and governance requirements
A self-managed instance lets you select where the virtual machine and attached storage live and decide which networks can reach GitLab. That can simplify internal policies requiring source code, artifacts, or project metadata to remain in a particular jurisdiction or private network. A VPS location alone does not prove compliance: review the provider’s data-processing terms, backups, support access, and the locations of any object-storage service you attach.

Network and identity control
Teams can put GitLab behind a private address, VPN, bastion host, or corporate firewall, then integrate authentication and authorization with their own identity systems. You control inbound ports, outbound egress, certificate issuance, SSH policy, and whether runners can access production networks. This flexibility is valuable when repositories must not be reachable from the public internet, but it also makes a misconfigured firewall or expired certificate your incident to fix.
Configuration and isolation
Self-managed GitLab gives you control over the Linux host, maintenance timing, logging destinations, integrations, and separation from unrelated tenants. It can be a better fit for a lab, regulated development environment, or organization that needs a specific network topology. The trade-off is that every customization becomes part of your runbook: document it, monitor it, and verify it after upgrades.

Predictable operational boundaries
Some teams prefer a known VM, disk, and network budget to a shared SaaS operating model. That does not guarantee a lower total cost. A fair comparison includes administration time, backup storage, snapshots, bandwidth, monitoring, security response, upgrade windows, and the financial impact of downtime, not only the VPS line item.
How much VPS capacity GitLab needs
GitLab’s current installation requirements list an 8-vCPU baseline for a single-node installation. Treat that as a starting point, not a promise that every workload will be fast. The requirements documentation also recommends SSD-backed storage and warns that filesystem performance affects responsiveness. See the current figures and qualifiers at GitLab’s installation requirements.

What drives CPU and memory demand
- Number of active users and concurrent web requests.
- CI/CD job concurrency and the CPU and memory assigned to runners.
- Repository count, repository size, Git history, and clone or fetch frequency.
- Large File Storage (LFS), package registries, container images, Pages, and artifacts.
- Mirroring, scheduled jobs, imports, exports, and background Sidekiq work.
- Database, Redis, and Elasticsearch or other optional services when enabled.
There is no single safe RAM number for every installation in the supplied requirements. Measure your workload and leave headroom for maintenance, imports, and traffic spikes instead of selecting a plan from user count alone.
Storage planning
Plan persistent SSD capacity for repositories, LFS objects, job artifacts, package and container registries, uploads, Pages data, Terraform state, logs, and backup staging. Keep growth headroom: deleting a project may not immediately reduce every retained artifact or backup copy. If registries or artifacts are stored in object storage, account for that service’s capacity, request, retrieval, and egress charges separately.

Fast storage improves Git operations and background jobs; a cheap, slow volume can turn normal maintenance into a queue of delayed Sidekiq work.
Choosing a deployment method
Linux package for a conventional VPS
For a single VPS, GitLab’s Linux package is the mature, straightforward path. It bundles and configures the main services, including PostgreSQL, Redis, and Sidekiq, so you can operate one documented installation rather than assembling every component yourself. GitLab lists this method alongside other supported approaches at its installation-methods documentation.

- Choose a supported Linux distribution and a VPS with at least the documented single-node CPU baseline, SSD storage, and a recovery path.
- Reserve a fully qualified domain name, set DNS records, and decide whether GitLab is public, VPN-only, or protected by a reverse proxy.
- Apply provider firewall rules and host-level hardening. Allow only required HTTP/HTTPS and SSH access, and restrict administrative access to trusted networks.
- Install the GitLab Linux package, set the external URL, configure TLS, create the initial administrator, and verify outbound mail before inviting users.
- Configure repository, artifact, registry, upload, and backup storage. Set retention policies so these areas cannot silently consume the boot volume.
- Install or register CI/CD runners with an execution model appropriate to your threat profile; isolate untrusted jobs from the GitLab host.
- Enable monitoring and alerting for CPU, memory, disk space, I/O latency, service health, backup completion, certificate expiry, and failed jobs.
- Record the exact GitLab edition, version, package settings, secrets location, firewall rules, and recovery steps in an administrator runbook.
Helm deployment on Kubernetes
The Helm chart is appropriate when your team already operates Kubernetes, persistent volumes, ingress, observability, upgrades, and cluster security. It is not automatically simpler on one VPS: you add cluster scheduling, storage classes, networking, and more failure modes. Select it when Kubernetes skills and existing practices are assets, not merely because containers are familiar.
Backups are part of the product decision
GitLab warns that “Your GitLab instance contains critical data for your software development or organization.” A self-managed deployment therefore needs a disaster-recovery plan, not just a snapshot button. GitLab’s overview is at the backup and restore documentation.
What a GitLab backup can contain
The backup archive can include database data, Git repositories, LFS objects, job artifacts, package and container registries, uploads, Pages content, Terraform state, and other project data. The exact contents depend on your configuration and GitLab version, so map each data store before declaring the system protected.
What needs separate protection
/etc/gitlaband other configuration files.- TLS certificates, SSH host keys, and encryption or secret material.
- Object-storage data that is not included in the archive, plus its credentials and lifecycle policies.
- Provider-level infrastructure definitions, firewall rules, DNS records, and runner registration details.
For the Linux package, schedule GitLab’s documented backup task (commonly invoked as gitlab-backup create), capture success or failure in monitoring, and send archives to remote object storage or another location. GitLab documents S3-compatible, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, and locally mounted destinations in its backup procedure.

Version matching and restore tests
GitLab states that a backup can be restored only to the same GitLab version and the same CE/EE type from which it was created. Keep upgrade and rollback procedures aligned with that rule. Before an emergency, restore a copy into an isolated environment, verify users can authenticate, clone and push repositories, download artifacts, run a job, and access registry data. Record the elapsed recovery time and any manual steps.
Why an external SSD helps, but is not enough
An encrypted external SSD can be useful for rotating backup copies or staging a recovery, including a practical “external SSD for GitLab backups” workflow. Keep it as a complement to an off-site copy: a disk attached to the same office, host, or account can be lost to the same theft, outage, ransomware event, or operator mistake as the primary system.
What VPS pricing really includes
Provider invoices are only one part of self-hosting cost. Add persistent storage, backup retention, snapshots, outbound bandwidth, monitoring, alert delivery, support, administrator time, security work, and the cost of a maintenance outage. If you need high availability, redundant nodes and shared storage change the architecture and budget substantially.
| Documented example | Published detail | How to use it in a budget |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Droplet backups | For basic plans, weekly backups are listed at 20% of Droplet cost and daily backups at 30%; usage-based plans charge by restorable GiB. | Verify current regional rates and retention limits before committing; this is backup pricing, not a complete disaster-recovery design. |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Droplets are Linux virtual machines; the provider documents plan and bandwidth pricing. | Compare CPU, memory, SSD or volume performance, transfer limits, and support scope at the Droplet pricing page. |
| DigitalOcean backup details | Intervals and billing differ by plan. | Check the current percentages or GiB-based charges at the backup pricing page. |
| Hetzner Cloud backup slots | The API documentation lists seven backup slots priced at 20% of server price. | Confirm the current product, region, retention behavior, and restore process before relying on it. |
| Managed GitLab VPS service | Support scope and plan limits vary by provider; no universal price or feature set is established. | Ask who patches GitLab, controls root access, performs restores, handles incidents, and stores backups. |
Operating GitLab after installation
Patch and upgrade discipline
Track GitLab release notes, operating-system security updates, database changes, and runner compatibility. Stage upgrades on a clone or test instance, take a verified backup, confirm free disk space, announce a maintenance window, and keep a rollback path that respects the same-version restore requirement.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Monitoring and alerting
Monitor service health rather than waiting for a user to report failure. Useful alerts cover sustained CPU or memory pressure, disk and inode exhaustion, filesystem latency, database connections, Redis health, Sidekiq queue growth, runner failures, HTTP error rates, certificate expiry, replication or object-storage errors, and missed backups.
Security responsibilities
Apply least privilege, protect administrator accounts with strong authentication, rotate secrets, restrict SSH, review audit logs, patch promptly, and test restore access separately from production credentials. Treat CI jobs and uploaded artifacts as untrusted input when projects accept contributions from outside your organization.
Runners and isolation
GitLab stores source and orchestrates jobs; runner machines execute commands. Self-hosting means you choose runner capacity, autoscaling, caching, network access, and isolation. Dedicated runners can keep sensitive builds away from shared infrastructure, while ephemeral runners reduce residue between jobs but add provisioning complexity.
When GitLab.com is the better choice
Stay with GitLab.com when your team needs a working Git service today, has no administrator available for Linux and database operations, cannot tolerate a self-managed maintenance outage, or values SaaS operations more than custom network placement. It is also the safer default when backup testing, certificate renewal, monitoring, and incident response would otherwise become someone’s informal after-hours responsibility.
Self-hosting is justified when a documented requirement demands control that the hosted service cannot provide for your organization: a specific network boundary, identity integration, data location, isolation model, or software configuration. Make that requirement explicit before buying a VPS; “it might be cheaper” is not a sufficient operating plan.

A practical decision checklist
- Can you staff installation, patching, upgrades, monitoring, and emergency response?
- Can the chosen VPS meet the 8-vCPU single-node baseline and provide SSD-backed persistent storage?
- Have you estimated repository, LFS, artifact, registry, upload, log, and backup growth?
- Is your network, identity, TLS, firewall, and DNS design documented?
- Will runners be isolated appropriately for untrusted or sensitive workloads?
- Are backups encrypted, off-site, monitored, and protected separately from configuration and keys?
- Have you restored a backup on the same GitLab version and CE/EE type?
- Can you afford provider charges, administrator time, security response, and downtime?
The answer is therefore operational rather than ideological: GitLab.com buys immediate use and delegated infrastructure; a VPS buys control in exchange for running a production service. Choose self-managed only when that control solves a real requirement and you are prepared to operate the entire lifecycle.
