Tempered-glass screen protectors crack when an impact or built-up stress starts a fracture. A drop is not required: a small edge chip, uneven installation pressure, poor fit, case interference, wear, or temperature changes may contribute. A crack alone cannot reveal its exact cause or prove the phone’s display was saved.
Why a strengthened glass protector can still crack
Tempered glass is strengthened, not unbreakable. The International Consumer Electronics Association (ICEA) describes chemical strengthening as creating a compressed outer surface balanced by tension inside the glass. If an impact, defect, or pressure initiates a fracture, the glass can break despite that strengthened surface. ICEA’s screen-protection report explains the material background; it does not test every consumer protector.
Impact and vulnerable edges
A direct collision can crack a protector, and an edge strike is one possible trigger. OtterBox also lists impacts near the edges among possible causes. A tiny chip or flaw can become a starting point for a larger crack, so damage may become visible after a later bump or pressure rather than at the instant the first defect formed. The pattern is a clue, not a reliable way to identify what happened.
Fit, installation pressure, and wear
OtterBox identifies incorrect sizing, uneven or excessive application pressure, handling, and wear as possible contributors. Samsung separately warns that some third-party films can fit poorly, adhere badly, or become damaged quickly. These are possibilities, not a quantified ranking of the causes or a prediction of how long a particular protector should last. Case contact and temperature changes
If a case lip presses against or catches the protector’s edge, it may lift the edge or add stress. A specialist retailer describes this as a troubleshooting possibility, not a universal effect of using a case. OtterBox also lists temperature extremes as a possible contributor, but the available guidance does not quantify their effect. Mobile Fun’s edge-lifting advice is useful as a check, not proof that a case caused a crack.
Foldable phones need model-specific care
A protector not designed for a folding device may experience stress as the phone bends. Some foldables have a manufacturer-installed film; do not treat it like an ordinary removable protector. Follow the phone maker’s instructions for the exact model before attempting removal or replacement.

How to investigate a crack without guessing
Check the protector and how it sits on the phone. These observations can help narrow down what to address, but they cannot establish the precise cause.

- Check for lifting edges, bubbles, or a protector that appears shifted or incorrectly sized.
- Look for contact between the case lip and protector edge; remove the case temporarily to see whether the edge settles without pressure.
- Consider recent drops, squeezing, installation, handling, or exposure to temperature extremes.
What a cracked protector does—and does not—tell you
A protector is a sacrificial layer: it may take damage that could otherwise reach the display. But a cracked protector is not proof that the phone’s screen would also have cracked, or that the display underneath is unharmed. The available sources do not establish that every protector crack corresponds to damage prevented. Inspect the phone display separately, and do not treat damaged glass as fully protective.

When and how to replace it
Replace damaged glass
OtterBox recommends replacing a protector with cracks, chips, scratches, or lifting edges. Avoid pressing on broken glass, and follow the protector maker’s removal instructions. Guidance varies by product: for example, Spigen says its GLAS protector holds cracked pieces together and suggests using a stiff card to remove its thicker glass protectors. Choose and install the next protector carefully
- Confirm the protector is listed for the exact phone model and generation, including its screen shape and edge coverage.
- Check that the case leaves clearance around the protector rather than pushing against its edges.
- For a non-foldable phone, install on a clean surface and follow the product’s alignment and application instructions. Avoid uneven pressure.
- Check the phone maker’s model-specific guidance before replacing a built-in film or working on a foldable. Samsung warns that some unauthorized films may affect fit, display quality, touch response, or fingerprint recognition.
Materials also fail differently: tempered glass can crack, while flexible films may bend or peel. The sources here do not provide controlled comparative tests that establish one material as universally more protective. Consider exact-device fit, case compatibility, touch and fingerprint functions, optical clarity, and the maker’s installation and removal instructions when choosing a replacement.
