A group of 14 juvenile great white sharks and one large adult was repeatedly reported near a Monterey Bay state beach pier in July 2015, as El Niño conditions were strengthening. A researcher suggested shifting currents could help explain the gathering, but the available evidence does not establish that El Niño caused it. The sighting was in Monterey Bay—not San Francisco Bay—and is not a report of a new 2026 event.
What happened near Monterey Bay?
A July 2015 San Francisco Chronicle report described 14 juvenile great white sharks repeatedly seen near a pier at a state beach in Monterey Bay, alongside one additional large adult. The report characterized the gathering as unprecedented and described it as a possible rookery—a place where young sharks gather.
The striking number and repeated sightings made the event notable, but the account is a dated news report, not evidence that the same group remains in the area or that a comparable gathering is happening now. Monterey Bay is on California’s Central Coast; calling this a San Francisco Bay sighting would be geographically misleading.
Did El Niño bring the sharks north?
The 2015 report connected the gathering with strengthening El Niño conditions and relayed a proposed explanation: changing ocean dynamics and currents may have shifted a gathering area north. Sean Van Sommeran, identified in the report as executive director of the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, said: “It’s the same process of dynamics and water currents that has driven sea lions north.”

That is an attributed interpretation, not a demonstrated cause. The sources available here do not establish that El Niño drove these great whites north, nor do they provide a great-white study proving the mechanism for this particular gathering. The careful conclusion is that the sighting and developing El Niño coincided, and a researcher suggested a current-driven explanation.
What other California shark research can—and cannot—tell us
A 2022 peer-reviewed Frontiers in Marine Science study examined basking sharks, a different species, in the California Current ecosystem. Its findings provide context for how ocean conditions and sightings can vary, but they do not verify or explain the 2015 great white gathering.

- The authors compiled 624 basking-shark sightings from 1962 to 2018. Systematic aerial surveys covered 7,076 flights and recorded basking sharks on 262 of them; the last presence in those systematic surveys was in 1988.
- The systematic survey recorded a maximum annual count of nearly 4,000 basking sharks in 1966. Mean group size in that dataset fell from 57.2 in the 1960s to 24.0 in the 1980s.
- In the study’s models, lower sea-surface temperature and higher chlorophyll a increased the probability of a basking-shark sighting. ENSO, the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation were correlated with basking-shark presence.
These results concern basking sharks and associations in a broad regional dataset—not a causal explanation for juvenile great whites in Monterey Bay. The authors also cautioned that observer identity affected sighting patterns and that opportunistic sightings cannot establish that a species was absent when nobody reported it.
What do 2026 reports say about sharks and El Niño?
As of October 13, 2026, the cited current material does not establish a new Bay Area great-white entourage. A September 16, 2026 release from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County discussed unusual Southern California marine sightings and possible ecological effects of El Niño. It reported hammerheads off Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties, a whale shark off Malibu, and mahi-mahi near the Southern Channel Islands. Those are Southern California observations, not evidence of current activity in Monterey Bay or San Francisco Bay.

The museum said some models predicted a very large El Niño and described how El Niño can alter currents, move open-water species beyond their usual ranges, and reduce upwelling that supports the marine food web. Its phrase “super El Niño” should be understood as a characterization of a developing forecast, not a settled outcome or a Bay Area-specific prediction. NHM Ichthyology Curator Dr. Bill Ludt said of vagrant species: “The vagrants give us a glimpse into what may happen under different future ocean warming scenarios by showing us how different species respond to changing water temperatures, as not all species respond the same.”
A separate laboratory field update dated August 31, 2026 reported that sampling in Lower South Bay during July and August caught one leopard shark across the lab’s expanded sampling area. The update also reported relatively high halibut totals and described halibut as an “El Nino” fish that proliferates with higher coastal sea-surface temperatures. This is a local sampling result for a particular species and area, not a Bay Area-wide shark population estimate or a trend in great-white sightings.

How to read claims about a “sharkier” Bay Area
Shark reports are meaningful only when their species, place, date and method are clear. A 2015 news account of juvenile great whites near Monterey Bay, a study of basking sharks across the California Current, Southern California museum sightings in 2026 and Lower South Bay sampling describe different animals, locations and kinds of evidence. None can be substituted for a current, region-wide count of Bay Area great whites.
