Why do salt flats look like alien landscapes? Because several ordinary Earth processes combine in an unusually exposed setting: a closed basin concentrates minerals as water evaporates, brine moves through porous ground, salt crusts grow into repeating polygons, seasonal water turns the surface into a sky-reflecting mirror, and sediments or local biology add darker and brighter colors. Satellite processing can intensify the impression by assigning invisible wavelengths visible hues. No single mechanism explains every salt flat or every photograph.

The uncanny appearance is therefore a geological record as much as a visual effect. The crust, brine and sediments preserve evidence of changing rainfall, lake levels and mineral chemistry, which is why places such as Salar de Uyuni are studied both for Earth’s climate history and as cautious analogues for some Martian surface processes.

What a salt flat is and how its white crust forms

A salt flat, also called a salar or playa, occupies a basin whose water has no surface outlet. Streams, groundwater and occasional rainfall carry dissolved minerals into the low point. Because the basin is closed, evaporation removes water but leaves the dissolved material behind. Repeated wetting and drying gradually build an evaporite crust.

The closed-basin process

  1. Water enters. Runoff and groundwater dissolve salts and other minerals from surrounding rocks and carry them into the basin.
  2. The basin retains the water. With no river flowing out to the sea, dissolved material cannot be exported efficiently.
  3. Evaporation concentrates the brine. As water vapor leaves, the solution becomes saltier until minerals begin to crystallize.
  4. Crystals accumulate. New deposits form on older layers, while wind, floods and groundwater redistribute sediment across the surface.

NASA’s 2014 account of Salar de Uyuni describes ancient lakes evaporating in a closed basin. It identifies the pale surface mainly as halite (common table salt) and gypsum, and reports that salt crusts in many parts of Uyuni exceed 10 meters (33 feet) in thickness. The same account gives the salar an area of 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 square miles).

Why the surface looks almost uniformly white

Halite and gypsum crystals scatter light strongly, producing the familiar bright surface when the crust is dry and relatively clean. “White” does not mean the ground is chemically pure: thin films of mud, volcanic ash, carbonate or sulfate minerals can interrupt the crust, and wet areas may look gray, blue or brown because water and sediment change how light is reflected.

Figure What it describes Source and qualification
10,582 km² (4,086 mi²) Reported area of Salar de Uyuni NASA Earth Observatory, 2014; a published account, not a new survey
More than 10 m (33 ft) Salt-crust thickness in many parts of Uyuni NASA Earth Observatory, 2014; local thickness varies
Less than 200 mm per year Rainfall at the salars in NASA’s Andean overview NASA Earth Observatory, 2019; a regional climate figure
More than 1,750 mm per year Rainfall in cloud-covered areas north of the salars NASA Earth Observatory, 2019; illustrates the regional rain-shadow contrast

The rainfall numbers are climatological contrasts, not predictions of a particular season. A wet year can still flood a normally dry crust, while a dry interval can leave a broad uninterrupted white field.

Why salt flats develop repeating polygon patterns

The honeycomb-like ridges are the feature most often mistaken for simple mud cracks. Drying can certainly fracture wet sediment, but the unusually regular, repeating polygons on salt crusts require a more specific explanation.

Brine convection beneath the crust

A 2019 study by Jana Lasser, Joanna M. Nield, Marcel Ernst, Volker Karius, Giles F. S. Wiggs, Matthew R. Threadgold, Cédric Beaume and Lucas Goehring combined field observations, analogue experiments and numerical simulations. Its results support a process in which dense, salty water circulates through porous material beneath the crust. Where the brine rises, evaporative salt growth is enhanced; where it sinks or moves laterally, growth differs. The surface ridges can therefore record the circulation pattern below.

The authors’ precise conclusion is important: “We show that they are consistent with the surface expression of buoyancy-driven convection in the porous soil beneath a salt crust.” The phrase “consistent with” matters. It describes a mechanism supported by several lines of evidence, not a claim that every polygon on every playa has been proven to form identically.

Why “it just cracks like mud” is incomplete

Mud-crack explanations focus on shrinkage at the surface as water leaves. They do not by themselves explain why salt polygons can remain remarkably regular over large areas or how subsurface fluid movement affects ridge spacing. Drying and thermal stresses may still influence individual cracks, but the published convection model adds the underlying transport process needed to explain the organized pattern. Local geology, crust thickness, groundwater level and evaporation rate can all change the final geometry.

Where the white, dark and vivid colors come from

White mineral crust

Bright white usually indicates exposed evaporite minerals, especially halite and gypsum at Uyuni. The color is a surface optical effect: crystals and rough crust scatter sunlight, while a thin layer of water can make the same minerals appear darker or more reflective.

Dark margins and temporary sediment

Dark patches often consist of sediment rather than a different kind of salt. NASA reported that rainfall carried dark volcanic sediment to the edges of Uyuni and neighboring Coipasa in early 2019. Those dried lake beds darkened temporarily and then began to lighten as the material was redistributed or covered by new evaporite deposits.

Water, runoff and local chemistry

NASA’s 2022 account of Uyuni’s discoloration lists several possible contributors: runoff, volcanic sediment, and microbes or algae growing in water. The possibilities are site-specific. A colored patch may reflect suspended sediment, a shallow pond, dissolved minerals, biological pigments or a mixture of them. Its color alone cannot identify the cause.

Algae explain some red and orange scenes, not all of them

Nearby Laguna Colorada is a clear example of local biology: NASA attributes its vivid hues to algae that thrive in salty water. That observation should not be generalized to every red, pink or orange salt flat. Different basins receive different minerals, have different salinities and host different organisms.

Appearance in a photograph Possible physical explanation How cautiously to interpret it
Bright, dry white Exposed halite or gypsum crust Common at Uyuni, but not proof of a single mineral
Gray or black margins Volcanic or other dark sediment carried by runoff Often temporary and concentrated near basin edges
Red, pink or orange water Local algae, sediment or dissolved minerals Check the site; algae are documented at Laguna Colorada, not universally
Blue or turquoise rectangles Water-filled evaporation ponds or image-color assignment Determine whether the image is natural color or false color

Why a salt flat becomes a giant mirror

The mirror effect appears when a very flat crust is covered by a shallow, smooth layer of water. The water surface reflects the sky, while the broad horizon and nearly level ground erase most visual cues that would reveal the true scale. A person or vehicle can seem to stand in an endless sky because the reflection and the horizon merge.

It is seasonal, not a permanent property

Flood depth, coverage and duration vary from year to year. NASA reported that rainfall around the Altiplano in November, December and early January filled Uyuni nearly to its edges during the 2021–22 season. Hydrologist Jorge Molina Carpio of the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés described that event this way: “The extent of the filling of Salar de Uyuni this year is above normal. The rainy season started earlier than previous years, and rainfall was well above average over the southern Altiplano.” That statement refers to the 2021–22 season, not a current forecast.

Regional circulation helps determine how much water arrives. Climate scientist René Garreaud of the University of Chile explained, “The stronger and more persistent the easterly wind, the more precipitation you get over the Altiplano.” The quote concerns rainfall input; it does not explain polygon formation or identify the cause of a particular color.

Natural colors versus satellite false color

Not every image shows what a person would see from the ground. A natural-color photograph records visible light in approximately the combinations human vision uses. A false-color satellite composite assigns measured wavelengths to visible red, green and blue channels so that subtle differences in water, vegetation, minerals or surface texture stand out.

The Salar de Atacama example

In NASA’s Landsat image of Salar de Atacama, rocks that appear red to the eye are rendered green in the false-color display. Mottled light blue within the saltpan indicates surface salt crust, while turquoise and white rectangles are evaporation ponds. Those hues are useful analytical labels, not a literal palette for an observer standing on the salar.

Before interpreting a blue, purple or green area, read the image caption and processing description. If it says “false color,” “infrared” or names wavelength bands, treat the colors as a visualization of data. This distinction prevents a processed map from being mistaken for evidence that the landscape is naturally neon-colored.

A reliable way to compare salt-flat photographs

Two images can look similar while showing different processes. Use these four axes instead of assuming that all polygonal or colorful surfaces formed alike.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Why it changes the interpretation
Wet versus dry surface Is there a continuous film of water, isolated ponds or only dry crust? Water creates reflections and can darken minerals; dry crust reveals texture and polygons.
Mineral crust versus sediment-covered margin Does the pattern sit on bright evaporite or darker deposited material? Sediment can mask the salt and create temporary dark zones.
Natural-color versus false-color imagery Does the caption identify infrared or assigned bands? Displayed hues may represent measurements rather than visible colors.
Local hydrology and source minerals What feeds the basin, and which rocks or volcanoes surround it? Runoff chemistry, groundwater and evaporation control crust minerals and biological habitats.

What the crust reveals about past climates

Uyuni and neighboring Coipasa preserve more than a striking surface. NASA describes layers rich in halite and gypsum as indicators of drier intervals. Muddy layers containing organic material and microfossils point to wetter periods when larger or longer-lived lakes occupied the basin. Reading those layers lets scientists reconstruct changes that are invisible in a single modern photograph.

Brines and hydrated clays also make the region useful as an analogue for selected Martian questions. Researchers compare how salts, clays and surface processes interact under arid conditions, but Earth and Mars are not identical: their atmospheres, gravity, temperatures and hydrologic histories differ. “Analogue” means a process or material offers a testable comparison, not that the environments are interchangeable.

Why other salt flats do not look exactly like Uyuni

The Andes are not the only place where evaporite landscapes form. A U.S. Geological Survey investigation of the Bonneville Salt Flats and Pilot Valley Playa identified carbonate-, sulfate- and chloride-rich zones and showed that crust form and morphology vary with hydrologic conditions. Those findings come from historical fieldwork and should be understood in the context of the periods and land-use conditions studied.

The comparison reinforces a central rule: the same broad category—salt flat—can contain different mineral mixtures, groundwater pathways, flooding histories and sediment sources. A polygon field in one basin is not automatically evidence of the same chemistry or water movement in another.

How to read an “alien landscape” image without being misled

  1. Identify the site and date. A caption can reveal whether the image shows Uyuni, Atacama, Bonneville or another basin, and whether it was taken during flooding or drought.
  2. Check the image type. Decide whether it is a ground photograph, natural-color satellite image or false-color composite.
  3. Look for water. A smooth reflective layer points to recent inundation; dry ridges and sharp polygon relief indicate exposed crust.
  4. Separate color from cause. Ask whether the patch could be sediment, mineral variation, runoff, biology or processing before assigning an explanation.
  5. Use the geology. Surrounding volcanoes, drainage channels and basin margins can explain why one area contains dark sediment or unusual salts.
  6. Keep the mechanism qualified. Polygonal ridges are consistent with subsurface buoyancy-driven convection, but local conditions can modify the pattern.

Salt flats look alien because a flat, mineral-rich basin exposes processes that are usually hidden beneath soil or water. Evaporation leaves the crust, brine circulation organizes its ridges, seasonal flooding supplies the mirror, sediments and organisms supply local color, and satellite processing can transform measurements into unfamiliar hues. Together those effects create the otherworldly scene while preserving a readable record of Earth’s water, climate and geology.
