A rocket launch is scrubbed when controllers terminate that particular launch attempt before liftoff. A scrub is not automatically a mission cancellation, a lost payload, or evidence that the spacecraft was damaged. Teams stop the countdown when weather, hardware data, the launch window, range availability, or public-safety conditions no longer support a safe launch. They then assess the cause and choose among recycling the countdown, repairing and retesting hardware, or waiting for a later opportunity. What happens to the payload is mission-specific: it may remain integrated with the vehicle while work continues, or it may require a different handling plan set by the vehicle, launch site, and mission team.

Hold versus scrub: two different countdown outcomes

A hold is a pause in countdown operations. Holds can be scheduled in advance so teams can complete work, coordinate a launch window, or synchronize activities without abandoning the attempt. NASA notes that a hold can stop the T-minus sequence while elapsed L-minus time continues; the labels describe different countdown references rather than two independent countdowns. See NASA’s Artemis II wet dress rehearsal countdown explanation.

A scrub terminates the current attempt. NASA’s Apollo 13 prelaunch report defined a scrub as “a termination of the countdown.” That report described turnaround as the time needed to recycle and count down for a later launch window when no serial repairs are required. Those are historical definitions; current procedures differ among launch providers and vehicles. The Apollo terminology is documented in NASA’s Launch Countdown and Turnaround Capability, AS-508.

In practical terms, a hold means “pause and continue if conditions are cleared.” A scrub means “stop this attempt and establish a new plan.” A countdown can include several holds before a final decision to scrub.

Why launch teams scrub a countdown

Controllers scrub when they cannot demonstrate that proceeding is safe and viable within the remaining time. The trigger may be a single red-line reading or a combination of limits that leaves too little margin to investigate.

Weather outside the vehicle’s limits

Launch weather rules cover more than rain at the pad. NASA’s crew-launch operations criteria include acceptable conditions near the launch site and along the flight path. Storms, thick clouds, high winds, and wind shear can delay a launch; exact limits depend on the vehicle, mission profile, and stage of flight. Weather rules also account for conditions that could endanger a crew, vehicle, recovery operation, or ground personnel. NASA describes these criteria in its crew launch and return operations reference.

Technical readings or hardware concerns

Telemetry can reveal a leak, temperature outside a required range, a valve or sensor that does not behave as expected, or an engine condition that cannot be cleared before the window closes. A problem does not have to be catastrophic to stop a launch: uncertainty itself can be disqualifying when there is no time to diagnose it safely.

Launch-window and orbital constraints

A vehicle may be ready but unable to launch after its permitted window expires. Orbital geometry, lighting, rendezvous timing, spacecraft power, propellant margins, and other mission constraints determine when departure is useful. The countdown for NASA’s Artemis I mission began about two days before launch and included planned holds and a targeted window, as explained in Artemis I Launch Countdown 101.

Range and public-safety conditions

Launch controllers must have the required airspace and sea areas cleared and must coordinate with range authorities. Aircraft or boats entering a hazard area, a communications problem with the range, or a public-safety concern can halt the attempt even when the rocket is technically healthy. NASA’s operations reference explains the need to clear aircraft and boats from affected areas.

“Sometimes called a ‘scrub,’ launch controllers may decide not to proceed with launch if a technical or weather issue arises during or prior to the countdown.”

NASA used that wording in its report on the Artemis I wet dress rehearsal at NASA ‘Go’ for Artemis I Wet Dress Rehearsal. It is a description of the decision, not a guarantee that every scrub has the same cause.

How a countdown can run out of time

Countdown operations are sequenced around fueling, pressurization, guidance checks, range coordination, and the opening of a launch window. Some activities can be paused; others consume time or require a fresh setup. If engineers need more data than the remaining window allows, the safest choice is to stop and analyze rather than compress checks.

Artemis I illustrates this interaction. On Aug. 29, 2022, weather delayed propellant loading. Teams then encountered a hydrogen leak and an engine-conditioning issue. The two-hour launch window expired before the problems could be resolved, so the attempt was scrubbed. NASA reported that engineers reviewed the launch-attempt data afterward in Engineers Assess Data After Scrub.

What happens immediately after a scrub

  1. Controllers safe the vehicle. Teams stop the countdown at the approved point and place propulsion, electrical, guidance, and ground systems in a safe configuration.
  2. Propellants are managed. If cryogenic propellants are loaded, the vehicle may be held in a controlled state, replenished, or drained. Draining is not an automatic rule for every rocket; it depends on the vehicle and the reason for the scrub.
  3. Engineers preserve and review data. Telemetry, videos, sensor trends, weather observations, range status, and operator notes are examined to determine whether the cause is understood and whether the hardware remains safe.
  4. Mission managers set a disposition. The team decides whether to recycle for another window, repair and retest, or stand down for a longer inspection or schedule change.

NASA’s Artemis I wet dress rehearsal demonstrates vehicle-specific post-stop work: teams practiced draining cryogenic propellants after stopping the countdown and prepared the integrated rocket and spacecraft for follow-up operations. During that rehearsal, more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic propellants were loaded. Those actions describe that vehicle and test, not a universal procedure for all launch systems.

What happens to the payload?

The payload is not considered lost simply because the launch attempt was scrubbed. In many operations it remains with the launch vehicle while teams inspect systems and prepare another attempt. However, no single handling rule applies to every spacecraft. The payload’s treatment depends on its design, environmental limits, access requirements, launch vehicle, pad, fueling state, and mission plan.

When the payload stays integrated

If the vehicle and spacecraft remain within approved conditions, teams can keep them together, protect them from weather, and repeat selected checks before a later countdown. This can be the quickest route when the cause was a passing weather violation or a range constraint. The provider still has to verify that exposure to cryogenic temperatures, vibration, electrical states, and time on the pad remains acceptable.

When payload access or removal is required

A technical finding may require technicians to open hardware, replace an item, perform a more extensive inspection, or move the spacecraft to a processing facility. Some payloads have batteries, hazardous materials, contamination controls, or narrow environmental limits that make prolonged pad exposure undesirable. Whether a payload is detached, returned to a clean room, or left in place is therefore a mission-specific engineering decision, not a standard consequence of a scrub.

What a scrub does not prove

  • It does not prove that the payload was damaged.
  • It does not prove that the payload was removed from the rocket.
  • It does not establish a fixed amount of reprocessing or a universal delay.
  • It does not mean the mission has been canceled.

Public statements may describe the vehicle work without detailing payload handling. Unless the provider publishes a specific disposition, the accurate answer is that the payload remains subject to the mission’s approved processing and safety plan.

How teams choose the next launch opportunity

After data review, planners compare the cause with the next feasible window. A weather-only scrub may allow a retry soon if forecasts, range scheduling, and vehicle rules align. A leak, engine issue, or unexplained sensor reading can require troubleshooting, hardware replacement, retesting, and a new readiness review.

NASA’s June 30, 2026 launch of a servicing spacecraft intended to boost the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory was postponed because of unfavorable weather. NASA targeted another opportunity for the following day, an example of a planned retry rather than a promise that every mission can launch 24 hours later. The agency’s account is Launch of Mission to Boost NASA’s Swift Scrubs Due to Weather.

Launch windows can also be separated by days, weeks, or longer when orbital geometry, range availability, spacecraft readiness, or repairs dictate. A “next attempt” announcement is therefore a schedule target, not evidence that the underlying issue has been fully resolved.

Examples: why two scrubs can lead to very different recoveries

Example Cause or trigger Countdown and vehicle state What followed
Artemis I, Aug. 29, 2022 Weather delayed propellant loading; teams also encountered a hydrogen leak and an engine-conditioning issue. The two-hour launch window expired before the issues were cleared. Engineers assessed launch data and mission managers planned the next decision; the event was not treated as a payload-loss event. NASA’s report.
Swift servicing mission, June 30, 2026 Unfavorable weather. The attempt was postponed rather than continued into unsafe conditions. NASA targeted another opportunity the following day, subject to conditions. NASA’s mission update.
STS-1, first launch attempt A computer issue prevented the planned launch. The countdown was stopped so the problem could be repaired. The shuttle was subsequently prepared for a later attempt. NASA recounts the historical event in 40 Years Ago: The Countdown Begins for STS-1.

These cases show why the word “scrubbed” alone says little about schedule impact. The cause, fueling state, remaining window, required inspection, and range or weather outlook determine what comes next.

How to read a launch-provider update

Look for five details in an official status report:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Cause: Was the trigger weather, a technical reading, a range issue, or a closed window?
  2. Countdown state: Had fueling begun, and were engines or other systems being conditioned?
  3. Vehicle work: Does the update mention draining, safing, inspection, repair, or retesting?
  4. Next window: Is a date firm, targeted, or merely under review?
  5. Payload statement: Does the provider explicitly say the spacecraft remains integrated, is being moved, or needs additional processing?

If one of these details is absent, do not infer it from the word “scrub.” Historical NASA procedures can explain terminology, but they should not be treated as operating rules for a current commercial or government vehicle.

Common misconceptions

“A scrub means the rocket exploded or failed.”

No. A scrub occurs before liftoff because teams choose not to proceed. It can follow a minor weather violation, an unresolved sensor reading, a range conflict, or a serious hardware concern; the term itself does not rank severity.

“The payload must be unloaded every time.”

No universal rule exists. Payload handling is determined by the mission’s safety and processing plan. Some operations keep the spacecraft integrated while others require access or removal.

“The next launch will be the next day.”

Only when the vehicle is ready, the payload remains within limits, the range is available, and the next window works. A weather scrub can sometimes be retried quickly; technical findings often require longer work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A hold and a scrub are interchangeable.”

They are not. A hold pauses the countdown; a scrub ends that attempt and starts the process of establishing a later one.

Is there a typical scrub rate?

The available NASA material does not establish a single, comparable scrub frequency across launch providers, vehicles, or mission types. Launch schedules and reporting practices differ, so a percentage without a defined population and period would be misleading. The figures that are available here—Artemis I’s two-hour launch window and the wet dress rehearsal’s more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic propellant—describe those specific operations, not launches in general.
