Reliance Industries shares fell at the October 8, 2026 close as India’s satellite-broadband approval process became the subject of a public dispute between Elon Musk and the government. But the market data does not show that the dispute alone caused the decline: Indian shares broadly sold off that day, and Musk’s claim that unnamed business interests were blocking Starlink was an allegation, not an established finding.
How much did Reliance shares fall?
On October 8, 2026, Reliance Industries closed down 2.43% on the BSE at ₹1,177.30 and 2.45% on the NSE at ₹1,178, PTI reported. The company’s market valuation fell by ₹39,718 crore to ₹15,93,185.78 crore. These are historical closing figures, not a current share quote. PTI
Was the satcom dispute the reason for the fall?
The available reporting does not establish the dispute as the sole cause. The wider market also fell sharply on October 8: the BSE Sensex lost 1,045.46 points, or 1.44%, to close at 71,593.24. Reliance accounted for 164 points of the index’s decline, PTI reported. That context matters when interpreting the stock move; it does not rule out company-specific factors. PTI

On October 8, Musk accused unnamed “oligarchs” of trying to block Starlink in India to preserve a monopoly. He later asked, “Is Ambani the real boss of India?” Reuters reported that Musk provided no evidence against Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani. The statements should therefore be understood as Musk’s allegations, not proof that Ambani or Reliance influenced the approval process. Reuters Reuters

How did the Indian government respond?
On October 8, the telecommunications ministry rejected the claim of unfair treatment, saying: “The suggestion that the framework or its application is unfair or discriminatory is baseless and misconceived.” That is the ministry’s position, not an independent adjudication of Musk’s allegation. At a media briefing on October 9, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said: “India does not allow a monopoly in any sector.” The response addressed the broader claim of monopolistic treatment; it does not by itself settle the facts of the dispute. Reuters

What approvals did Starlink still need to launch?
A licence was not permission to begin commercial service immediately. Reuters reported that Starlink still had to meet security-compliance conditions and receive a spectrum assignment before launch. The government said Starlink and the other two licensed satellite operators were at broadly the same regulatory stage. Reuters

PTI identified the three operators as Starlink, Reliance Jio’s satellite venture Jio Satcom, and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb. It reported that security assessments and spectrum-related approvals remained outstanding before commercial services could begin. Available reporting does not provide enough operator-by-operator detail to rank their readiness or predict launch dates, nor does “broadly the same stage” mean every technical or legal step was identical. What the dispute means for India’s satellite-broadband market
The regulatory disagreement matters in a market with substantial potential, but forecasts should not be mistaken for current usage or revenue. Reuters reported that India had more than a billion internet users and cited a Deloitte forecast that the country’s satellite-broadband market could be worth $1.9 billion by 2030.
