A React dialog closes abruptly when the element that should animate is removed before its exit animation can run. The fix is to separate the dialog’s open state from the moment its DOM is finally unmounted: keep the dialog and its animation boundary mounted while the overlay and content leave, then remove them after the CSS or JavaScript animation completes. With Radix Dialog, use its presence lifecycle or forceMount when an animation library must control removal. With Motion, keep AnimatePresence mounted around the conditional child. With React Transition Group, let the transition component own the leaving state.
What is actually cutting off the animation?
React does not animate a node merely because a CSS rule contains a transition or keyframe. When a render changes from an element to no element, React can remove the DOM node immediately. A removed node has no pixels left to paint and no element on which a browser can run a closing animation.
The common pattern looks like this:
{open && <Dialog />}
If open becomes false, the entire dialog subtree disappears in that render. A close class, data-state="closed" selector, or exit prop inside that subtree never gets a chance to display. The same problem occurs one level higher when a parent conditionally removes the component that is supposed to coordinate the exit.

- A mounted primitive with a presence lifecycle: the dialog changes to a closing state, remains in the DOM while the animation runs, and is unmounted afterward.
- A mounted animation manager: a boundary observes a child leaving React’s tree and delays final removal until the child’s exit work is complete.
Motion documents this boundary requirement for AnimatePresence, and Radix’s Dialog implementation ties its parts to a presence mechanism driven by the open state. See Motion’s AnimatePresence documentation and the Radix Dialog source.
Diagnose the lifecycle before changing CSS
1. Find the first conditional that removes the dialog
Search upward from the animated element for every expression using open, a route condition, a selected item, or a parent component’s loading state. If any of those expressions removes the dialog root or the animation boundary in the same render that starts closing, the exit cannot be visible.
Use browser developer tools to inspect the DOM while closing. If the content and overlay vanish immediately, this is a mounting problem, not an easing or duration problem. If the nodes remain but their computed animation is absent, inspect the state attribute, class name, keyframes, and reduced-motion rules next.

2. Separate “requested close” from “finished close”
Keep a state value that represents whether the dialog should be open, and let the dialog or transition manager decide when the subtree is safe to remove. Do not set a parent’s conditional render to false as a shortcut for starting the animation.
const [open, setOpen] = useState(false);
return (
<Dialog open={open} onOpenChange={setOpen}>
{/* trigger, portal, overlay, and content */}
</Dialog>
);
In this shape, the primitive receives the state change and can keep its parts mounted during the closed phase. If a separate animation library owns the timing, the primitive must be configured so that library can retain the relevant parts.
3. Check whether a boundary is itself conditional
This defeats Motion:
{open && (
<AnimatePresence>
<motion.div exit={{ opacity: 0 }} />
</AnimatePresence>
)}
When open becomes false, AnimatePresence is removed along with its child. It cannot observe a child leaving if the observer has already left. Keep the boundary rendered and condition only its direct child.

Fix a Radix Dialog with CSS keyframes
Radix Dialog exposes open/closed state through its component lifecycle and supports presence handling for the portal, overlay, and content. Its documentation describes forceMount for cases where an application needs more control, including integration with animation libraries. Start with Radix’s Dialog documentation, then check the source for the version installed in your project.
Basic state-driven CSS
Keep the Radix root controlled by open and put the animation on the actual overlay and content elements:
import * as Dialog from "@radix-ui/react-dialog";
export function PreferencesDialog({ open, onOpenChange }) {
return (
<Dialog.Root open={open} onOpenChange={onOpenChange}>
<Dialog.Trigger>Preferences</Dialog.Trigger>
<Dialog.Portal>
<Dialog.Overlay className="DialogOverlay" />
<Dialog.Content className="DialogContent">
<Dialog.Title>Preferences</Dialog.Title>
<Dialog.Close>Close</Dialog.Close>
</Dialog.Content>
</Dialog.Portal>
</Dialog.Root>
);
}
@keyframes overlayShow {
from { opacity: 0; }
to { opacity: 1; }
}
@keyframes overlayHide {
from { opacity: 1; }
to { opacity: 0; }
}
@keyframes contentShow {
from { opacity: 0; transform: translate(-50%, -48%) scale(.96); }
to { opacity: 1; transform: translate(-50%, -50%) scale(1); }
}
@keyframes contentHide {
from { opacity: 1; transform: translate(-50%, -50%) scale(1); }
to { opacity: 0; transform: translate(-50%, -48%) scale(.96); }
}
.DialogOverlay[data-state="open"] {
animation: overlayShow 180ms ease-out;
}
.DialogOverlay[data-state="closed"] {
animation: overlayHide 140ms ease-in;
}
.DialogContent[data-state="open"] {
animation: contentShow 180ms ease-out;
}
.DialogContent[data-state="closed"] {
animation: contentHide 140ms ease-in;
}
These are keyframe animations, not CSS transitions. A transition interpolates a property while an element changes between two rendered styles; a keyframe animation supplies an explicit timeline. Either can be valid, but the element must remain present while the closing state is applied. Radix’s presence logic is what allows the closed keyframes to be seen before unmounting.
Do not hide a closing dialog in a way that leaves it interactive
A visual fade alone is not an accessibility lifecycle. During close, preserve Radix’s modal behavior: focus should be managed by the dialog, the overlay should block the page as intended, and focus should be restored when the dialog closes. Avoid replacing the dialog with a manually positioned, pointer-active element that is merely transparent. If you introduce custom wrappers, ensure they do not intercept focus or clicks after the close phase has completed.
When CSS appears to skip the closed keyframe
- Inspect the element immediately after the close action and confirm
data-state="closed"is present. - Check that the selector is applied to the element carrying the animation, not only to a wrapper that is removed.
- Look for a parent conditional such as
{open && <Dialog.Root>...}; move that condition inside an always-mounted presence boundary. - Check a global rule that sets
display: none,visibility: hidden, or an overridinganimation: none. - Test with reduced motion enabled. A deliberate reduced-motion rule can shorten or remove the animation; that is different from an unexpectedly unmounted node.
Use Radix forceMount with a JavaScript animation library
A JavaScript animation library needs to know when to start and finish the exit. If Radix unmounts a part before the library receives that lifecycle, the library cannot animate it. Radix documents forceMount for taking more control of mounting and unmounting, including control by React animation libraries.

Mount the parts the library controls
Apply forceMount to the Radix parts that the chosen version exposes for that purpose, commonly the portal, overlay, or content. Then render the animated element according to the library’s presence state rather than assuming that open={false} should remove it synchronously.
<Dialog.Root open={open} onOpenChange={setOpen}>
<Dialog.Portal forceMount>
<AnimatePresence>
{open && (
<Dialog.Overlay forceMount asChild>
<motion.div
key="overlay"
initial={{ opacity: 0 }}
animate={{ opacity: 1 }}
exit={{ opacity: 0 }}
/>
</Dialog.Overlay>
)}
</AnimatePresence>
{/* Apply the same ownership decision to Content. */}
</Dialog.Portal>
</Dialog.Root>
The exact nesting and supported props vary by Radix release and by whether you use asChild. Treat the installed component’s API as authoritative. The essential rule is consistent: do not let both Radix and the animation library independently decide to remove the same node.
Coordinate one close event
Close buttons, overlay clicks, and Escape should all flow through the dialog’s onOpenChange. The animation’s completion callback can then clear any separate “render while leaving” state. Do not call a parent callback that immediately removes the whole dialog from the tree before the callback runs.

Fix Motion exit animations with AnimatePresence
Motion’s documented model is straightforward: AnimatePresence watches its direct children, detects when one is removed from the React tree, and enables that child’s exit animation. The watcher must remain mounted. Read the current rules in the AnimatePresence documentation.
Keep the boundary outside the condition
import { AnimatePresence, motion } from "motion/react";
function DialogShell({ open, onClose }) {
return (
<AnimatePresence>
{open && (
<motion.div
key="dialog-shell"
className="dialog-shell"
initial={{ opacity: 0, y: 8, scale: 0.98 }}
animate={{ opacity: 1, y: 0, scale: 1 }}
exit={{ opacity: 0, y: 8, scale: 0.98 }}
transition={{ duration: 0.18, ease: "easeOut" }}
>
<button onClick={onClose}>Close</button>
</motion.div>
)}
</AnimatePresence>
);
}
The child’s key identifies which instance is leaving. If a dialog switches between records or modes, give each rendered instance a key derived from its identity. Reusing one key can make Motion treat a replacement as the same node and produce a result that looks like a missing exit.

Preserve dialog semantics while animating
Animating a plain motion.div around a dialog does not automatically provide a modal focus trap, accessible name, focus restoration, or Escape handling. Keep those responsibilities in the dialog primitive. Animate a primitive part with asChild only when the resulting DOM and ref behavior remain valid.
Understand popLayout ref requirements
Motion’s popLayout mode can remove an exiting element from layout while it animates. When a custom component is an immediate child in that mode, Motion requires the component to forward a ref to the DOM element being taken out of layout. Without that ref, the layout operation cannot target the actual node. A normal modal that is fixed-positioned may not need popLayout; use it only when its layout behavior solves a real problem.
Common Motion failure modes
- The boundary unmounts: move
AnimatePresenceabove the condition. - No direct child leaves: ensure the condition is on the child directly under the boundary, not hidden inside a component that always renders a wrapper.
- A key changes unexpectedly: use a stable key for one dialog instance and a deliberate identity key when replacing instances.
- The parent route changes: place the boundary in a component that survives the route or layout change long enough to observe the exit.
- Only the panel fades: animate the overlay separately if it should leave at a different speed; both must remain mounted through their own exits.
Use React Transition Group when you want an explicit transition lifecycle
React Transition Group is designed to manage mounting and unmounting states over time for animated components. Its project repository is at github.com/reactjs/react-transition-group. A transition component represents the entering, entered, exiting, and exited phases, so unmounting occurs after the exit phase rather than at the instant a boolean changes.
import { CSSTransition } from "react-transition-group";
import { useRef } from "react";
function AnimatedDialog({ open }) {
const nodeRef = useRef(null);
return (
<CSSTransition
in={open}
timeout={{ enter: 180, exit: 140 }}
classNames="dialog"
unmountOnExit
nodeRef={nodeRef}
>
<div ref={nodeRef} role="dialog" aria-modal="true">
Dialog content
</div>
</CSSTransition>
);
}
.dialog-enter { opacity: 0; transform: scale(.96); }
.dialog-enter-active { opacity: 1; transform: scale(1); transition: opacity 180ms ease-out, transform 180ms ease-out; }
.dialog-exit { opacity: 1; transform: scale(1); }
.dialog-exit-active { opacity: 0; transform: scale(.96); transition: opacity 140ms ease-in, transform 140ms ease-in; }
unmountOnExit is safe here because the transition component, not the parent’s conditional render, controls when removal happens. Confirm the API against the version in your package: the project notes that its version 2 and later API is not backward-compatible with version 1, and the version 1 codebase is no longer updated.
If you combine this approach with a dialog primitive, avoid assigning unmount ownership to both systems. Let the transition component retain the visual node while the primitive continues to provide the required focus and accessibility lifecycle, or use the primitive’s documented controlled-mount option and integrate the transition at the supported part boundary.
React’s View Transition API is related, but not a universal fix
React documents a ViewTransition reference for coordinating visual transitions under its documented conditions. It does not change the basic rule for a dialog that is synchronously removed: the code still needs a supported transition boundary and a lifecycle in which the old visual state can be captured. Do not assume that adding a View Transition automatically supplies modal focus management, delayed unmounting, or the semantics provided by a dialog primitive.

For a production dialog, first make the mount and accessibility lifecycle correct. Then evaluate View Transition support for the React version, browser targets, and component structure you actually ship.
Accessibility checks during the exit phase
A visually smooth close can still be broken if the dialog remains usable after it appears closed. Test the complete lifecycle, not only the pixels.
- Focus on open: focus moves into the modal and lands on a sensible control.
- Focus while closing: Escape, the close button, and overlay dismissal do not leave focus trapped in a node that is about to disappear.
- Focus on close: focus returns to the trigger or another deliberate target after the dialog is removed.
- Screen-reader state: the dialog has an accessible name and modal semantics for the open phase, and it is no longer exposed as an interactive dialog after closing.
- Pointer behavior: an exiting overlay does not unexpectedly allow clicks through to the page, and a fully closed dialog does not intercept clicks.
- Reduced motion: a user preference can shorten or disable motion without breaking the close lifecycle.
Radix documents modal focus trapping, screen-reader announcements, and the structure of its Dialog component in its component documentation. Preserve those behaviors instead of replacing them with a transparent, manually hidden element.
A systematic troubleshooting checklist
- Reproduce with a visible duration. Temporarily use a 1-second exit so you can inspect the DOM and state attributes.
- Watch the DOM. If the node disappears in the same render as
open=false, move the condition inside a presence or transition boundary. - Identify the owner. Choose Radix presence, Motion, or React Transition Group as the one authority that delays removal.
- Inspect the exact animated node. Confirm that its closed class or
data-stateis present and that no ancestor setsdisplay:none. - Check timing values. For CSS, the animation duration must match the lifecycle expected by the primitive. For a transition component, its timeout must cover the CSS transition. For JavaScript animation, let the library’s completion signal drive removal.
- Check keys and refs. Motion needs stable identity keys, and
popLayoutcustom children need a forwarded ref. Transition Group integrations should use the ref pattern required by the installed release. - Test every close path. Exercise the close button, Escape, overlay click, parent state change, route change, and any async success or error callback.
- Test keyboard and assistive technology behavior. Verify focus before, during, and after the exit, with reduced motion enabled and disabled.
- Remove the diagnostic delay. Restore a duration that fits the interface and keep the lifecycle ownership unchanged.
Patterns to avoid
Conditioning the entire dialog on open
This is the root cause in many implementations:
{open && <DialogWithExitAnimation />}
It is acceptable only when DialogWithExitAnimation is itself an always-mounted transition manager whose internal lifecycle retains the visual child. Otherwise, the parent removes the very component that needs to animate.
Using a timeout as the only source of truth
A hard-coded setTimeout can drift from the CSS duration, be interrupted by a second close request, or remove a node while a JavaScript animation is still running. Prefer the completion lifecycle supplied by the animation or transition system. If a timeout is unavoidable, keep one owner, derive it from the same duration, clear it on cancellation, and handle repeated open-close changes.
Animating only an invisible wrapper
If the wrapper is removed while the overlay or content is still being painted, the visible parts still disappear abruptly. Put the exit behavior on the node that owns the pixels, or keep that node mounted through the wrapper’s exit.
Leaving an invisible modal interactive
opacity:0 does not make an element non-interactive. It can still receive focus and pointer events. Let the dialog primitive and the transition lifecycle determine when modal semantics end; do not rely on transparency as a substitute for unmounting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPractical decision guide
- Choose Radix CSS keyframes when the dialog primitive’s open/closed state and presence lifecycle meet your visual needs. It keeps the fewest moving parts.
- Choose Radix plus a JavaScript library when you need spring physics, coordinated panel and overlay motion, or animation state that is not convenient in CSS. Use
forceMountwhere the API supports it and give the library removal ownership. - Choose Motion when you want declarative enter and exit props across a broader React interface. Keep
AnimatePresencemounted and use deliberate keys. - Choose React Transition Group when explicit enter/exit classes and callbacks fit your architecture or when you need a transition component to retain the node.
- Evaluate View Transition separately for supported React and browser targets; it is not a replacement for dialog semantics or a guaranteed unmount delay.
Whichever route you choose, the invariant is the same: closing state must be rendered before removal, and the component responsible for observing that state must survive long enough to finish the exit.
