RAM prices are rising because demand for AI servers is competing for memory-manufacturing capacity that could otherwise supply conventional DRAM used in PCs and phones. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 forecast calls for conventional DRAM contract prices to rise again in the fourth quarter; it also expects PC DRAM supply could shrink in 2027 as capacity shifts toward servers. Those are market forecasts, not guarantees about what a particular retail kit will cost.
Why are RAM prices going up?
AI data centers and other servers need large amounts of memory, including high-performance products such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Manufacturers are directing more advanced production capacity toward server products, where demand and returns are strong. That leaves less capacity available for conventional DRAM, the broad category used in products such as PC memory.
The shift does not mean HBM and a desktop RAM module are interchangeable. They are different memory products, but they draw on parts of the same manufacturing ecosystem. S&P Global Market Intelligence describes HBM production as tightening conventional DRAM supply and says higher HBM margins give manufacturers an incentive to prioritize AI-linked products. S&P Global Market Intelligence’s January 2026 analysis reports Visible Alpha estimates that Samsung’s traditional DRAM revenue per bit would rise 116% year over year to $0.79 in 2026, SK hynix’s would rise 78% to $0.70, and Micron’s traditional DRAM average selling price would rise 54% to $1.06. These are analyst consensus forecasts reported by S&P Global—not company guidance, observed consumer prices, or prices for retail RAM kits.

Suppliers cannot redirect every factory, packaging line, or testing operation immediately when demand changes. TrendForce cites limits in component supply, packaging and testing capacity, and front-end production flexibility as constraints on how quickly server DRAM supply can expand. Its September 30, 2026 market outlook says suppliers continue to prioritize advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products.

- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Consumer demand can temper increases
Higher memory costs also affect the devices that use it. TrendForce says rising component costs are weighing on notebook sales and mobile DRAM costs are weighing on smartphone production. If device makers or consumers pull back, that can limit how far memory prices rise, even while supply remains tight.
What the latest price forecast does—and does not—say
TrendForce forecasts conventional DRAM contract prices to increase 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. Its earlier 3Q26 forecast was a 13–18% quarter-over-quarter increase, so the later outlook projects a slower pace of growth, not a decline. These figures describe conventional DRAM contracts between market participants; they are not a forecast that every consumer RAM kit will rise by the same percentage.

The same TrendForce outlook forecasts NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. NAND is used for storage, such as SSDs, rather than being RAM. Its price outlook illustrates pressure across the wider memory market, but it should not be treated as a RAM price forecast.

Why could the pressure last into 2027 and beyond?
TrendForce says PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as manufacturers shift additional capacity toward server applications. Separately, TechRadar reported on October 1, 2026, that Micron expects memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be much tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. The report quoted Micron as saying it had no line of sight to when supply and demand would return to balance, even with additional industry DRAM cleanroom space planned. TechRadar’s report on Micron’s outlook is a secondary account of the company’s statements.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
These outlooks indicate continued risk of tight supply; they do not establish a date when the market will rebalance. Nor do they prove that retail prices will rise every quarter. Contract prices, manufacturer selling prices, and the price of a particular kit are related but distinct measures, and consumer demand can change the outcome.

The market forecasts do not show that buying immediately will save money, or that waiting will make a kit cheaper. If you need an upgrade, base the decision on your device and your budget rather than treating a market forecast as a retail-price prediction.
