A padlock beside a PS5 game means the console cannot currently confirm that the signed-in user has valid access. It can indicate a license problem or a network-related check, but it does not by itself prove that you never bought the game. Your access may instead come from an active PlayStation Plus entitlement or from another account sharing its games on that PS5.
Identify which entitlement should unlock the title, verify that entitlement, and then repair the license or console connection. The checks below separate purchased games, PlayStation Plus games, and Console Sharing so you do not treat every lock as a missing purchase.
What the padlock icon actually means
PlayStation uses the padlock as a warning that the console cannot establish access to the game at that moment. The icon is associated with licensing, but PlayStation also lists network problems as a possible cause. A temporary service outage, an account mismatch, an expired subscription, a title leaving a catalogue, or a sharing setting can all produce a game that is visible but will not launch.
The icon does not answer the ownership question on its own. A game can appear in your library because you purchased it, because it was obtained through PlayStation Plus, or because another user enabled sharing on your PS5. Those are different entitlements with different checks and remedies.

Think of the padlock as an access-status warning, not an ownership verdict. The same symbol can appear for a genuinely owned game during a network or license-sync problem and for a title that was only available through a subscription or another user’s console-sharing setting.
How to tell whether you bought the game
1. Sign in to the account that made the purchase
On the PS5, switch to the PlayStation account you believe bought the game. If several people use the console, do not rely on the profile that normally plays the title. The purchasing account may be a different adult or child account, or an older account that is no longer the default login.
Check every plausible account before deciding that a purchase is missing. A family member may have bought the game, or you may be signed into a newer account after changing email addresses or creating a second profile. The console’s installed files do not identify which account owns the license.

Open the account’s transaction history and look for the game’s purchase. Confirm the title, edition and completion of the transaction. A failed, cancelled or reversed payment is not a current game license.
Use the transaction record as the decisive check for direct ownership. Record the exact title and edition shown there, especially if the console contains several versions. A completed transaction on one account does not transfer ownership to another account simply because both profiles use the same PS5.
A game shown in the library is not conclusive proof of a purchase. Library visibility can also come from a subscription entitlement or from another account’s sharing arrangement. The transaction record is the useful evidence for direct ownership.
3. Check edition and platform details
Make sure the transaction corresponds to the version installed. A PS4 edition, a PS5 upgrade entitlement and a special edition can have separate access rules. A padlock on one version does not establish that every version is owned by the same account.
Compare the locked tile with the edition named in the transaction history. If the account bought one version but the console is trying to launch another, resolve that edition mismatch before treating the problem as a missing purchase.

4. Test the purchasing account
With the purchasing account selected, highlight the game and try to start it. If it launches there but remains locked for another user, the purchase is likely valid and the issue is Console Sharing rather than ownership.
If it is locked for the apparent owner as well, continue with service-status, software, connection and license-restoration checks. A lock on the owner’s profile is not proof that the payment failed; it can mean the console is temporarily unable to validate a valid license.
Why a PlayStation Plus game can become locked
Confirm the membership is active
PlayStation Plus access belongs to the member account. Check that the subscription has not expired, been cancelled before the next billing date, or been replaced by a different account’s membership. If the game was claimed as a monthly benefit, the member must still have the required active Plus entitlement.

Do not use the presence of a download or an old library entry as evidence that the membership is still valid. The entitlement is tied to the member account and its current benefit, so check that account rather than the profile that usually plays the game.
Check catalogue availability
For a game obtained from a PlayStation Plus catalogue, verify that the title is still available in that catalogue. Catalogue games can leave the service. An active membership does not preserve access to a title that is no longer included.
This is a separate check from whether the subscription itself is active. You can have a current membership and still see a lock when the particular catalogue title has been removed.
Do not confuse Plus access with a purchase
Being able to download or see a Plus game does not necessarily mean you bought it permanently. Compare the account’s transaction history with its subscription status and the catalogue listing. If there is no purchase record and the title is no longer covered by Plus, the padlock is consistent with the end of that entitlement.
That distinction prevents an unnecessary second purchase. First establish whether the game was bought outright, claimed as a Plus benefit, or made available by another account’s membership and sharing settings.

When another account owns the game
How Console Sharing and Offline Play works
PlayStation allows the owner account to enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5 at a time. Other users of that enabled PS5 can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, including while offline. Selected PlayStation Plus benefits can also be shared on that console.
The setting does not turn the other user’s profile into the purchaser. It authorizes use on the designated PS5 while the owner’s account remains the source of the entitlement.
What the owner must check
Ask the purchasing or subscribing account holder to sign in on this PS5 and verify that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. If it is enabled on a different PS5, this console will not receive that account’s shared access. The owner may need to disable sharing on the other console before enabling it here.
Because the feature can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time, moving the owner’s sharing setting can change which console receives access. If the owner recently changed consoles, reset a system or altered account settings, check this setting before reinstalling the game.
Signs that sharing is the real issue
- The owner account can start the game, but your profile sees a padlock.
- The game was never purchased by your account, yet it worked previously on this console.
- The owner recently changed consoles, reset the PS5 or changed the sharing setting.
Do not describe a shared game as purchased by your account. The access is valid only through the owner’s entitlement and sharing configuration. If the owner disables sharing or designates another PS5, your profile can lose access without any change to the installed game files.
Restore licenses on PS5
Restoring licenses asks PlayStation to resynchronise your account’s game entitlements. PlayStation states that restoring licenses does not affect your data. It is appropriate after confirming the correct account, purchase or Plus entitlement, especially when the title should be available but remains locked.
Restore licenses while signed in to the account that should provide access. If another account owns the game, restoring licenses on your profile cannot manufacture that owner’s entitlement; have the owner verify sharing or restore licenses from the owner account instead.

- Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose the licenses to restore and follow the on-screen confirmation.
From the game tile
- Highlight the locked game on the home screen or in your library.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Restore License.
PlayStation Support describes this situation as: “A game has a padlock icon (not related to the expiration of your PlayStation Plus subscription).” That wording explains why restoration can help with a valid license; it does not remove the need to check Plus status when Plus is the source of access.

Follow this troubleshooting order after entitlement checks
Use the sequence below rather than repeatedly deleting the game or buying it again. Each step targets a different reason the console may be unable to validate access.
- Check PlayStation service status. If account or licensing services are down, a correctly owned game can appear locked until service is restored.
- Restart the PS5. A restart refreshes the local session and is a recommended first response to launch problems.
- Install current system software. In Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, install any available update, then restart if requested.
- Verify the internet connection. A connection problem can prevent the console from checking an entitlement. Reconnect the PS5 and retry after service status is normal.
- Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play when applicable. The owner account must enable it on this PS5 if your access is shared.
- Restore licenses. Use either of the paths above while signed in to the account whose entitlement should unlock the title.
- Use Safe Mode database rebuilding only as a later escalation. PlayStation’s game-launch guidance includes rebuilding the database for persistent launch problems. Follow the on-screen Safe Mode instructions and do not interrupt the process.
- Delete and re-download the game if required. PlayStation’s launch guidance includes this option for some problems. Confirm the entitlement first so you do not mistake a damaged installation for a missing license.
Work through the list in order and retest after each meaningful change. If service status is normal, the software is current and the entitlement is valid, restoring licenses is the focused repair before more disruptive steps. No single step fixes every padlock.
If the purchase, Plus membership or sharing arrangement is invalid, technical troubleshooting cannot create an entitlement. Conversely, if the entitlement checks out, avoid repurchasing until the service, account, sharing and license checks are complete.

Separate checks for disc games
A physical-disc game follows a different launch path from a digital purchase. Insert the correct disc and use PlayStation’s disc-specific troubleshooting if the PS5 cannot read or start it. A disc license check should not be replaced with account-transaction checks for a digital copy.
For some launch issues, PlayStation’s guidance covers moving game data from USB extended storage to the PS5’s console storage. That is a storage and launch remedy, not proof of digital ownership. Buying a disc, a replacement accessory or a disc-cleaning product does not unlock a digital copy tied to another account.
Keep the physical and digital diagnoses separate: confirm the disc is present for the disc edition, while a digital edition requires the correct account entitlement. Installing the same game from one source does not automatically grant the other source’s license.

If the padlock covers the entire game image rather than appearing only when you try to launch it, include family settings in your diagnosis. PlayStation says the Family Manager can amend this type of restriction. Ask the Family Manager to review the relevant parental-control setting separately from the license checks above.

What not to conclude from a padlock
- Do not conclude that you never bought the game solely because the icon appears.
- Do not conclude that every lock means PlayStation Plus expired.
- Do not treat library visibility as proof of a completed purchase.
- Do not assume another user’s purchase belongs to your account.
- Do not buy the game again until transaction history, Plus status and sharing have been checked.
- Do not delete saved data as a first response; license restoration is designed not to affect data.
- Do not assume reinstalling changes who owns the game; installation and entitlement are separate.
A practical decision path
- Ask, “Which account should provide access?” Is it my purchase, my Plus membership, or another user’s shared entitlement?
- For a purchase, find the completed transaction on that account.
- For Plus, confirm the membership and catalogue availability.
- For sharing, have the owner enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5.
- Once the entitlement is valid, check service status, restart, update system software and restore licenses.
- Escalate to Safe Mode database rebuilding or a re-download only if the entitlement remains valid and the ordinary steps fail.
This sequence tells you whether the problem is ownership, subscription availability, sharing or a temporary license-validation failure before you make a purchase or remove an installation.
