A PS5 game can occupy more storage after an update or content-pack installation because the installed data has changed. That change is title-specific: Sony documents that games may offer selectable add-ons and removable portions, but its general support material does not identify one universal patching mechanism or promise that every update will increase (or preserve) the installed size.
The download figure and the additional space shown in Storage are also different measurements. A patch can replace, reorganize, or add game data, and Sony publishes no general conversion from download megabytes to the final installed footprint. Use the console’s storage screens and the game’s own content controls to determine what changed, then choose an expansion method that fits how you play.
What actually changes when a PS5 game is updated
An update changes the collection of files the installed game uses. The change may be a new build of existing data, additional content, or both. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says update and patch data is managed more effectively on PS5 than on PS4, so downloading and applying updates should generally be quicker; it does not say that an update always adds its download size to the installed game.
Content-pack installs are more straightforward: an add-on, mode, or other optional package is additional game data. On supported titles, Sony lets you select add-ons during some disc installations and later manage installed content. A game can therefore become larger because you deliberately installed something that was not part of the base package.

Developers decide how a title divides its data. One game may expose separate modes or other portions that can be removed; another may provide no granular controls. The fact that one title offers a removable campaign or add-on does not establish the same behavior for another title.
Why the download size is not the same as the storage increase
The number shown while a patch downloads describes data transferred from the PlayStation Store or an update server. The number in Settings > Storage describes data occupying the console after installation. They answer different questions, and Sony’s published support pages do not provide a universal formula connecting them.
- A download can contain changes to existing game data rather than a wholly separate copy of the game.
- An update can add optional or required content that remains after the installation completes.
- The console may reorganize installed data as part of applying an update.
- The displayed game total can change for reasons specific to the title’s packaging and content rules.
These are ways to understand why the two measurements can differ, not a claim that every PS5 update uses a particular file-replacement or temporary-copy process. Sony has not documented a universal requirement that every patch duplicates the entire game, nor has it published a fixed temporary-space multiplier. If a publisher explains the mechanism for a specific game, that title-specific explanation takes precedence.

Check the numbers before deleting anything
Start with the console’s own figures. Record available space before you remove content, and compare it with the requirement shown for the download or add-on.
- Open Settings > Storage and note the available console storage. This is the space immediately available for an update or installation.
- For a game you plan to download, open Game Library, highlight the game, select the … menu, and choose View Product. Check the minimum free-space requirement shown for the download.
- For an add-on marked Waiting to install, check Settings > Storage and the add-on’s PlayStation Store listing. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says the Store listing can show the add-on’s minimum storage requirement.
- After installation, return to Storage and record the game’s displayed size. Compare the before-and-after values rather than treating the download progress number as the amount added.
Requirements are minimums, not a promise that the final installed total will equal that number. Keep additional headroom for other downloads and system activity, especially when the console reports that an update cannot start despite apparently sufficient space.
Use the game’s content controls to recover space
Manage Game Content
Highlight the game on the home screen or in Game Library and look for Manage Game Content. Where the title supports it, this screen lets you install selected add-ons instead of every available package. On disc-based games, Sony’s installation guidance may ask which add-ons to install; choosing only what you need avoids storing unused packages.

Customize removable portions
Some supported games provide Customize controls that let you remove a mode, an add-on, or a finished portion while retaining the rest of the installation. Sony gives unused add-ons and completed portions as examples of content that may be removable. The exact labels and choices vary by title, and removing a portion can make that mode unavailable until you download it again.

There is no platform-wide list of removable files. If Manage Game Content or Customize is absent, the developer may have packaged the game as one inseparable installation. Do not delete random folders or saved data to force a smaller number. Sony treats saved data separately from game and app data, and deleting saves is not a routine remedy for an oversized installation.
Storage options when the library no longer fits

An expansion device changes available capacity; it does not prevent a particular game from changing size after a future update. Choose USB storage when archiving games is acceptable and you are willing to move them before play. Choose an M.2 SSD when you want PS5 titles to remain playable without that move-back step.

M.2 SSD requirements documented for the CFI-2016 model
Sony’s CFI-2016 PS5 Safety Guide specifies the following requirements for an internal M.2 NVMe expansion drive. They are model-specific: check the current guide for your exact PS5 model before buying or installing anything.

The guide also requires suitable heat dissipation and warns that Sony cannot guarantee every drive meeting the listed specifications. A heatsink or other thermal component counts toward the thickness limit. These figures should not be generalized to a different PS5 revision without checking its documentation.
When a larger number is normal and when it deserves troubleshooting
Likely normal change
A modest increase after installing a listed add-on, mode, or other optional package is expected. A change after a substantial game update can also be legitimate, but the official platform guidance does not provide a standard amount by which it should grow. Confirm that the update completed and that the Store or in-game content list shows what was installed.

Check for an incomplete add-on
If an add-on says Waiting to install, verify both the available space and the add-on’s minimum requirement. Confirm that you are using the account and disc region associated with the game when relevant; Sony’s add-on troubleshooting guidance treats storage, network, and disc/account region as separate checks.
Installation fails or the reported size looks implausible
- Recheck Settings > Storage and the game’s or add-on’s stated minimum free-space requirement.
- Use Manage Game Content or Customize if the title offers them, rather than deleting saved data.
- Retry after the console has completed any queued download or installation activity.
- Consult Sony’s current game-download and add-on troubleshooting pages for the exact error message and your PS5 model.
- Check the game’s publisher support for title-specific information. A publisher may explain why its package changed size when Sony’s general documentation does not.
Do not assume that an unusually large patch proves corruption, duplicate files, or a fixed temporary-copy requirement. Those explanations are not established as universal by the cited Sony material. Escalate when the increase is accompanied by an error, repeated installation failure, missing content, or a requirement that remains unmet after you have freed the stated space.
A practical decision checklist
- Need to know what changed? Compare the game’s Storage total before and after installation, then review Manage Game Content.
- Need to install an update? Check available space and the minimum requirement shown through View Product or the Store listing.
- Do not use a mode or add-on? Remove it only through the title’s Customize or Manage Game Content controls.
- Want to keep a large library offline? Use USB extended storage, accepting that PS5 games must be moved back before play.
- Want extra playable PS5 capacity? Install an M.2 SSD that matches the requirements for your exact console model.
- Seeing an error or an inexplicable requirement? Follow current Sony troubleshooting and the game’s publisher guidance instead of deleting saves or guessing at the cause.
The reliable conclusion is narrow but useful: updates and content installs can change a game’s installed footprint, yet no single patch-size rule explains every title. Measure the console’s available and required space, remove only content the game explicitly allows you to remove, and select storage expansion based on whether you need archival capacity or immediately playable PS5 space.
