Most original PS2 and PS3 discs will not run on a newer PlayStation simply because the console can read a disc. Sony designed PS5 backward compatibility primarily around PS4 games and explicitly states that PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. Original PS2 and PS3 games may instead be available as a separate downloadable remaster, remake, or cloud-streaming title, depending on the exact game, membership plan, and country.
The answer also depends on which older console you mean. Some early PS3 models had limited PlayStation 2 compatibility, but Sony warned that full compatibility was not guaranteed. There has never been a universal rule that every PlayStation plays every earlier generation.
The short answer: compatibility is generation- and game-specific
PlayStation backward compatibility is not determined only by the optical drive. It depends on the console’s hardware architecture, system software, emulation support, licensing, and whether Sony has approved that particular title.
Sony’s current PS5 support information says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, but it also states plainly: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” That PS4-to-PS5 support should not be generalized to PS2 or PS3 software.

| What you have | What a PS5 generally supports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS3 disc | Not supported | Sony explicitly excludes PS3 discs; inserting the disc or changing a setting cannot make it playable. |
| Original PS2 disc | No general native-disc pathway | PS5 compatibility is not an automatic extension to PS2 discs. Look for an officially listed classic, remake, or remaster. |
| Original PS4 disc | Supported on a PS5 with a disc drive | The game must be one of the supported PS4 titles. A PS4 disc cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. |
| Digital PS2 or PS3 classic | Possible through a catalog listing | The exact title, region, membership tier, and delivery method determine eligibility. |
| Remake or remaster of a PS2/PS3 game | Possible as a PS4 or PS5 release | This is a new or modified release, not playback of the original disc. |
Why an old disc is not automatically compatible
The disc is only the storage medium
A PS2 or PS3 disc contains software compiled for a different console. The newer system must be able to interpret that software and reproduce the older machine’s behavior. A drive may identify the disc, yet the operating system can still reject it because the game format is unsupported.
Reading a disc and running the code on it are separate functions. The same principle explains why a PS5 disc edition can accept a supported PS4 disc while refusing a PS3 disc: the physical media fits, but the console’s software support does not.
Each generation used different hardware and system software
Older PlayStations were built around different processors, graphics systems, memory arrangements, and operating-system assumptions. To run an earlier game without its original hardware, a newer console needs an emulator or a specially rebuilt version. Emulation is not a universal switch: timing, graphics behavior, audio, peripherals, save systems, and copy-protection routines can all affect whether a title works correctly.
Console makers therefore validate compatibility at the platform and title level. A game that appears simple may still depend on hardware behavior that an emulator does not reproduce accurately. If a title has not been tested and approved, the manufacturer cannot promise that it will boot, save correctly, display properly, or remain stable.
Licensing and distribution also matter
Even when a game could technically be emulated, its publisher may not have granted permission for a new digital release or streaming version. Music, character, sports, and other third-party rights can expire or differ by country. That is why one classic may appear in a catalog while another from the same console generation does not.
What PS5 backward compatibility actually covers
PS4 support is the main backward-compatibility program
Sony describes PS5 as compatible with the overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PS4 games. On a PS5 with a disc drive, you normally install a supported PS4 disc and keep the disc inserted whenever you play. Digital PS4 purchases can be downloaded from the account that owns them.
This support does not mean that PS5 runs the original PS4 software in every case without qualification. Some games can have launch, feature, or accessory limitations, so the individual game’s listing remains the authority. More importantly for this question, PS4 support says nothing about original PS2 or PS3 discs.
PS3 discs are explicitly excluded
When you insert an original PS3 disc into a PS5, the console cannot turn it into a supported PS4 or PS5 license. There is no system setting, firmware option, or disc-drive accessory that changes that result. The practical choices are to use a compatible older console, find an official remaster or remake, or check whether the game is offered through the current Classics Catalog.

PS2 discs do not gain support by being older
PS2 games are an even earlier format. PS5 does not provide a general promise that original PS2 discs will run. A game may be available as a separately published PS4 or PS5 version, but that release is not the same as inserting the PS2 disc. Check the exact game’s current listing rather than assuming that a popular PS2 title is included.
Why some PS3 consoles could play PS2 games
Historically, certain PS3 revisions included hardware or software support for PlayStation 2 format games. Sony’s PS3 documentation for the system it covered describes limited backward compatibility and cautions that full compatibility is not guaranteed:
“Many PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format software titles operate, but full compatibility is not guaranteed.”

That statement must be tied to the specific PS3 model described by the manual. It does not mean that every PS3 revision plays PS2 discs, and it does not mean that every PS2 title works on a compatible-looking model. Later hardware revisions changed components and removed or altered some compatibility features.
If you are buying or borrowing a PS3 for an original PS2 game, identify the exact model number, then verify that model against the individual game’s compatibility information. Do not rely on the console’s color, storage capacity, or a seller’s generic description. A PS3 that plays original PS3 discs may still lack the features needed for a particular PS2 title.
Three legitimate ways to play a PS2 or PS3 game on a newer console
1. Use an official remaster or remake
A remaster generally updates presentation, performance, controls, or resolution while retaining much of the original game’s design. A remake may rebuild the game more extensively. Sony’s PlayStation Plus service documentation distinguishes these downloadable PS4 and PS5 versions from original PS2 and PS3 games delivered through streaming.
Because a remaster or remake is a separate product, you need to check its platform, edition, region, save compatibility, and included downloadable content. Owning the old disc does not automatically grant a license to the newer release unless the publisher explicitly provides an upgrade path.
2. Stream an original classic through the Classics Catalog
Sony has offered selected original PS2 and PS3 games through streaming in supported markets. On the current United States support page, eligible Classics Catalog games can be accessed on PS4 or PS5 with the required PlayStation Plus plan. Catalog membership and game availability vary by country and can change over time.

Streaming is access to a server-delivered version of the game, not a way to make your physical disc run. It also depends on your network. Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps broadband for Classics Catalog streaming. For 1080p streaming, Sony specifies at least 15 Mbps and a title that supports that resolution. Those are minimum connection requirements, not a guarantee of perfect latency or image quality; household congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and distance to the service can still affect play.
3. Use the appropriate older hardware
For an original PS3 disc, a functioning PS3 is the direct physical-media route. For an original PS2 disc, an original PS2 or a PS3 model with confirmed support may be appropriate. The PS3 route requires more checking because compatibility differs by revision and game.
| Route | What it preserves | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Original disc on older console | Your existing physical copy and, where supported, its original behavior | Console model, region, disc condition, controller and memory-card requirements |
| Downloadable remaster or remake | A supported modern-console release | Exact platform, edition, upgrade policy, add-ons, and save-transfer rules |
| Classics Catalog streaming | Access to a selected catalog title without the original disc | Country, current catalog listing, membership tier, broadband speed, and title resolution support |
How to check your specific game before spending money
- Write down the exact title. Include the region and edition where relevant. “The game” is not precise enough when there are original, greatest-hits, remastered, and regional releases.
- Identify the format. Decide whether you own a PS2 disc, PS3 disc, digital purchase, or no copy at all. A physical license and a digital catalog listing are different access methods.
- Identify the console model. Record whether the newer console is a PS5 disc edition or PS5 Digital Edition. If considering a PS3 for PS2 software, record its model number rather than just calling it a PS3.
- Check the current official game listing. Look for the title in the PlayStation Store or Classics Catalog for your country. Confirm whether the listing says downloadable, streamable, PS4, or PS5; those labels tell you how the game is delivered.
- Confirm the membership requirement. Streaming and catalog downloads may require a particular PlayStation Plus plan. Do not assume that a lower tier or a trial includes the same titles.
- Check practical requirements. For streaming, compare your connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps 1080p requirement where applicable. For discs, confirm that the console has the required drive and that the disc is readable.
- Choose the route that matches your priority. Select original hardware for physical-disc fidelity, a remaster or remake for a modern installed version, or streaming when the title is listed and your connection is suitable.
Common situations and the correct response
“My PS5 accepts the PS3 disc but does nothing.”
That is expected for an unsupported PS3 disc. The drive recognizing or spinning the media does not create compatibility. Check for an official modern release or use a PS3.
“I have a PS5 Digital Edition. Can I use my PS4, PS2, or PS3 discs?”
No physical disc can be inserted into a PS5 Digital Edition. For supported games, you need a digital license. For PS2 and PS3 titles, that means finding an eligible downloadable release or streaming listing, not converting the disc into a digital copy.
“A friend says their PS3 plays PS2 games. Why does mine not?”
PS3 revisions are not interchangeable for backward compatibility. Compare model numbers and then check the specific PS2 game. Sony’s own documentation warns that many titles operate but full compatibility is not guaranteed.
“The game is in a video showing PS5 gameplay. Does that mean my disc works?”
Not necessarily. The video may show a remaster, remake, or streamed catalog version. Verify the product name and delivery method in the current official listing. A modern release can look identical to the original while using a different license and codebase.
“The classic is listed, but streaming is poor.”
First test a wired connection or a less congested network, then confirm that your measured broadband exceeds the stated minimum. If the title has a downloadable remaster or remake, that avoids streaming latency. Availability and delivery options remain title- and region-specific.

- A PS5 that plays PS4 discs will also play PS3 or PS2 discs.
- Every PS3 model can run every PS2 game.
- A Classics Catalog stream is playback of your original physical disc.
- Buying a remaster automatically transfers ownership of the old disc.
- A title available in one country or membership tier is available in every country or tier.
- A console’s disc drive, by itself, determines backward compatibility.
The practical decision
Start with the exact game and format, not with a general claim about a console generation. If it is an original PS3 disc, plan on using a PS3 because PS5 does not support that disc format. If it is an original PS2 disc, verify the exact PS3 model or use original PS2 hardware; do not assume a generic PS3 will work. If you are willing to change formats, check for a current remaster, remake, or Classics Catalog listing and confirm the required plan and network conditions.
That approach avoids the most common mistake: treating a modern digital or streamed edition as proof that the original disc is compatible. The title, console model, region, and delivery method must all match.
