A powerline Ethernet kit can struggle in a new house even when no appliance is causing interference: the electrical route between the two outlets may simply be a poor path for its signal. Nearby outlets are the first useful test. If the adapters work there but fail in the target room, you have isolated the problem to that route or outlet environment—not proved the wiring is faulty, and not proved a newer kit will fix it.

Why the house can matter more than the appliances

Powerline adapters carry network data over household electrical wiring. The connection therefore depends on the path between the outlets, as well as electrical noise and the adapters themselves. A newer house is no guarantee that two particular outlets will communicate well; the available sources do not establish a failure rate or measured comparison for newer versus older homes.

Outlets on different circuits, a long wiring route, a phase crossing, or filtering in the electrical path can weaken or prevent communication. Breakers and some outlet arrangements may also affect the signal. These possibilities are reasons to test systematically, not a diagnosis of any specific home’s wiring.

Appliances can contribute noise, but they are only one possible cause. TP-Link and NETGEAR describe performance as dependent on the electrical environment, and Tapo’s support guidance recommends switching nearby appliances off one at a time to isolate a possible effect. That is vendor troubleshooting advice, not evidence that a particular appliance—or appliances generally—cause most failures.

  • 𝐀𝐕𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟕𝟓𝟎 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐭 - Powered by HomePlug AV2, delivers AV1000 powerline speeds through existing electrical wiring. Speeds cannot exceed your internet plan's limit and may be lower due to wiring quality, distance, and interference.
  • Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
  • 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐲 - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
  • 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.

Run a controlled test before changing anything

1. Check the basic connection

  • Check the powerline link indicators on both adapters and confirm the units are paired according to their own manual.
  • Check that each Ethernet cable is seated and that the router-side adapter is connected to a working router or modem connection.
  • Test the internet connection by connecting the same wired device directly to the router or modem. This helps separate an internet or router problem from a powerline-link problem.

2. Test the adapters in nearby wall outlets

Temporarily plug both adapters directly into nearby wall outlets, ideally in the same room, then check whether the powerline link establishes. NETGEAR recommends a same-room isolation test, and TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance also uses a nearby connection check.

If they do not link nearby, check that the adapters use compatible standards, pair or reset them as their manuals specify, and test the units and Ethernet cables. A link failure in this setup points away from the distant room as the only explanation, but does not by itself identify which component is at fault.

  • HOMEPLUG AV2 - Delivers AV2000 powerline speeds over existing electrical wiring, extending home network wired connectivity by up to 750ft through thick walls and other barriers. Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
  • CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
  • ADVISORY - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.
  • 2 GIGABIT PORTS - Provides a secure wired network for connected devices, such as desktops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more. Ethernet cables are included. Tip: Expand connections with an Ethernet switch (sold separately).

3. Move one adapter to the target room

Leave the router-side adapter in place and move the other to the intended room. Plug it directly into a wall outlet, then check the link indicator and test the same wired device under the same conditions used in the nearby test.

If the nearby test worked but the target-room test does not, try another wall outlet in the target room or elsewhere on the same electrical wiring system. A changed result can help identify an outlet or route that works better. A failure at the target location is an isolation result, not proof of a particular circuit, phase, or wiring defect.

  • 𝐆𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 - provides secure wired networks for desktops, smart TVs or games consoles. Ethernet cables are included.

4. Remove filtering and test for appliance noise

Do not place a powerline adapter between the wall and a power strip, extension cord, surge protector, or UPS. These accessories can filter the signal; TP-Link and NETGEAR advise plugging adapters directly into wall outlets. If the adapter has a pass-through socket, follow its manual rather than adding an unapproved intermediary.

Keep adapters away from high-power appliances such as washers, refrigerators, and air conditioners. If interference remains plausible, switch nearby appliances off one at a time and see whether the link or performance changes. Avoid switching off essential equipment, and do not assume an appliance is responsible unless the test produces a repeatable change.

5. Keep the comparison fair

Use the same wired device, cables, and test conditions at each outlet. Check whether the powerline link is stable before comparing throughput. A kit’s advertised figure is not a measurement of internet speed in your home: TP-Link describes 600 Mbps, 1200 Mbps, and 2000 Mbps as theoretical maximum powerline rates in its FAQ, not measured household throughput.

Check that the adapters can work together

Powerline products use different standards. In its 2022 PG2400P manual, TP-Link says its G.hn devices are not compatible with HomePlug AV or AV2 devices. Check the exact standard for both adapters rather than relying on brand name, product age, or the appearance of their plugs. The units also need to be on a compatible wiring path; a nearby test can help separate a basic pairing or compatibility issue from a problem at the intended outlets.

What to conclude from the results

  • No link in nearby outlets: Recheck standard compatibility, pairing, LEDs, Ethernet connections, and the adapters themselves. Do not treat the target-room wiring as the only suspect.
  • Link nearby, no link at the target outlet: The route or outlet environment is the stronger lead. Test another outlet and remove any filtering accessory.
  • Link at both locations, but worse performance in the target room: Compare under identical conditions, then investigate outlet placement and possible nearby noise sources one at a time.
  • Results vary with appliance state or outlet: Repeat the comparison before drawing a conclusion. A change can identify a useful workaround without establishing the exact electrical cause.

If the tests point to circuit or phase layout, do not open an electrical panel or alter wiring as a DIY fix. The adapter tests cannot establish the home’s electrical layout; an electrician can assess it safely.

When replacing an adapter makes sense

Consider a compatible replacement only if testing identifies a missing, faulty, or incompatible adapter. Before choosing a kit, check its powerline standard, Ethernet ports for the router and remote device, whether its outlet design suits your setup, and its return terms. A replacement cannot be assumed to overcome a poor electrical path, and no particular model is established as a fix for this house. A two-adapter setup also requires Ethernet cables at the router and the remote device.
